New SILENT HILL by Hideo Kojima & Guillermo Del Toro starring Norman Reedus

You mean with the exception of Origins, Shattered Memories (which had a forced, unearned twist) and Downpour? There have been all of two Silent Hill games with that sort of thing as the twist.

I stopped after Homecoming because it was just that bad. Played a bit of Downpour and stopped when the monsters were driving cars or some crap, I don't know.

Maybe I'm wrong a bit, but the stereotype does persist.

The twist in downpour is still very much revolving around that.Whether or not the protagonist unlawfully killed/Hurt someone was one of the questions of the plot.

I just think it's weird to throw up that kind of argument. Downpour's twist was original to the series. If Downpour tried to mimic something else I might agree, but it really didn't. It didn't feel like the same sort of thing at all. In fact I thought it was clever how
it begins with you thinking it has something to do with Murphy's son, but that was just the stepping stone toward him going to jail, crossing paths with Seward, and then Seward using Murphy for his own agenda that Murphy initially agreed to but when he found out it was the other officer, he didn't go through with it and it wound up leaving the other guy in a vegetative state for the rest of his life. That was Murphy's actual guilt and it had nothing to do with killing someone or watching someone be killed-- he didn't die, but he felt responsible for what happened to the other guy
.

How that is aping Silent Hill 2's twist, I have no fucking clue.

The essence of the twist is the feeling of guilt because of a physical crime.Him dying or getting to a vegetative state is irrelevant.

I want it to somehow move further away from that.Silent Hill 3 and 4 ,to me , successfully dodged this.

Silent Hill Downpour intelligently switches around characters and events but its still somewhat constrained within SH2's domain.

I didn't feel like I was experiencing even remotely the same story or conclusion, but to each his own. I thought there were enough surprises and that the writing was coherent enough to where it felt much different. For me it was the details and how it was built up; what happened wasn't the same as what went down with James and Mary. Similarities, I guess, but I find them to be more general similarities than specific.

Ok now that I think more about it, Downpour might just be different enough.Anne Cunningham/Murphy relationship is new to the series and how it ties in to the overall plot was well done.

Indeed. Just when you think you've unearthed the game's biggest/central idea, there is still one final coda that still managed to feel organic rather than tacked on. It provided a really interesting perspective.
I liked how it suggested that Anne was the actual protagonist and Murphy is the "boogeyman" in her mind; in many ways you legitimately fight a final boss with Murphy, and a final boss as Murphy
. Very unique concept that was well thought out. It was like
playing a villain, but only from the POV of another character; Murphy isn't an antagonist, but he is to Anne, and that's all that matters when you're in Silent Hill
.

It's my second favorite story in the series in terms of actual narrative and character arcs.

Awesome observations. Saying "lol another SH2 ripoff" does a huge disservice to Downpour's plot.

Another thing I personally got from the story - and this may be way off, but I'm just throwing it out there - is that Murphy isn't in Silent Hill because he subconsciously wants to be punished. He's there because
Anne wants him to be punished. That explains why Downpour's Otherworld is so frenetic and dangerous, with all the spike traps, falling objects, etc...Anne wants Murphy dead, so the Otherworld, which seems to come from both of them, is shaping itself to her will. He just ends up dealing with his own baggage over Charlie because he happens to be in Silent Hill anyway, but his primary reason for going through hell is because Anne dragged them both into it through her obsessive desire for revenge. There are some great parallels between the two of them regarding the nature of vengeance and the consequences it can have on innocent people. I also loved the concept of the Bogeyman and how he can appear as different people depending on who's manifesting him, becoming Napier to Murphy and Murphy himself to Anne
. Fuck, Downpour's narrative is so interesting and yet so unappreciated. Someone should make a thread.

These are some really , really good observations I must say.

Yeah the story is good but the execution and the game itself could have been better. That's why its underrated.

Hey guys, I've never played any Silent Hill games. Is SH1 decently playable today? Would play it on my PS3.

Downloaded P.T. last night and decided to give it a shot.

I noped out after 3 minutes. I've never been able to play many horror games, but that atmosphere immediately made me start to sweat and panic. Nothing even happened, it was just me walking around in silence listening to the radio broadcast. I might try it again during daylight or something...

Downloaded and played the P.T. demo last night..holy fuck was it ever creepy. I really hope that they keep this kind of tone for the horror in Silent Hills. It really felt like the game was playing with your mind which is exactly how Silent Hills brand of horror should be.

I was playing with a friend and she screamed from things as simple as a door cracking open because the level of tension created was so perfect.

Good stuff. Never thought of the otherworld that way.

Disagree on the thread though, unless you want to see people take drive-by shits on it strictly because Team Silent didn't make it.

*sigh* if only it had better creature designs and less technical issues. It would be so much higher up on my list. Hell, it's not really low on my list to begin with, but those issues really keep it from truly shining.

The real game needs to have these first person sections as climaxes to certain sections. You play a good portion of it in third person, and it's a great Silent Hill game from that perspective, but then you have a first person sequence and you know the shit is about to get really serious. You know, like how John Woo movies are accented by gun fight sequences, or kung fu movies by, well, kung fu. Maybe not the best comparison, but you know what I mean.

Maybe have like four to six first person sequences throughout the game?

I'm glad I stopped playing and waited until the patch eventually came out. It did resolve a lot of the technical problems.

Obviously it didn't help with the horrendous monster design though.

Nah man, this isn't why.

This is why.

Bought SH1 on my PS3 the other day, and ebay'd 2-4. First time playing the series.

