In Japan, New 3DS 'Filters' The Internet, Unless You Pay $0.30 Extra

1) Kid asks parents to buy a game from the store with their card.
2) Kid has access to porn.

Perhaps not the best method.

How is this a good idea when you can easily put parental locks like every other device in existence? This is cheap of them.

There are parental locks available, didn't stop girls getting picked up by pedophiles using swapnote.

Atleast this way they're forced to be on unless someone who is actually responsible enough to access the content can do so.

Keeps the blame away from Nintendo for that kind of stuff as well.

E: Unless this filter is just the internet and not also other forms of online communication on the 3DS?

"Mom, Dad, I want to buy this cool new game for 30 cents if you register your credit card. With Nintendo, that's a name you can trust with your money! Is that alright?"

"Sure son!"

.....

I could understand using credit card verification, but actually charging something is kind of silly. But I don't watch porn on my Gameboy, so whatever.

Makes sense. A kid could get the card and have it verified and return it without their parents knowing. This way there is a charge that will show up on a bill so if parents check their statements they'll know.

How is a parental control setting with a password not good enough for this?

I mean, fuck it, it's 30 cents, but it seems so god damn stupid when there's other perfectly easy ways of implementing parental controls that everyone else uses.

when i was 12, i was desperately searching for hentai.

so these days even this is not possible. what age are we living in?

1984?

It's not a bad idea for making your console more family friendly without really hurting your userbase, but couldn't they refund the 29 cents once a credit card is registered.

On the other hand, this wouldn't be necessary if parents were more proactive in what they allow their children to access on the internet.

Pretty smart.

Especially if they bring back Letter Box (Swapnote). I'd have to be exclusive to N3DS, but hey - we'll take it.

Didn't they do something like that with the WiiU too? It was stupid then and it's stupid now. I get tired of Nintendo constantly trying to "protect" everyone. They should have just put parental options on by default.

I think it may be more about protecting themselves after some of the stuff that's happened in the past and some of the media put it on Nintendo more than the individuals committing the actions.

The whole point is to prove you're an adult by having a debit/credit card. If you have one, $0.30 should be nothing. Its just a validation.

I would imagine the 30 cents is the min. credit card companies charge, so they are breakin even with this and is purely just a parental control thing.

Is this strictly porn sites or anything Nintendo considers a NSFW site?

For example, will I need it to access 4chan or any other non porn adult websites?

this only outrages me dependent on the content that is blocked.

If it literally is porn. Then I see no real harm in this porn tax.

Hell if someone is using a 3ds for that, they should have to pay.

Nothing new I am pretty sure that Nintendo did this before when the 3DS launched, unless my memory is playing up again.

If you're an adult setting this up for your child, be responsible and set up a password in order to access certain sites. It is not that hard.

This is a dumb answer to an issue that really isn't that big of a deal, but typically Nintendo in terms of a solution.

Will be interesting to see how they are handling it in Europe. Credit cards aren't common at all in a lot of European countries - they are actually frowned upon on in quite a few areas...

I had a debit card when I was 12, a lot of teens have debit cards. Just because you own one doesnt mean youre an adult. And .30 cents is still money I nor anyone should have to give to view internet in their own home when theyre already paying for the service.

It's not Nintendo's job to parent children. This is just another case of Nintendo being completely ass-backwards when it comes to finding a solution to a problem. Instead of implementing good parental controls, they decide to censor the internet instead.

That's not good enough! Put it behind a paywall. I can't believe there are people who believe this is a good solution. If the parent truly was worried about a kid running into porn or something then put on a lock.

Adults ignore these controls and then get angry when their child gets involved in something bad. The media jumps on Nintendo and say they aren't doing a good enough job.

This isn't some "get rich quick" scheme. They won't make very much money.

You have this NNID thing which has date of birth. Why not make it free if you link an NNID aged over 18. At least you can say the NNID on 3DS actually does something useful there (rather than act as a wall).

Also if it is about credit cards why not have it unlock after getting eShop credit.

I really don't like the patronizing, untrust Nintendo has at times...

And why not just 1 cent if they really HAVE to put a mandatory lock. Seems scummy to me.

Credit card companies will charge Nintendo a certain amount, I'm sure the .30 covers that. It's kinda like how places like PSN make you put at least 5 dollars for any transaction.

What are you basing your first two sentences on? I haven't heard anything about porn on 3DS besides this story.
