HUH I WONDER WHY THAT IS

:)

Huehuehuhuhu

I actually do remember one fart joke, but that's about it. And a pretty blatant Pizza Hut product placement, but hey, whatcha gonna do?

Going by some impressions you'd think that Michael Bay neither wrote or directed this movie. So obviously they're lying.

Shit I've been caught, CHEESE IT *flees into the sewers*

But seriously, I have no problem recommending this movie, and I saw the first one for the first time in a long while a couple weeks ago. It's just fun. Both movies can coexist separately. They're way similar in terms of some story, but go about it in different ways.

Man I even just saw a favorable Twitter impression from someone who thinks that Michael Bay directed it. I have a question, does it say who the director is at the beginning or end?

I mean they're completely different things so I'm not even sure why people would bother comparing them. Maybe in terms of quality sure, but not in terms of... oh this new movie shouldn't exist because that one does, ala Raimi's Spider-man and Amazing Spider-man.

It is literally all over the place that Jonathan Liebesman directed it. It shows 'directed by Jonathan Liebesman' and 'a Jonathan Liebesman film' in the end credits too.

...

jonathan liebesman

wait no that can't be...bu-bu-but everybody told me this was Bayturtles!!??

Yeah, everybody, you can put that to bed right now. His name does show up in the credits as produced it, but I see nothing showing his stamp on the movie beyond maybe some input on the action sequences. And you want his input on that.

So there's literally no excuse. Gotcha. Then again some people legitimately do not ever pay attention to the credits. My girlfriend is ever oblivious to the names attached to movies. We'll watch something and I'll start rattling off impressions and bringing up say the director's name and she'll just be like, oh is that who directed it?

So glad these impressions are positive. I feel like there's going to be a decent amount of crow served soon.

Nah. These guys are cool and definitely have valid opinions, but let me just throw this out there: before Amazing Spider-man 2 released wide, someone who saw it early made a thread called "Amazing Spider-man 2 is in the upper echelon of superhero movies" here on GAF.

There's a whole battalion ready at the helm for next week, just you wait. Early impressions are sometimes a lot more positive than the general consensus, and many people won't be able to look past Bay's name being attached regardless of his role.

Coming back to this one:
While I would consider Raimi/ASM to be somewhat similar, this is an entirely different deal. They're really nothing alike. I loved the first one because it's a damn Golden Harvest movie, Elias Koteas, goofy 80's shit, etc. I like this one because of the crazy action, well done turtle characterization, and some good attempts to modify the source material for 2014.

Real talk, I thought this movie was going to be total shit but I went because A: it was early B: I was getting free shit and C: I was going with my friends. I am literally chomping on crow right now. That being said, there are of course flaws with the movie (which I can go into detail with if you prefer: It's fairly spoilery), but I think it'll surprise some people.

Though I liked Thor 2 and loved Boyhood, so I must be fucking crazy!

Edit to answer this:

How long was the movie? 90 minutes? 2 hours?

An hour 40. Call it 90 if you chop off credits and such. It doesn't overstay its' welcome (looking fucking directly at you, Transformers)

Yeah. For me they were wildly different as I don't really consider a handful of the same story beats to make them similar. The tone, direction, and general story were radically different so I can't really compare them.

With these movies, though... they're about as unrelated as you can get. If people think they're too similar because both have ninja turtles then I dunno.

People still believe Burton directed nightmare before Christmas no?

Hell, I did up to a certain point (don't worry, that was a long time ago). Don't judge me. Plus I'd only seen it once and never really looked into it as it's not my cup of tea.

Oh, can't believe I forgot to ask, but how is Brian Tyler's score? He's one of my favorite new composers and I was giddy to learn he was doing this.

Considering the way this was being hailed as the ultimate reaper of childhoods by so many people here, all it has to be is decent. And make money.

hahaha I just remember a lot of people getting pissed that Burton was taking credit for it.

It's good. Nothing particularly stood out too much to me, but they have some fun bits with it, especially during sewer traversal.

I may not be the best barometer for scores though; I really like the Transformers scores, in particular how Bay uses the main theme song as a jumping off point for a lot of it.

You know, that's completely understandable. I cannot fucking stand it when the actual directors are swept under the rug because their name isn't as big as another name on the project. del Toro comes to mind.

From GUILLERMO DEL TORO...

GUILLERMO DEL TORO INVITES YOU...