SH1 holds up well! Tank controls take about 10 minutes to get used to, but it's smooth sailing from there. Use the D-pad - analog was way to hard to use.

Voice acting is lousy, graphics are a little rough, but the game definitely feels "creepy" and is a lot of fun to play so far. Music direction is fantastic, too. Those freakin' sirens. Damn.

Also, I would recommend a guide. There's a lot of random items you need to find to progress. You know, 3 assorted keys that are across the map to open certain doors. That kind of thing.

Loving the amount of real discussion and appreciation of P.T. in here. Only real life friend I have that played it is a Halo fanboy and he was like, the controls are bad. That is, after I said my favorite thing to come out of Gamescom was P.T. He didn't get it, that's for sure.

I was concerned whether or not Kojima and his team gets why Silent Hill was so special, but apparently my concerns were completely unfounded. Kojima is a master at breaking 4th walls and I'm sure he'll have a lot of fun messing with players heads in this game. Can't wait.

There are some audio glitches caused by certain weapons, but otherwise it's fine. Better on PSP if possible.
Seems random for me. Just beat the game again, and didn't get a single audio glitch.

Glad you're enjoying it! The controls in SH1 always take me a while to get use to. I really like SH1 "bad' graphics, they just enhance the atmosphere IMO. The music in this game is by far the most unsettling. Those 3 keys you mentioned, did you look to the left of the door before you found the keys?
There is a map which marks the key locations.

If you're liking the first game, you are gonna love the other 3. :D

Same here! I felt like after playing P.T. it would be the perfect time to replay SH1 (since I never beat it when I was little). After playing it I feel like most horror games nowadays pale in comparison.

Was listening to "Black Fairy" last night. What a hopelessly depressing song...and yet I loved it. I hope tunes similar to that are in P.T

Not sure if this has been discussed yet, but how did people not immediately identify PT as a Silent Hill "thing" when the quick save icon appears? It's the Halo of the Sun, albeit a really reductionist version, similar to the one found in the later, Western-developed SH games.

I finally watched a walkthrough and it comes up every time the character walks through the door and beings the loop.

Likely because nobody expected another SH.
Also how many people are actualy paying atention to the save icon while ingame and for those who did , how many would make the conection between a halo of a sun and Silent hill ?

Like mentioned above, no one expected it.

And at the conference it wasn't introduced by Konami.

Is anyone else bothered by them modeling the character after Norman Reedus? I don't really mind him doing the voice acting, but it strikes me as them wanting to cash in on Walking Dead fame by modeling the main guy after him.

It worries me a little for some reason.

Maybe they just went with a decent actor that has the looks and acting chops needed for the character they're visualizing. It's entirely possible that they thought it would help bring more attention to the game, but the work of any actor chosen for the role would have likely been brought into question. All I care about is the writing, acting, and character arc. But then again I don't like Walking Dead so I honestly didn't even recognize his name when it appeared in the footage.

Paying for the exclusivity of something made to announce a game seems rather pointless.
They've drummed up a ton of hype.

You really think Sony wouldn't be shouting from the rooftops about an exclusive Silent Hill game if they had it? Of course they would be.

Nevertheless, people are going to associate this multiplatform title with the PlayStation 4 because of this very original reveal.

It's serving its purpose.

I feel the opposite. It clearly shows how smart Kojima is on how to bring attention to this series. SH fan should realize by now that without any afford to make this series more mainstream it could be the last one.

I think it's a fairly smart way to try and attract Western audiences without going all Action Shootbang like RE did.

I'm very distrustful of Kojima. I don't like Metal Gear and I'm very much afraid of him screwing up Silent Hill for me forever.

Part of the appeal of SH for me has always been how it does it's own thing. I'm not sure I want them pandering to X demographic at all so blatantly, I honestly just want to get lost in their universe.

We'll see I guess. I'm super skeptical of this one, but at least they're throwing a bigger budget at it. I hope to be proven wrong with my disdain for Kojima, but I *really* hate how custscene heavy and overblown all his stuff I've played is.

Kojima's been taking pretty big steps to make that not the case. Snake Eater did a good job of keeping cutscenes dynamic and interesting, while Peace Walker has a perfect cutscene to gameplay ratio. Ground zeroes only has a handful of cutscenes and while they're a bit long they're really fantastic in cinematography.

More importantly, Kojima uses a lot of horror elements in MGS to begin with, and he fucks with the player directly. The teaser proved he could do atmosphere, so i'm really excited to see how he gets to the player.

How far are you?

Not very. About 3 hours.
Still in the alternate school, about to fight the first boss.

Excited to dive back in tonight. Like someone else said, the bad graphics do kind of add a bit to the atmosphere. Fun ride so far and I'm super excited to see the next few games in the series as I've heard 2 and 3 is where things really shine.

TGO

Hype Train conductor. Works harder than it steams.
Sony paid for it.

Why is this so difficult for people to grasp?
You don't truly believe that do you?
It's made by kojima, obviously it be on the PlayStation 4 it's was probably the only version he thought of doing for this, if you had to pay for the demo Konami would have told him to make it for all platforms like Metal Gear Solid V and Silent Hill s will be because that's what Konami wants.
With this it was all down to him, hence why no other versions was made.
I doubt very much any money was involved from Sony.

I'm not sure Konami wants to release a game that virtually nobody will buy.

You're jumping to a lot of conclusions based on one name at the end of a teaser trailer at the end of a very effective and scary teaser demo. Chill out a bit maybe.

If Kojima's just as involved with this as he was with Lords of Shadow, I don't think you have much to worry about.
