The Crew PC Beta Starts Monday July 21st

Yes it is, especially for "beginners"/starting out. There is no reason for the handling to be this bad for the sake of "later on down the road your car will be fine! LOLZ!" That is going to turn people off and not retain players.

Which reminds me, max vibration on the DS3 (since it's using the 360 vibration code I guess) is horrible I turned it to "lowest click above 'off'" and it's alright but not great. I think I'm going to turn vibration off since it seems they don't have a seperate PS3 code-base for it like some other vibration-enabled controller games of last-gen did.
In a game like this there should be little hints that tell beginning players to brake into turns. Better awareness of handling options would help too.

No idea why the vibration on the DS3 is so intense. I just got used to it

Edit: Found this in the Ubisoft forum

Protips for everyone struggling to control their car:

Step 0: Plug in a 360 controller and set the mode to Sport.
Step 1: See the Steering Speed Factor slider? Move it all the way to the right.
Step 2: Like Forza? Move Steering Linearity to two ticks from the lowest setting (left-most). Like NFS? Move Steering Linearity to two ticks from the highest setting (right-most).
Step 3: Leave Steering Sensitivity in the middle-ish. Just a tick or two up or down from center, based on preference.
Step 4: ????
Step 5: Profit

Enjoy having your car not handle like a brick in an ice rink.

Cheers,
Chem
Car handling is now pretty awesome. Give it a shot.

Is everyone enjoying this? Just got an email to jump in and not sure if I want to give it away or try it out.

While I have got used to the handling and don't find it as bad as I did, it still is pretty poor though.
So sad, except from that it really is a great game, already the best map I have ever played in and I probably only played like 30% of it!

That and the poor car list will kill this game sadly.

Also, 60 fps enabled is a MUST. Massive difference in game, so much smoother all round!
Didn't have stutter like others did, consistent 60 fps. Mix high/ ultra graphics but with FXAA as AA.

Can't believe how good the map is, just driven from Detroit to Las Vegas and have already seen and done so much and that is barely anything compared to the whole map.

Thanks to chemzero and shockdude for the recommendation on changing the steering settings, handling is actually pretty enjoyable now.

Shit game, don't buy. Here's 3 keys so 3 people can see that it is a bad game.

CWLU-CCFT-AUVH-CFCX

RAYH-DQ4J-DGQR-N8M9

3FAM-MC73-MQTA-CLX3

Seems like most people are enjoying it though, so I might be in the minority. Codes anyway.

The number of awesome driving roads in this game is astounding.
Yosemite in particular is a lot of fun. I recommend starting from San Francisco; you'll enter a tunnel, and once you get out the other side.

Need to try the 60 FPS unlock as well as the posted steering settings. Wonder how well they work with the DS4.

Are codes activated via "ADD A GAME..." in the lower left then "Activate a Product on Steam..."? Or is there a different mechanism for betas?

After my controller finally started working again and after changing the steering options as posted above the driving is much better. I also took the music volume off and played the Forza Horizon 2 soundtrack which made driving through the desert toward Las
Vegas feel amazing. I like how they have the city lights off in the distance with the stars in the night sky above. And here's the FH2 soundtrack I had playing in the back.

The handling is extremely divisive.
I use a DS3 andI've been driving the 370z with assists on, and for me the handling was decent at first and pretty good at higher levels. If you pump the brakes instead of using the handbrake you'll turn fine. I plan to play around with Sport handling later since I want to figure out how to properly drift.

The only thing that everyone agrees on is that the map is awesome. Once you figure out handling you'll have a great time.

even blipping the handbrake I can often pull off epic slides around sharp corners at speed. I was using the default which is very arcadey handling generally.

Ok this game is badass. First time in St. Louis, I cross the Poplar St. Bridge, and see the arch. I make my way further downtown, around the time a summer Cards game might be getting over, and fireworks start glittering the sky. That was an extremely cool moment for me, being from the St. Louis area and being a diehard Cardinals fan.

The handling sucked at first, but all I did was turn the sensitivity all the way up in the menu, and it's now pretty great for me. Xbox 360 controller here. Still could be a little tighter, but most of my issues are now solved with that one little fix.

Loving this game.

Edit: Just saw the steering settings recommended above. I'll try those to see if I like them better than what I figured out.

Edit: Holy crap, 60 fps. I was gonna be pumped about buying this for the PS4 so I wouldn't have to use uPlay for friends, but if PS4 is 30 fps and I can pump it up to 60 on PC, I see the clear winner here...

Got a few mates to play in my crew tonight, was a blast. Drive from Detroit to Las Vegas, some really nice driving roads in that snowy area and nice tunnels. Then messed about at the Las Vegas airport lol.

My mate played with sport handling and I played with hardcore. I found sport is more enjoyable with a pad and hardcore is nicer with the wheel.

Think I put 8 hours into it today and most of that time I was just exploring. The amount of environments is mind-boggling.

So what's the consensus now that we can run this at 60fps?

Well it does make the game feel A LOT better naturally, jsut feels and even looks so much smoother and has an effect on the gameplay ( less unresponsive controls) but the handling still is obviously the same.

