Rise of the Tomb Raider timed Xbox exclusive for Holiday 2015 (No PS/PC, SE publish)

I have an Xbone and I refuse to buy this game because of this scummy bullshit.

This is just so weird. It doesn't strike me as a system seller. Neither did Scalebound or Dead Rising 3. It seems to be in line with Ryse as a 3rd party version of a Sony game. Ryse being analogous to GOW and this to Uncharted. There doesn't seem to be any real reason for Microsoft to pick this as exclusive except it would be cheaper than other games I suppose.

I pretty much played all Tomb Raider games on a playstation system. This one is a real shocker.

You mean like how Mass Effect and Bioshock started out on Xbox 360, and were initially 360 exclusives?

Yep, and I bought a 360 specifically to play those. But that made sense - both systems had games I wanted to play, both were good in different areas and neither had a long term vision I completely disagreed with.

I'm not buying an XBO. It's underpowered and shackled by the incredibly anti-consumer crap they initially loaded it with, and I don't want to be a part of that, now or in the future. It just means the money I spend on games will go on other stuff.

Over time these are the kind of games that help boost your sales. Sony caught up last generation with quality over quantity. Microsoft is on the right track.

Lol, I don't think half are on xbox. Most likely most fan base is PC because very old series. 1996 I think

Yeah, that was way before consoles.
Every person I know that loved/s Tomb Raider played it on Playstation.

Quite the dick move in my opinion.

What's even crazier is that S-E is giving up on the game even selling in several regions, including Japan. The business makers in the company are straight up insane.

To put this in perspective, the game shipped 6.5 million copies, which is more than the last update we got for Final Fantasy XIII (6.3 million copies).

They actually took the biggest franchise they have and made it exclusive to a system where they'd have to sell to over 50% of the userbase to even get in the realm of their previous success.

Lol Square. I can't say I'm surprised though. These are the same guys who made All the Bravest

I'm sure they're making money off the backend due to the deal. Plus they get to sell a definitive version a year later for even more money.

And they were disappointed!

Makes a good point

No he doesn't.

If Microsoft are announcing this as an exclusive now, if probably means their money is being used to help fund the game. For a third-party publisher like Square that's not doing so well financially, covering the cost of development up front can be a huge boon, rather than gambling high development budgets on a potentially larger fanbase. Whatever the game goes on to sell, their initial investment for the game has likely been covered by Microsoft's funding.

I very much doubt there is an evil conspiracy here, and I don't think it's stupid financing. AAA development is getting more expensive. You're going to see more examples of platform holders subsidizing and funding third party games as the costs keep going up.

Did Bayonetta 2 get this sort of response?

To an extent, but in that case it's understandable since that game literally would not exist if not for Nintendo. In this case it's 100% a cash grab and S-E taking versions of the game away from people on platforms that supported the previous game. I wasn't a huge fan of the last game, but outright buying games to remove them from other platforms isn't something that ANYONE should be supporting on any side.

I'm thinking that today's Lara is not that big to bring enough Xbox one sales to MS nor enough sold copies to the developers.

Strange offer by MS and even stranger that Squaresoft accepted.

Rusty would be true if this game were XB1 only but I thought it was also coming to 360.

Looooot of angry PC/PS4 users in this thread. Didn't know so many people were Tomb Raider fans, lol.

But on a serious note, isn't this the kind of move that seriously, and potentially, permanently damages the sales of an IP? Sure SE probably made bank on the deal, but what about the next game in the franchise? It's probably only going to sell as well as the exclusive title.

This is the sort of move that kills an IP.

I agree, the franchise didn't run that good to begin with, if MS can't catch up to Sony in terms of sales (which is really though already), Tomb Raider will suffer badly. Goodbye, Crystal Dynamics.

Big 3rd party exclusive in this day and age is really unexpected

I wonder how much this kind of thing cost for MS

Sense, your reply makes none.

Bullshit, you're spewing. Stop hating on the community for I don't see anything coming out out it but bullshit.

This is huge news and people have every right to express their concern.

Tomb Raider started on PlayStation.
Tomb Raider sold more on PS4 than Xbox One.

Knowing these facts, making this exclusive is huge news. Oh but please, hate the community and the Sony bias!

Doesn't have to be *just* for this game. Its just an additional exclusive game to add to the list. Cumulatively, exclusives get people to buy consoles.

cmulatively, it also costs quite a bunch to lock down developers and - while people will probably cave and buy your damn console - it doesn't mean they'll all of a sudden become a huge fan of your platform, especially after you having taken their beloved franchises hostage.

It might make me want to buy an Xbone (against which i have nothing, personally, but i didn't really mean to get all consoles again this generation, for space and decluttering reasons) but it sure as hell doesn't make me any more inclined to sign up for Xbox live and get multiplats on the bone. i'm already locked in with the PS4 ecosystem this gen. :/
