Microsoft is launching the XB1 in China and over a dozen new key markets soon. The 2:1 ratio will vanish relatively quickly.

holding a 2:1 advantage after one year is doable. maybe even after 18 months. But to do so over the course of the entire generation when the other console is building the kind of momentum the XB1 has these past few months? It's not sustainable.
You're acting as if PS4 isn't gaining momentum either. Destiny beta, white PS4, Bloodborn, PS Now, Morpheus (personal tipping point for me),...

It's got momentum, XBO will not suddenly close the gap ever. This is the reality. They just have to try and stay as competitive as possible, and no doing stuff like the ROTTR deal isn't going to help long-term.

Thank you for this! So it seems PS4 has outperformed everything except (possibly) Wii.

Any chance we could get handheld comparisons? Specifically GBA, DS, PSP & 3DS?

The only reason the ps2 got beaten though is because it's basicly only japan. If you would add the 8 months from the us and eu launch it would beat the ps4.

Can't wait to see how many consoles are sold in September.

I bet there are 200K pre-orders on that white console destiny bundle alone WW.

10m in 9 months for a new console with " no gaMez! " is pretty exciting stuff

VR seems something that tech-focused people find cool, but if people were against wearing simple glasses for 3D, I'm skeptical it's going to take off all that much. I think it'll find an active, but smaller community.

3D and VR are very, very different things.

VR is what can push gaming into a new era.

Ok, analysis about these numbers

USA LTD up to June (NPD)- 3,600,000
Japan LTD up to August 3rd, 2014 (Media Create)- 653,377

Now, theory: PS4 sold another 250,000 units in US in July (given the historical June-to-July transitions and PS4 performance in June, this should be an optimistic scenario), so US LTD up to July's NPD tracking period (end is on August 2nd, 2014) would be 3,850,000.

This brings the US + Japan most recent total up to 4,503,377

This means that, in the rest of the world, PS4 sold around 5,500,000 since it's 10 millions+ sold to customers. Probably a little more, since the US number is an optimistic estimate. So, ROTW = US x 1.5. From what I remember, Europe has certainly been a better market for Sony than US, but not that better, and not with a console doing well like PS4. So, the only reasonable explanation is that all the countries outside US, mainland Europe and Europe itself are giving a good contribution to the console's numbers, since it's impossible that Europe alone contributed for 5,500,000 units.

EDIT: Just forgot...congrats, Sony!
Yep. People are underestimating the role of places like Brazil, Middle East and South Africa, and might be overestimating the role of China (some to comical proportions).

I'm still surprised it's 10+ million already. Pop that champagne Sony.

EDIT: Didn't Kojima say something like he'd get onto something big when next-gen did 10 million? Time to own up, Kojima.

Apart from Destiny how is that different than any other year?... GTA V is an up-port. It'll sell well, but don't expect that (over Destiny) to push consoles... Doubtful imo.

Seven million in the next four months? Ehh, I don't know.

The PS3 typically made ~70% of their yearly shipments in the back half of the calendar year. Assuming a similar trend, 7m in the next 4.5 months is not really out of the question.

For reference, as of September 20, 2007, Wii sold 13.17M globally. So it's more or less tracking near Wii.

Are you sure? Canada does not match sales ratios of the US. Everyone I know has a PS4 and only one person has an Xbox One. This is also the country where Nintendo 64 outsold PlayStation, so yeah.

The N64 outsold the PS in Canada? Y'all got some good taste. This almost redeems you for Celine Dion and Bryan Adams.

Almost.

I actually don't get it... How exactly did they sell 10m already? Sales in the US are about 1m in the past 4 months, so did the rest of the world buy 2m PS4s in the past 4 months?
Well, you know, rest of the world is quite big.

I guess it is conceivable that PS4 continues selling 1M a month for Aug-Oct and then picking up some speed. 16M by end of the year should be a safe bet. Could be more.

PS4 sold around 3 million in the last quarter and this quarter ( Jul , Aug ,Sept) should at least sell as much as the last quarter taking it to about 12 million & Oct,Nov & Dec will be even bigger at least 5 million sold in that quarter.

Very impressive and most deserving. That's why I love competition. Can't wait to see what MS and PS bring in to the table in the future as we go along this generation.

Congrats Sony!

I am from Canada as well and I can second this. Know about 10 people with a PS4 and not a single one with an Xbox One. And lots of these people were 360 gamers.

All anecdotal of course but I have yet to see an actual running XB1 here outside of a Microsoft store.

EDIT: And yes, me and my friends all had a N64 back in the day but only 2 of them had a PS :) I didn't get mine until near the end of its lifecycle.

Congrats to Sony, but I'm honestly kind of disappointed that the PS4 alone is selling so well. It still seems to me that while it's a fairly well thought-out console, it's nothing really special or unique about it. It's just very safe, which makes sense for Sony after the PS3. The 360 brought online interactions forward in a huge way, the Wii introduced a new control mechanism that caught on fire, etc. The PS4 is basically the market embracing "just do the same stuff as always + graphics/power!" I realize that both Nintendo & Microsoft completely fell flat on their face out of the gate, but at least they were trying to push the market forward in some way, even if both approaches were fairly misguided. I honestly feel like their mistakes is probably a huge contributor to PS4 sales. I'm happy that there's a good bit of demand for traditional games in the ROTW though.'

That's really narrow-minded you know.

I'll never understand someone thinking a product doesn't deserve sales. You may not find anything special about it but obviously 10 million others do.

And don't solely put MS and Nintendo's fuck up's on Sony's success. Sony had a simple goal since February 2013 and stuck with it. Unlike MS who still can't figure out what the XB1 is trying to do. You're acting as if they did nothing at all to get to 10 million.

[UPDATE] Following the publication of this story, Sony sent out an official release regarding the PS4's 10 million milestone. That figure accounts for worldwide sales as of August 10, and represents the "fastest and strongest" growth in PlayStation hardware in Sony's history.

"The responses we have received for the PS4 system's unique gameplay experiences powered by the network, along with its vast game portfolio has been phenomenal, and I am absolutely delighted that PS4 was able to reach this commemorative milestone in less than 9 months," SCE CEO Andrew House said. "We're so grateful for the enormous support from PlayStation gamers worldwide, and we look forward to bringing even more exciting content and services in the months ahead."

In terms of software sales, Sony has now sold a combined 30 million copies of retail and downloaded PS4 games through the PlayStation Store as of August 10.

WII 7 months, 12 days - June 30th, 2007 - 9.27 million
PS4 8 months, 29? days - August 12th?, 2014 - 10.0 million

Wii numbers are shipped to retail. But it sold out pretty much everywhere.
The timeframe is a bit skewed, since there were different launch for different regions and we don't know the exact date when ps4 reached the 10 million mark. I'd say there are on par (at this point). Wii may be slightly ahead - because of Japan. And it was selling for 150 €/$ less.

Sure, regional delays tend to muck up older comparisons. I guess if you launch align regions PS2 and Wii still come out ahead?

If not wanting consumer and industry damaging business practices rewarded with sales makes me wrong, then so be it.

I am sure if I check your post history, I won't find anything like that when Destiny exclusive content was announced for PS4. Hypocrisy at it's finest.

And in a more stable global economy

I also assume this just further confirms that there's no chance of a price drop this year for this thing. Clearly not needed.

Yeah, denying access to one strike and a few maps on a different console is the same thing as denying access to a whole game on different consoles.
