IGN: EA says "no one's getting access [to Sims 4] ahead of release" for reviews

I've been wishing someone would try and compete with The Sims for ages now. Right now, they know they don't gotta do squat because there is literally no alternative..

What could the competition offer that would make regular Sims fans go "hmm, maybe I'll buy THAT other game this time"? I mean, apart from having things previous Sims had and The Sims 4 doesn't...

Maybe it won't work without online functionality and they've learned their lesson from Sim City (town). Review environments mean nothing in RL.

I can't get over how fake that racoon or whatever it is looks.

No early reviews, OH NO SUB 8 SCORE

Sims 4 has no MOVEOBJECTS_ON, that should be a negative for all builders.

Not a surprise at all. The Sims 3 was missing a shitload of features at launch too,

Sims 3 had more vanilla content than vanilla Sims 2 actually. I don't recall it having missing features that were considered expansions in Sims 2 (hell, it even had features that were expansions in 2, something 2 didn't do for its base).

Well I'm expecting reviews to carry the tone of 'yea there are some things missing but the game is still really good 8/10'. And EA probably knows that this is one of their franchises that is most immune to reviews or forum criticism from a sales point of view, so they don't much care beyond that.

Same as SimCity, i agree i just dont trust gaming media with EA games (or at all).

I was looking at buying this day one, but all the negative news about it, has made me decide to wait and see for at least a week after launch.

Exactly. Anyone that knows about this and still buys the game day 1 to find it a bug ridden piece of shit lacking content deserves it, IMO. Not that EA should put out a game like this, but we all know it happens.
Well, to be fair, a "bug ridden experience" is par for the course with The Sims. It's like they got bored with corrupting save files after making sure all save files would eventually self-destruct in Sims 2, so they decided to go for style points.

In The Sims 3 they made it so your save file could be permanently infected by zombies with The Sims 3 Supernatural. That's dedication to the fine art of save game corrupting bugs, you know. And no, I'm not making that one up. If you play The Sims 3 Supernatural... patch your game ASAP.

Funny enough, this is not the strangest bug in the series. That's Sims 1 where the vampire template can be added to a game system file, cause the game to crash hard and require a reinstallation. This action happens autonomously in the game if two specific NPCs ever turn up on the same lot.

So when it comes to horrible bugs, I can only say one thing: Bring it on! And no cop-out with a day 1 patch, I want to see the glory that is a v1.00 The Sims game in action again. Horrible bugs are almost a feature of the series at this point.

If this 'works' with the Sims then what are the odds they start doing this with titles like Hardline, Battlefield, sports games etc... ???

Gaming media can always choose to not cover these games. Getting early access ahead of the public was part of the value media companies got in exchange for spending time on a product. Now that it's gone...

That doesn't bode well.
There's no way the base game of the Sims 4 will flop. It's a mainline The Sims game, way too much brand loyalty there. What's going to be interesting is who the expansion packs do, because only games that people keep playing will sell expansions.

Well, time to revise the text for the Sims 4 OT. Again. Would you believe i actually had a variant of the Reviews header done in advance for a situation like this? Didn't actually expect to need it, but there you go.
I mean you no ill, really, but watching you struggle against the inevitable has been fairly entertaining. This must be some kind of Sisyphean punishment for something you've done in your previous life. Good luck, and keep a stiff upper lip.

(Also, I agree with your assessment regarding The Sims 4 sales. The game is just too big to fail out of the gates.)

And Battlefield

And Dead Space

And Dragon Age

I meant specifically PC-exclusive\focused franchises because even at EA's 'lowest' they still put out PC exclusives that where worthwhile at the very least. Since C&C 4 it seems they are doing their hardest to tarnish and ruin these ip's (anyone remembers Darkspore?).

Dead Space and DA are MP ip's that are probably more focused on the console skus. Battlefield transformation to MP franchise happened with BC 1&2. The issues 3&4 suffered from effected every version collectively.

Oh, I have a black enough sense of humor to find this all terribly hilarious myself. This was my most anticipated game this year and look at it. Even if the half that's left turns out good, it's still only half the game I expected it to be.