I have changed the handling and made it slightly better, i will try that fix up a few posts too. Still bad compared to any other game ( reason I say game is because even open world games like GTA and mafia 2 have better car physics)

My issue really is the car list currently . Such a lacklustre list of cars. I understand each car has a lot of customisation but the car list is pretty terrible for a car only game. I would gladly take less car customisation for more cars. Hoping they offer a lot of free cars as DLC or something, I worry they will have a shit loads of car for sale after release as "DLC".

Also, that race with the dirt spec Nissan you do down the mountain and go past the air balloons, my god that area and race was incredible, so beautiful!

So what's the consensus now that we can run this at 60fps?

No amount of fps can change the handling, it's weird as fuuuk. This is going to be the single biggest criticism of the game.

Also changing to MSAA/TXAA makes the frames drop to 20 from 50 on FXAA.

Maybe I'm being hypercritical but I have it set to Ultra at 1080p and it looks like shit IMO.

Depends were you look.

Cities, especially small towns near the desert style area do indeed look like shit.

The forests and the red desert look pretty amazing though.

Got into the beta, kinda stupefied it has as much story focus as it does. I'm guessing for the big publishers like EA and Ubisoft that they do some stupid focus testing that says you absolutely have to have a story in these games, but they're more often than not among the worst to shoehorn one into, at least of those that aren't completely abstract.

Especially since this was touting its online features and stuff. Feels like it should be kept to the level of something like Forza Horizon at most (there's a few characters... and something about beating the champion) with character creatable avatars. But then I probably should expect Ubisoft games to feel eerily formulaic for their major AAA releases.

Controller settings are seemingly broken (defaults to an angled view which can only be fixed by holding the right stick in the opposite direction) and I'm not clear on how it expects me to clear the final checkpoint in the tutorial in only 15 seconds.

Yay.

Also, Troy Baker needs to work on the whole trying thing. His performance here sounds almost identical to Second Son and a lot of his other stuff.

It sorta reminds me of the kind of story they'd try in some PS2/Xbox games actually, and really didn't give off an immediate impression that this is the kind of game that absolutely had to be online only (well, for the beta it kind of makes sense, but that's a different story.) You can even pause in races, a mercy EA didn't allow for their optionally online racer!

Though the more I look back and think about it NFS Rivals felt like something rushed somewhat for console launch. Just felt kind of shallow, MP was half baked, and it was missing stuff typically in racers as far as I can recall like more extensive camera options and shift.

So, last night I tried to play with a friend. I don't know what happened, but I invited him, and suddenly I was taken for a menu screen saying that the game encountered a problem, the services were down, or something like that. Got out of that screen and got back to the game. For a few minutes, strangely, there were no one on the map. I was playing offline, for real. No players icons around my screen, just the way I wanted. It was... beautiful. (i-i) But then, after some time, all those icons popped back on my screen, and I was online again.

I couldn't manage to ply with my friend, so I gave up and went for a shower and dinner. After that I got back to the game, and then, my cousin called me to play with him, free roaming and such. It was the first time a played this game with someone elsa, and I have to say: it was a fun experience, but far from ideal. We live in the same city, me and my cousin, we have some decent internet connections, and yet, we suffered a lot with lag, specially on more dense areas. He was disapearing for me, I was disappearing for him, cars popping up from nowhere, teletransporting from one place to another, etc, etc, etc. All that because our PCs weren't just talking with each other, but because all the cars (traffic and other players) around the leader of the crew had to be reproduced the same way to the other player. This wouldn't be a problem if our computers, besides having to speak within each other, hadn't to speak with a server on the other side of the planet to transmit all that information.

I can't wait to see the metacritic scores of this game, because it will bomb hard, and yet, Ubisoft won't learn the lesson and drop this f*ckin' DRM. I feel sorry for the Ivory Tower guys, and I hope the bomb don't explode in their hands. =/

Its kinda sad how TDU2 and this are similar in the sense that they focused too much on the wrong things.

TDU2 focused too much on the social aspect, buying houses, casino's, hanging with friends and kinda ignored the handling.

The crew focused so much on the customisation, story and put the handling to the back seat...

For me this game really feels like a better version of test drive unlimited, I would like to try get a proper feel for a car of each class however since i'm still not sold on the handling just yet.

This is the kind of decisions made by men in suits that literally makes a game step down from being a classic to a forgettable experience.

Does anyone have any idea at what time the beta ends? I just got a code and wondering if it's worth the download.

When I played about an hour ago, I got a "server issue" warning when I started the game and I couldn't do any missions or challenges, but driving around worked fine and I also met other players on the road. That's kind of a bummer to be honest, doing missions and challenges solo should be possible even if their servers are down.

Played some more earlier and whilst I still like it, I've just been playing Forza Horizon and the handling in that is far superior.
Let's see how the handling turns out on the console beta...

It ends today, if I am not mistaken.

Thanks for the reply. Got to play the game for a bit. It sure does feel like a Ubisoft game with the never-ending challanges and side stuff. And that really exhausts you after a while. The handling feels very unresponsive and weighty for a racing game where you often need to make quick moves. Also I don't know if a story was really needed in this game since it looks like it won't be anything special. The best part of the game seems to be the huge open world.

Overall I'm not impressed with the game at all. Unless they make some big changes to the game before release, I'll skip this one in favor of Driveclub.
