Square Enix RPGs on sale on North American PSN

PSP Tactics continues to be one of the worst tragedies in gaming. Such a sadness that people continue to buy this. If the spell slowdown and out of sync sound effects aren't enough to send people running, maybe it's our own fault. Maybe SE knew.

That shit is annoying, but it is still a superior game to the original PSX version.

I already own most of these. $20 is a great price for FFX/X-2. I've already purchased it for $30 in a previous sale for Vita. Now I wish I waited. I'm tempted to get it for PS3 too, but I'm sure it'll go on sale for $10 someday and I'll be fine with the Vita version for now.

$10 for Final Fantasy XIII-2 is tempting.

I found this video that compares loading times of the PS1 version of Chrono Trigger from PS3 to Vita. PS3 has 7 second load screen while the Vita does it in 4.4 seconds with Disc Load Speed set to Fast. I already own it on DS, but considered buying it just to have it on my Vita. Apparently, it was on sale previously for $3.50, so I'll just wait for that sale again.

There's an Activision Sale too.The Amazing Spider-Man is only ~$20. I thought the ASM movies were mostly awful, so I don't know if the games will be enjoyable for me or not. Especially since the first one has the lazy web-slinging mechanics that don't actually attach to anything...

I wouldn't have played the PSP port of Tactics if I hadn't played the original first. I know it's been beaten into the ground, but the technical issues really are terrible and I want to bitch about WotL at every opportunity. Almost all of the music doesn't sound right, the sound effects are distorted and play out of sync, and the slowdown is so miserable that you have to become accustomed to every spell or ability taking twice as long while simultaneously making everything chug. Throwing a goddamn rock makes the game crawl. These are largely issues with the battles, but since you spend most of the time in battles... yeah, it just sucks. The localization and added content are nice, but barely worth it for me.

It's worth it for the Alex O Smith translation.

It's far from ideal but still better than the original.

That's what's so frustrating- there are improvements that make it so tempting, but it isn't the better version. The translation is window dressing, which is better than the original for sure- but the original actually functions correctly!

Thanks for the video. I was curious what was the best way to play the games on my Vita.

Anyone have any personal experience re: load time for Chrono Trigger and FF V and VI on Vita? I saw a video on YT that showed CT loading ~40% faster on Vita, but personal experience would be welcomed :)

On Vita Chrono Trigger is very playable with disc speed on fast. The load times are cut down greatly over playing on PS1/PS3. Really the only times where it was still unbearable were character naming screens and stores. Pulling up the main menu still takes a few seconds, but going room to room feels almost normal. Still the worst version of CT, but playable on Vita. Just don't bring your saves to PS3, it still sucks on there.

So tempted to get X/X-2. $20 is such a good deal.

But I'm probably gonna wait until Black Friday to try and pick up the physical version for that price.

Is it possible to install X and X-2 separately after buying both? I only have a 4 GB Vita card.

Yes you can install them separately. They're around 3.3 gigs each iirc.

You probably want to upgrade that Vita memory stick to 32/64gb especially if you're a Playstation Plus user, I only had to buy 3 games for the Vita(P4G, FFX/X-2HD, Lumines), and I got a ton of quality games just by being subscribed to Playstation Plus.

I've only played the PSP version, and if no one told me there was slowdown I wouldn't have noticed. It does move slower when casting spells and all, but it seems more a stylistic choice to cinematically show the spell's effect than anything else. I'm wondering how the game is actually meant to play now.

Planning to get:

FFV
FFVI
FFVII
FFVIII
FFX/X-2

For $40 total. I already own FF Origins and FFIX.

But it'll have to be Friday (payday). This sale will still be going then, I assume?

Ugh, I basically want them all (I - IX). $54.91 for all that is probably a great deal but hard for me to pull the trigger. Finishing up FFXHD on Vita right now. I've never played any but VII and VIII (which I never finished) and Vita RPGs are all I really have the ability and want to play right now.

You're gonna want to get FFIX, just do it and thank me later...

You didn't notice the sound effects out of sync due to the slowdown?

Stylistic choice... I've never heard it put that way before.

Knowing myself I'm going to get them all, they are sitting in my cart right now just waiting to be purchased. Just gotta pull the trigger... (forgot to mention tactics is in there too, that's the most likely to get removed)

Man FFX is really tempting for Vita. Was thinking of waiting for a price drop on the physical version, but this isn't too bad either.

Tempting. Thinking about buying VII, VIII, and IX and ditching my old disc copies. And maybe picking up FFX-HD finally.

Here's for a different question from the norm, as there are many Final Fantasy fans in this thread:

FFT, which version should I get: the PSP version on the Vita or the IOS version on IPad? I'd rather play the new translation. Is the slowdown really that bad? And did they fix it for the IOS version? Thanks.

Should I get Final Fantasy 4? It seems a little expensive when compared to the Playstation games...

Edit: To the above, I have no experience with the slowdown, but personally I'd pick the version that has traditional controls without really a second thought. Only if the iPad version was way cheaper would I consider it. Jut my two cents.

what about FFV - does it suffer from similar issues?

Yes it does since it's a port of the SNES ver. What makes it even worse is the translation done to the game is piss poor, but it is still playable.
Really for FF5, get the GBA ver. if you can.

FF 8 or 9? I won't have much time to play it, but I'll be honest, I just want an easy FF game to play through. Which one should I get? Never played either before.

Compared to FF VI and CT the load times on FF V are negligible. The transition into battle has a swooshing effect and a fade-in from black as well as a fade-out at the end of the battle. It isn't as bad as VI. But those extra fade in and outs definitely make it a tad slower than the SNES or GBA versions.

There also isn't annoying slowdown when entering the menu, like in VI or CT.

By far the biggest issue with the game is the poor translation (ie: Wyvern = Y-Burn). But V has such a bare-bones story that I can't say you are missing too much. The gameplay is just fine. GBA is preferred, but any FF V is better than no FF V.

Ok, cool.

Think I'll hold off on upgrading the memcard til the prices go down a bit more. :p

So I've been playing 5 hours with FFVI PS Vita version. The game is playable at faster disc speeds, and does lag abit, but not at 10-15 seconds that others might claim, I clocked a battle start at about 2-3 seconds lag and battle ends about 3-4 seconds. I've played the SNES, GBA, IOS, PS1 and now PS Vita version and yes the GBA version is the best for fast battles and non-existant loading times, followed by the IOS, although touch controls suck IMO, but PS1 is playable, if you wanna own it on PS Vita. Barely notice the lag and playing OK.

this isn't even a question

9 is one of the best in the series

8 is probably the worst (13 may take that crown in retrospect)

Instead of berating you for having a terrible opinion, i'll note that you either love or hate Final Fantasy 8. There is no in between. Personally, it's my favorite Final Fantasy and it's not particularly close.

Hmmm, how's the difficulty of 9?

Any other recommendations?

9 is just a joy to play, wonderful cast, beautiful art direction... the bromance and romance plots are both the best ive seen in an rpg

i mean, to each their own but 8's broken junction system that punishes you for using magic, unlikable characters, bad plot with a Terrible twist...

having said that FF8 does have the single greatest mini game of all time: Triple Triad is amazing and is so good it almost makes up for all the bad stuff in the game

I am in love with Final Fantasy 8. Yeah, the junction system can be a drag but other than that, it's a,beautiful game.