No, in a way, I'm glad I called that OT so much in advance. Someone had to do that, anyway, and to quote another EA games character whose outlook seems to match my own right about now... "Had to be me. Someone else might have gotten it wrong." There will be snark, there will be facts. Cold, hard facts. (There will be a sizable list of missing features, for one.) And I'll do it right. Even if the game deserves a "Return to Shit Mountain" style OT about now. Because I'm not going to pull a Maxis and do only half of the expected features.

And no, I will not be singing Gilbert and Sullivan while posting it.

Honestly, I've no idea, and I guess that's been the problem. However, what you said at the end there is proabably what's got people saying that now is any prospective publisher/developers chance. Once people get their hands on TS4 and see how much stuff has gone MIA from the previous games, if someone else were to start waving their new life sim around going "Hey guys, look! It's The Sims, but we have EVERYTHING." they'd have much more of a chance of getting that series on it's feet than they would previous.

Alas, that's never going to happen, at least not now. The Sims will continue being the only option and either thrive undeservingly or slowly die out. :(

Edit: Holy crap.
I knew teens were the same height as adults, and I kinda figured that'd make them look similar...but never did I expect there would be absolutely NO visible difference. But now I find out that elder's look exactly the same too, only with gray hair? Jesus. I know elders were kind of an ignored life stage, but they at least made the effort to give them a hunch, wrinkles. etc to make them look the part. I can't believe this.

Has there ever been a "good" sims game?

There has been plenty of popular ones, but an actual "good" sims game?

I'm struggling with that one.

I like the Sims 1-3.

By the way, why the hell are they getting rid of the open world elements from the Sims 3 in the Sims 4? It was the best thing it had to offer to the franchise!

Oh yeah, because EA.

It only means the game will be great all around, please trust EA :^)

Equal acess is all we asked for r-right? No more pesky reviewers getting their dirty hands on glorious Sims before us.

Erm yes. Just because they seem casual doesn't mean they're bad.

Looks like there'll be no The Sims 4 reviews until after it's out. EA tells me no one's getting access ahead of release. I'm nervous.
Perhaps also a little sad that they didn't get to do an exclusive review.

I preordered Sims 4. Over a year ago I preordered it. The digital deluxe version. I'm a huge Sims fan and I'm fairly forgiving to EA. This is my origin from 8 months ago. (I've added a bunch of popcap stuff via humble bundle but thats all thats missing)

This may end up being my last EA game if its screwed up as bad as it seems.

Wait, how'd you get the Sims 1 complete collection and Alpha Centauri on that list?

Sadly this is the kind of IP that will sell well regardless of how bad it is. Regardless of how many features are missing or are sectioned off. I'm not one to ever wish something fails. But I also see the danger when a series becomes so big and the fan base becomes so loyal, that publishers can take advantage of the situation and push greedy practices without a fear of backlash.

After all was said and done none of the uproar or bad press over Sim City stopped it from selling like clockwork. And the Sims has a diehard fan base that live for the series (just go check tumblr). This series is ripe for the picking. And EA loves it.

First time actually seeing a picture of this. Jesus this is lazy.

Just like the movie industry, if the game was actually good the developer would be screaming it from the rooftops, instead of standing behind a "no review until after launch" facade.

Also just like the movie industry, it's rare when a movie does not have an advance press screening. Movies that do this know they're bad and hope that moviegoers won't care about reviews. I remember one newspaper "reviewed" a movie that had no press screening by providing a list of all previous not-screened movies that eventually got reviewed. Every single one, 1 star.

The Sims' audience won't care about reviews either. It WILL sell like hotcakes. Guaranteed.

"Fairly forgiving" is an understatement, going by that list.

Yeah, you're going to take to Sims 4 just fine.

Do people not realize that RIP stands for "rest in peace"? You're literally saying rest in peace in peace.

Pretty sure it's a GAF inside joke

OT: Just like SimCity, the creation tools in this game actually seem really great but everything surrounding it looks to be a hot mess. You think they have the apology already written?
