Fantastic idea. Parental control is great, but many times 1) the parent doesn't know enough about what they're buying their kids to filter this stuff, or 2) they're too busy fighting all kinds of fires and may/may not get around to fixing this.

But the fee is useless, is just a fee. Why every other devices can be locked and unlocked without this 30cents?
C'mon guys

exactly.

this level of security is achievable without the fee.

therefore the fee is dumb. it doesn't do anything.

I don't understand the confusion.

It is my understanding that there's ALWAYS a charge when it comes to verifying a credit card, it's just monumentally small in the grand scheme of things. Otherwise I'd have a crap ton of little .30¢ fees on my bank statements for all the McDonalds I ate at college.
If I understand the fees correctly, a simple verification should cost the company between three and four US cents, but Nintendo wants this to appear on the credit card statement so a simple verification isn't enough. Same reason Microsoft and Sony charge $0.50/ €0.49 for age verification.

It creates a paper trail leading directly to an adult's credit card. If a parent tries to complain or sue Nintendo over little Jimmy viewing porn on his new toy, Nintendo will have a solid defence.

Does Apple have a fee on iPod Touches and iPad?
Apple is not Nintendo. They are marketing different products to different demographics. Whether there is overlap in demographics is irrelevant. Nintendo has made a choice to make their products as family friendly as possible.

Honestly its a good idea. Rather than just registering an account with false information, now you need to process a little check credit card verification to make sure your an adult. Its a smart move. Nintendo is a toy company and if thats the only way they wanna make sure nothing offensive show up, let it be.

wow, they got systrem level DLC now?

pathetic.

they could easily charge nothing at all by just doing a hold and cancel like many sensible businesses do.

this is just a cash grab by a company desperately trying to stay relevant.

A cash grab, are you serious? 1) Nobody would even notice if this cost was incorporated into the MSRP and 2) Nintendo has to pay a transaction fee, so yeah they are totally getting rich on what's left of 30 cents per machine that gets a credit card registered on.

Meanwhile their competitors have you paying dozens of dollars yearly for petty stuff like online play (that doesn't work all the time) and all you hear is crickets, wtf. LOL

It's 30 cents, dude. Hell, we don't even know the USD price. It could be even lower.

It's not about the money, it's the principle. If all they want is credit card verification then they can just take the 30 cents and refund it. That's what Gamefly does when you sign up for an account. They charge a dollar and refund it.

That procedure costs them $0.20 or $0.30 - money they'll eventually get back because you now have an account. That's how businesses work, you don't get anything for free. But Nintendo doesn't operate porn sites, so disabling the filter doesn't benefit them in any way.

whoa...I basically agree with you on the Nintendo front, but why does everything have to turn into some fanboy b/s?

Vita online is free, PS+ is all about the bonuses...
PS3 online is free, PS+ is all about the bonuses...
PS4 some online is free, PS+ required for many online games...

These guys make an unprecedented hack on servers and now you get to say "that doesn't even work all the time" LOL, WOW also went down, and didn't a porn site as well? Even if you were talking about MS charging for there servers, it did offer great value to according to consumers, and they didn't mind paying for it. Who are we to say what a "bad" precedent is in regards to consumer products? Different consumers will feel differently.

Make your point without trying to downplay competitors, it taints your entire posts. And users who don't see why this is no big deal and always talking about setting some type of precedent or whatever needs to cut it out. What Nintendo is doing isn't evil, but they shouldn't do it because company A 3 years from now is going to allow the same thing on there hardware but charge a whole $1 to unlock the web! OOOOHHHH the horror -_-

This issue is not big enough to warrant a discussion about precedents being set.

On another note, I just found something on Xbox website, pretty interesting.

Why does Xbox Live charge me when I create an account for my child?

Microsoft and Xbox Live comply with the Children’s Online Privacy Protection Act (COPPA) regarding online account creation for children under age 13. COPPA requires that prior to gathering personal information from a child (under age 13), providers of online services obtain verifiable consent from the child’s parent. The most common method allowed by COPPA for obtaining parental consent is charging a small amount to the parent’s credit card. We charge 50 cents for this verification. These charges aren’t refundable.

Am I charged for each child I sign up?

Yes. Parental consent must be verified for each child. The credit card fee is one of the verification methods approved by COPPA.

Do other companies charge this fee?

Yes. Charging a credit card is the most commonly used method of verifying parental consent under COPPA.
Quoted for a new page. Did anyone know about this? Added a link for validity.

I would have cared less if they deducted the money when I purchased the 3ds, but I really don't like the credit card requirement.

If they deducted the money upon purchase there will be no way to verify the user's age. That's not how age verification works.

Nintendo is weird like that. But I'd rather pay thirty cents then have to submit the weird parental signature thing and wait a few days to "unlock" the child controls, like I have to do with the 3DS now just to enable voice chat and instant messaging.
