Like I said in the other thread, I like the 4 hour option. There are some games that I would only rent for four hours.

yeah there's definitely some valid use cases for it. It's just odd to see people freak out about it like there aren't other options

Is this a fucking joke? 2.99$ for 4 hours? what should I do in 4 hours sony you stupid retard?

If you have a PS3 the game is only $10 at gamestop and you can keep it forever

If you think about it, an RPG for a month at $20 is a really good price compared to $60 to buy. Under the right circumstances, it works. It really depends on the gamer and what their schedule is. For me it would take months to finish a typical RPG so for me it makes more sense to buy.

For a AAA fresh title ok, but it doesn't seem like that's the case :/

Use your words please....

How long till I'm not a Junior, I dislike being tarred with the same brush...

Pricing seems fair IMO, the 90 day option seem awesome. Would also be cool if that then gives you a discount if you were to buy the game afterwards....

Precisely. Regardless of whether they're streaming to a PS4 or not, the games should not cost more to rent for a limited time than they are to buy permanently on their respective consoles period.

the convenience of not needing the hardware is worth it to some people

you have to factor that cost into this. being able to play these games without needing the hardware has at least some value

Indeed. I think the 4hr option is just silly. That should be like $1 and $2/3 should be a 24hr rental. Interested to see the subscription for this. There are some games I'd like to replay or play for the first time.

Laughable renting options aside

I watched a bunch a vids and will maybe try it out for myself tonight (I still have a PS3 though)

but...
Who is this service for that would make their investment in Gakkai worthwhile? It seems that such a niche clientele would be interested in this.

the issue with the concept of buying these games is:
you still don't own hardware to play the game on. even if you own a license to the game, sony is still providing the server(ps3 hardware in a serverfarm, basically) to run the game and also the streaming hardware to deliver the video to you

so i don't see how they could even run the service without still charging you something to play the game you "own"
and people would flip out if they had to subscribe to the service and ALSO pay a fee to own the game

i really don't see how this can be a viable business for them. they need to charge money to run all the servers and people don't want to pay that much for the content.

Again, OnLive already do this. You pay a subscription fee to cover streaming costs, but you can buy Steam games and play them indefinitely. My guess is that the current pricing ties into recent comments from Sony about leveraging PSN for alternate income opportunities; for example, getting Bravias into 4-5 star hotels and offering guests the ability to play games using PS Now. The pricing is similar to what you pay to rent a movie in those places.

Yea this. I doubt Sony had any high hopes of PS Now's success in people's homes.

yeah and how well did onlive do?

I'd say the 4hr option has that price because sony wants to discourage people from playing, let's say a 8 hour single player game, by paying for the 4hr option 2 times if that options costs, I don't know, a buck?, thus making the 7 days option more appealing.

In other words, try the game for $3, play the full game for $6

This service is crap. I'd much rather use Net ....

I would much rather sign up with ...

.....

oh wait you can't do this elsewhere nm. OnLive is the only other service that allows digital rentals yeah?

I will likely use the 7 day program a ton. Not many games I can't complete in a week or atleast play the most of.

And these are older games, so if I have an itch for say ... God of War 3. Bam, spend 3 bucks and play awhile.

I might want to just jump on and play Battlefield for a few hours with a friend, or play a hockey or football game, or maybe just download a game I already know I like to kill a few hours. There are plenty of uses I can think of for a four hour rental option. People take this shit personally:

I'm baffled Sony has the cajones to criticize EA's subscription service, while throwing this concept to the winds, poorly.

This is a beta.

I'll wait for a subscription plan and decide from there

Me too.

With the way my life is ill end up paying 30 bucks for 90days or w/e and on the 89th day ill have time to play it and my rental run out smh

I rather have subscription like with PS+ so i can at least know its there and if I play I can play not be all rushing to play a game before the timer ends up.

I wonder is it actual time with the game or does the timer start when you download the game?

ugh
you're comparing apples to oranges though
they're completely different things

I suppose, but they're still both fruit. You're paying for what is essentially an online game rental service, only one has a shorter time span and weirder pricing model.

I'm also not defending EA in any way, I'm just putting this out as a pot/kettle/black kind of situation for Sony.

Can't believe people are whining about $5.99 for 7 days.

That is cheaper then Blockbuster was for physical rentals back in the day.

I will be using the 4 hour and the 7 day rentals all the time.

And then a month for $7.99?? Really? People are complaining about that? WTF

The timer starts when you start the game...and you have to start it within 30 days of renting

So if you rent for 30 days then wait a week to start it then the 30 days starts that day you finally started the game you rented

for some reason a lot of people just get hung up on that 4 hour option or the prices of the physical versions of old games

What a meaningless statement. How long? What price?

The market picks the prices that are fair, not internet forum warriors. If no one uses the service, the prices will drop. If people use it, they will not.

Sony needs to throw ads into this and lower prices. Like there's a 10-20 second delay between turning on a game and actually getting to it. Its not like the user can do anything else anyway, so they should throw in an ad there. They obviously need the revenue.

And if you you have PS4, Vita, BraviaTV, or [later] supported android smartphone or tablet, you can take that $10 disc and, by the words of TLOU fans, "shove it up your ass".

PSNow is STREAMING service, where that streaming is achieved by giving each game session around 0.3-0.4 TFLOP of processing power. It can't be ultra cheap, because investment and support cost is huge. And something needs to be left for making profits.

4hr options is there for people who want to test out games, 1 week pricing sounds most appealing to me personally.

Because EA's service vault amounts to what? 4 titles: FIFA 14, Madden 25, Peggle 2, and Battlefield 4.

Where as a rental service not only allows you to rent games from any publisher but also isn't limited to only current gen offerings. I am baffled people are still trying to equate the two.

For me the only game I would have been interested from EAA was Battlefield 4..... and I already purchased it... because I was interested in it.

It's clearly more of talking point now that EA has unveiled their service but as you noted, equating the two isn't the best thing.

Such a rip off. What was the point of this Sony??!!

To play large catalogue of games from PlayStation consoles no matter what supported device you have around you?

At the current rental rates a monthly sub would be higher than your cable bill

I hope they will offer $9.99 monthly sub in which users have 5-10 slots that they can freely fill with games form entire offered catalogue, slots that reset each month. This way, anyone can play whatever they want, but they cant access everything at once.

Pretty sure they would most likely throw ads in there and not lower prices.

Can't you buy Darksiders outright for $15? Also, this isn't really too helpful as it is only one title. More examples would be helpful

Sure, if you have a PS3 and want to own the game (instead of wanting to finish it just once, in which case a 7 day rental would still be cheaper).

Also, this service is to stream content to PS4, Vita, Bravia TVs etc. as well so buying is not an option in those cases.

A four hours renting can make sense if you have friends coming over for the evening and you wish to have something to play with them. That's for the kind of games that are meant to be played and not "completed". ;)
