I'm amazed by how many people prefer the earlier "Family Guy".

Why the long case?
Caught a few seconds of it from back when the animation was crap. The humor is so dull and awful. Not that the show has been gold, but it can be enjoyable occasionally. Despite that, I still see this floating around Facebook every week or so.

The humor was definitely more subdued and low key in the earlier seasons, but the Griffins were much more likeable characters. That's the main reason I enjoy those early seasons more. Well, that and less cutaways.

I just hate everyone on the family, specially Brian. I didn't care much for the earlier renditions, but I do like most of the episodes. Is a funny series.

Bane? Get them on board, I'll call it in.
Early Family Guy was a lot less "shock for the sake of shock" jokes and waaaay less forced left-wing messages (I know recent episodes toned down on those, but there was a period where it was really bad).

They also respected the characters (notably Meg)

In the early seasons they were actually likeable people and the episodes actually had coherent plotlines.

Not that it was ever high art but at least it ranged from tolerable to entertaining instead of aggressively bad.

I've built up a reflex where whenever I hear the Family Guy theme start I lunge for the remote and change the channel. Don't even think about it, it just happens.

Best Family Guy is probably season 3. I think the writing was at its best around then anyways. The new stuff is hit or miss and the old, old stuff(season 1) is a bit generic/dull.

Precancellation FG is some of the best TV comedy there is. Post cancellation it's just another dumb comedy. I stand by this statement before some douche comes in and says it was always a dumb comedy. No it used to be pretty smart at dumb comedy and now it's like New Simpsons era of dumb.

Early FG was decent, when it came back it was cruder but still decent. Now it's unwatchable crap (past 2-3 seasons). I don't think I have laughed or even snickered at FG once in the past 2 seasons. You're better off watching American Dad.

I prefer them tremendously, however the new ones aren't terrible. I actually like Brian a lot, I wouldn't really consider him a liberal douche though.

I have the exact opposite feeling. I felt like pre-cancellation Family Guy wasn't great, but it had some pretty funny moments in it. It was never heartwarming like Simpsons could be, but it could still be funny.

Nothing about Family Guy's return is funny. And I feel like Family Guy now thinks it's deeper than it actually is. That they're putting out messages like a South Park or a Simpsons. Where as the original seasons just felt like they were dumb and went with it.

I've found I don't particularly care for either. I watch old ones and it's like "shitty animation, not fully developed, but funny in it's way," and then I watch new ones and I'm just like lol. But in a bad way. How can such a stupid show seem to take itself too seriously?

It's like they took the South Park criticism to heart and it only made the show worse.

The characters were likable early on, that's the main problem I have with the show these days. Half the main characters haven't had any development since season 3, I'd really say that only Brian and Stewie have had any sort of development that wasn't completely stupid.
It's eerie. The path Brian's character took is almost the exact same one as Lisa Simpson.
While Lois, Chris and Meg took no path, they are background noise 95% of the episodes.

Animation had a few flaws but it gave it some character, the way it looks now is awful. Like the way old spongebob or 90s cartoon looked compared to how the way spongebob looks now, it is not for the better.

Seasons 1-3 of Family Guy are classics the humor is just right on point for me, no repetitive Bird is the word jokes or cuts to country singers.

+1 for season 1-3 being way better than what it is now. There are still some great new episodes (murder mystery), but I think FG's first 50 episode run is almost all gems.

Except Lisa is a likeable character that got proper stories showing her as the voice of reason and smarts. Brian just became a liberal douche pretending to be smart and deep, which was clearly intentional I'm just not sure why.

that's... not true.

I'm basically in the earlier Family Guy camp pretty firmly. Seasons 1-3 are the best. Everything else after that is a down hill slide into retardation. I think the show stopped being funny and interesting when Peter was made into a full on retard, instead of a lovable oaf. And Meg basically became the family meat bag, followed by Louis basically becoming a bitch full circle. Everything seems to revolve around Brian and Stewie from the looks of things these days.

The jokes were a lot more funny and relatable. Somewhere along the line after season 3 it kinda nose dived into toilet bowl humor. I figured it had a lot to do with Adult Swim and trying to reach a younger demographic.

Earlier Family Guy actually had some subtlety to it despite all the manatee gags. My favorite line is "my dad's a tailor, you jerk!" from the episode with the nudist neighbors.

I maintain that those first three seasons were classic. They were also way ahead of their time and hugely influential to modern sitcoms and animated shows.

I mean his arc seems realistic I guess and he is the only person with an arc (which despite being a douche makes him somewhat relatable). No one else really has an arc and as a result they just feel like empty gags..

I don't know anything about the most recent Simpsons episodes but Lisa had (just off the top of my head in no order):
-Lisa and the Substitute Teacher (Sean Penn) episode
-Lisa and the Jazz Saxophone player episodes.
-The episode with Lisa meeting up with Paul McCartney.
-The episode where Homer gets the crayon taken out of his brain and becomes smart bonding with Lisa.

Pre-Cancellation: I liked it quite a bit.

Post-Cancellation (Pre-HD): Eh...hit-and-miss depending on episodes. A lot of them were pretty good, but I also feel it gets worse the further you get into it.

I more or less stopped watching once it went HD though.
Felt like it got a lot stupider.

I feel like Stewie has somewhat of an arc. His motives, opinions, general philosophy, and relationships change over the course of the show.

True Stewie feels like he has an arc as well and that's probably why they focus on those two for most episodes now.

Is that the one where she tries to force everyone to be a vegetarian? She's hardly the voice of reason in the show, and has had plenty of her own "liberal-douchebag" moments. In the older episodes Marge was usually the voice of reason, until they decided she wasn't exciting enough.

It was never a good show.

(In my opinion - just to explicitly state that so we don't get sidetracked by that)

Brian had that as well in the beginning. And like Lisa, he eventually became an annoying liberal douche with an inflated ego and easily threatened self-esteem. The main difference between the two is that Lisa is actually smart where Brian is mainly just pretending, like you said.

Yes, but she learned in the end, the episode was primarily a Homer-Lisa bonding episode the vegetarian thing was just the excuse to explore the relationship.

I liked the show before it got cancelled. But I was a sophomore in high school, I think, at the time. Then after it was brought back, my tastes started changing. I've seen a few episodes from the first season since then, and I didn't find them as funny as I remembered. The show can still make me chuckle occasionally though.

True, but older Simpsons episodes in general had a story arc where the character learned a valuable lesson in the end. Especially in the first couple of seasons, it was a little corny and ham-fisted. But they really struck gold for the next few seasons. Family Guy is just kind of nihilistic.

Nevertheless, Lisa was the token liberal knowitall of the show, much like Brian has become.

American Dad has its own faults
char_51617.jpg

This is the worst, most overused character/gag in the entire series.

He doesn't show up too often anymore.

There was a period a couple seasons ago where he seemed to show up every episode, but luckily they cut down on him once his schtick was starting to get played out.
