Nintendo reacting to that Pornhub graph. I don't see any problem with it. Some parents are simply to stupid to activate the parental controls.

Don't they have to pay around $0.30 for credit card fees anyway? So you're basically paying the credit card company lol

Uh... why not just parental controls, exactly?

I can't believe how many people here are saying this is a good idea over a free password system. I'm not one to fear my CC info being in companies, but it's absurdly unnecessary in this situation.

There are plenty of adults or teens that don't have a credit card. I suppose that's what they get for using a game console browser.

they should just do that and then after verified refund the 30 cents. why can't that work the same?

not that 30 cents should really matter (now we really are talking a price so low it's basically irrelevant), but I'm just wondering for discussion sake

if its a credit card fee they might not be able to.

I'm still not sure why this is necessary, but maybe it makes parents take the parental controls more seriously?

What are you basing your first two sentences on? I haven't heard anything about porn on 3DS besides this story.
There has been a few reported cases about actual porn, like the dad that bought an used 3DS at Gamestop, found porn on it and even when Gamestop exchanged it he still went to the local news.

Or non-porn but kinda similar like the mom that was going to sue Nintendo because a character in Aninal Crossing "insulted" her daughter (you can teach words to the character and when they visit other towns they learn that word).

Then there was last year's debacle of child pornography been exchanged through Swapnote which caused the removal of it.

So..yeah, they just want to be careful.

This is on the Wii U as well If you have an under 18 account. So it's nothing new.

I know it sounds silly, but it happens. A friend of mine has a friend who's son was using his 3ds to search for "Sonic and Amy in bed" (which apparently exists). Despite the tears and tears from the all the laughter after hearing about it, it was still shocking to hear. We tend to not think like a child when we're grown. Who checks the browser history on their kid's handheld? Who would even think of it as a porn source, let alone a 12 year old boy?

The issue with a lock is that it sometimes locks too much and the parents get sick of entering the code and take it off. It's not Nintendo's fault if they do, but that won't stop them from suing. By paying thirty cents, you pretty much said I'm paying you to say I take full responsibility for everything my child does on this thing.

Yeah. Paypal and banks do hold verifications. Bestbuy has done like 10 holds for my destiny preorder.

Unless those places are being charged to do that, I don't see why Nintendo needs to keep the money.

Assuming there is no charge, or a charge that is less, a company getting a 500k-1 million+ profit on some arbritary lockout is not something I support. Shit adds up.

Considering the user base, it's probably not a bad idea. The whole $0.30 thing is a bit weird but I think it's just a way to verify payment method (i.e. the mark of an Adult™) that will work equally effective across all available payment options. There's a point to be made about the fact that the money could be refunded, but the effort expended to actually give a damn is worth more to me than $0.30.

Scary FUD post incoming but...

What if they are blocking more than porn? What if something like, say, Planned Parenthood's website is blocked?

They didn't say it was just "adult content"

It's probably one of the smallest charges you're allowed to make with a credit card.

Owning and using a credit card usually means you're 18+

This is just verification that you're 18+ or have the permission from someone who is 18+

What if you don't want a credit card or have poor credit?

They could have done a parentalcontrol thing for free, just set a password for adults...

Whats next?.. paying 1 dollar to unlock all keys?..

Urgh, mandatory censorship of the internet unless you join a list based on opaque criteria?

Vile.

Anyone who says this is a good idea will presumably support Google charging you 30 pence to get to The Pirate Bay in Chrome and registering your real details right?

(Because none of these filters block "just" porn).

They will.

Nintendo aren't going to indexing the internet themselves, they'll just buy in an existing blocklist. Such blocklists routinely block sites about technical details of the internet that could be helpful in proxy development, wikipedia pages, Reddit, charities dealing with sexual issues for teenagers and charities dealing with abuse. Always.

This whole idea is disgusting.

The world of Nintendo. I've long since stopped trying to understand the things they do. The company is just so strange to me anymore.

don't ask me for codes
How is this a good idea when you can easily put parental locks like every other device in existence? This is cheap of them.

I think it's because most parents don't bother to turn parental lock on.

Can't really have parental control on by default without setting a pin.

30 cents is nothing? If 50M 3DS systems do this, they make $15M in pure profit.

...if you disregard handling charges and administrative costs. And even then we will be talking about insignificant profit for a multi-billion dollar company.

This is a bit authoritarian. On the other hand, it's probably the only way to save Nintendo's reputation when another lazy parent doesn't use parental controls and passes the blame.

Either some of you guys are absolute cheapskates, or are just blowing up a non-issue for fun.

They will.

Just use your computer or smatphone then?

I didn't know Nintendo is the only gateway to the Internet now.

I can't believe there are people defending this, they are the same people that would blast Microsoft or Sony if they did the same thing.
