His best beats are standout tracks on shitty albums or great beats ruined by bad rapping and/or songwriting... for the most part.

Common - The Light (Remix)
The original song is better than the remix... But the remix beat on its own is way better than the original. Funny.

Bilal - Reminisce
Robert Glasper mentioned this joint once. You hear that bassline? That was composed by stringing bass parts from three different records together.

Busta Rhymes - Show Me What You Got
I hate the rapping on this so I always listen to the Instrumental. Grimey.

A Tribe Called Quest - Find A Way
He sampled Japanese Techno for this. Yep.

J Dilla- E=MC² (feat. Common)
This fool sampled Giorgio Moroder using a vocoder, slowed it the fuck down and chopped it. Listen to the sampled part here.

A Tribe Called Quest - Get A Hold
This one is dark as fuck. The drums are slick (that kick drum fucks me up) and the vocal sample sounds eerie. That sample is actually sampled from some Beatles clone in the 60s. It's pitched down too. Listen to the sample here.

Also, listen to his work on Fantastic Vol. 2 by Slum Village if you haven't already. And Common's Like Water For Chocolate was produced by him almost entirely.

I hope you aren't saying Common, Pharcyde, Tribe, etc are bad rappers. But I agree that some of the local stuff he did features wack rappers. I'm looking at you, Frank n Dank.

Dilla got sick right before he was going to do some major shit with good rappers. He was going to do an album with DOOM, Ghost, Mos Def, etc.

They aren't bad rappers but they wrote bland songs on his beats sometimes. But tbh, the beats I listed were decent songs for the most part. (Except show me what you got and star 69
And yeah the worst is his stuff with rappers like frank n dank

The worst part is how frankndank got some of his best beats man.
Too bad Dilla didn't work with more famous (and talented) artists on purpose.

Some people don't fuck with neo-soul stuff, and a lot of the folks Dilla worked with were knee deep in that shit. Bilal, Common, The Roots, D'Angelo, Badu...they were all pioneering that stuff at the time. I'm not a big fan but respect the genre.

I definitely would have preferred to hear more up tempo stuff on Dilla's beats, given how hard the drums are.

looking up future listening now, and yeah to this day i hate hearing groove is in the heart without tip's verse, didn't know it was the same producer though, neat

Common's Electric Circus gets a lot of hate but it has some nice standout tracks produced by Dilla that are uptempo.

Didn't Dilla also influence a lot of Voodoo? I don't think he gets any production credit, but I remember Questlove talking about it. No wonder that album is so good.

girl i'm currently talking to (i think) went to austin a few weeks ago and shared photos of this and i was mad jealous (finding graffiti is one of my favorite things to do whenever i'm in a city)

it was between toronto and denver for my boy's bachelor last month, no regrets, but Toronto still on my list.

keep in mind i was born and raised in minnesota which basically makes me an honarary canadian, a status which would then be revoked for my inability to ice skate.

yeah it gets yanked if you cant skate. at the boarder to get back into canada, the guards used to have you sing the hockey night in canada theme song, to prove you were canadian. honest to god.