Fair enough. The Transformers films have amazing soundtracks; easily the best aspect of them. For me though I like to listen through the score for a movie a time or two to get familiar with it, and it almost always works. I find that with most movie soundtracks, even if they're absolutely fantastic, if you haven't listened to them prior to seeing the movie, you're not familiar with it and on top of that you're paying attention to the story or whatever else, and it can cause that first time viewing/listening experience to not stand out so much.

I know I've seen movies with terrific scores but never really noticed it during the movie. It would be only until after once I listened to the score as standalone, and then rewatched the movie with it in mind. And in my experience familiarizing yourself with a soundtrack can even lead to some tracks sticking out in a positive way during the movie, as you'll find yourself noticing it, knowing how it plays out and combining that with what's going on.

Like with the Guardians of the Galaxy soundtrack, a few tracks I've had on repeat over the last day or so, well, I know when they play in the movie it might enhance my liking of a particular scene.

Score talk

Oh, you're absolutely right. I'm pretty sure if I'll listen to the TMNT score closer to release to see how it fares, but nothing ever jumped out as actively bad. It definitely all fit well with the movie's beats, especially in terms of humor.

That being said, I can't really listen to scores before release, since the track names tend to be spoilery :-/

Brian Tyler is an amazing composer, so I would expect it to be at least really good. He recently did Iron Man 3 and Thor: The Dark World, both of which had terrific soundtracks. In the past he did the latest Rambo, Aliens vs. Predator Requiem, Bubba Ho-tep (awesome score), etc. I'm very eager to hear this.

His score was disposable. Not bad, but just run of the mill composition. Klaus Badelt's TMNT score was more impressive.

All I can say is that I hope I disagree. Which sometimes happens around these parts. :p

I don't think you will. You mentioned several films which I would use as launching points to suggest his work is decent, but I'm just guessing the guy does prompt work for a healthy portion of films in late production.

So Bronson, sanj.

Does Karai actually get some star time in this?

Yeah, she has a healthy role. Not much dialog.

In fact, I would say it's possible there are less than ten talking heads in this film that aren't the turtles or Splinter.

That would be shame if true. I guess I'll just have to wait and see.

Do you remember it having a theme? Surely to god it at least has a theme.

I don't. If anything, there is a chance I could have heard more score than most will.

While likely it's the final cut, it was devoid of the rap song that has been going around. It's always possible they could toss that in for the end credits sequence.

I did not notice any main theme beyond the one playing during sewer traversal, and maybe during their intro.

Like Sanj said, beyond the Turtles and Splinter, there really aren't a lot of people getting dialogue. April/Arnett/Fitchner/Shredder, with a couple others.

I took more foam fingers than intended apparently. Have two now.

Movie was a lot of fun. The action sequences were some of the best this summer.

The interaction/chemistry with the turtles was what I desired the most, and this film delivered especially in that category.

Did the Turtles have the majority of screen time, or did they spend it on human characters?

I'm pretty sure he was last working on it within the past two weeks going by his twitter.

...yeah that would explain it. Really lame. Probably not his fault, but it sounds like the soundtrack was a much lesser priority for this. Sure the soundtracks are among the last elements that are completed, but without the ample care given they never turn out exemplary.

I would say they split time, but again the human characters aren't really much. Megan Fox's acting ability is just so vapid it feels weird when they go back to them.

The turtles are pretty much the price of admission, and unlike the Transformers film (if I have to make the comparison) you learn to care about them as characters.

well isn't that some shit.

Hahaha looks like the skeptics are eating dem crows

I wouldn't say that. The film's plot has a ton of problems.

Again, I would be wary who I recommend this film to. Obviously if you are high art or consider Zack Snyder your one true God, you may have some issues with this film. It's not a very serious one.

I had a feeling for a long time now that it was going to be more cartoonish than serious.

I don't think that'd be a necessarily bad thing.

I will say this, it's going to be a bit heartbreaking when Hercules ends up with a ripe tomato and this one doesn't. Both are flawed films, but unlike Hercules this actually has action in it.

My guess is it'll end up 45-60%.

And now I'll definitely see it.

Eh, I'd wait for other reviews before going whole hog on mine.

Which is crazy considering the CGI work.

There is a FUCKTON of CGI in this. It's crazy.

If they split time, I'd say it leans towards the Turtles pretty heavily. There are rarely human scenes where they're not there. How many are we talking, like 5?

That is true. The plot is standard as all hell. I could compare it to another movie and show it's basically the same beat for beat, but that would cause problems.

And hey, I love Boyhood and I liked it! :p

Friend really wants to see this film, but I don't think I could stomach it. I'd wait for reviews, but that will probably just embolden my choice.
