I have a gut feeling that the optimization for this game on PC hardware will be nowhere near acceptable for some reason. I hope i'm wrong, though. If it turns out that this game runs well at release on decents PC's, i'll gladly sink 40 dollars into it. Otherwise, i'll wait for the inevitable price drop to <$10.

Capcom's been doing fairly well on PC optimization for a while now. Certainly the best Japanese publisher wise.

Then why the 30fps cap in the first place ? That makes no sense.

The game wasn't tested at 60fps until people began asking about it. Capcom's just covering its arse in case that 60fps breaks something in the game (e.g. there's a certain jumping point in Dark Souls that requires 30fps to pass, but otherwise the game runs perfectly fine at 60fps).

The Last of Us on PS4 also has a 30fps cap option. It's not a big deal.

IIRC didn't it also up the graphic fidelity on The Last of Us when you capped it to 30fps? It made sense in that context, otherwise you would have an unstable 30-60fps.

This is a bit different. They've been acting like 30fps will be the default setting. They've also made claims that the game is "meant to be played" at 30fps or else it will break, which has gone on to be dis-proven.

I'm not really big into the 30fps vs 60fps debate, but in this instance the entire situation is just..weird.

Maybe I'm confusing but I thought the DR3 30fps cap wasn't an option. It is forced and 60fps requires a modification of some sort.

I see. I guess we can give props to Capcom for being open about all this.

I guess we should look forward to an immensely CPU bound game. Drops to 30s are absolutely guaranteed no matter how fast CPUs have become.

I hope I'm wrong but 60fps in CPU bound scenarios is not going to be a reality in new games.

I guess since the game was originally developed for 30fps target, they do not want to commit to full QA and support for 60 ? But as long as it works (which it does), who cares.
Maybe there will be drops, maybe not. In any case, CPU-boundness should be a thing of the past once the industry switches to Mantle + DX12. Too bad this game is still DX11.

damn, 25gb.

Wolfenstein was like 50GB or something crazy like that.

Thank god for having a 1TB drive and unlimited fiber optic net.

Alright then. I don't mind 30fps on consoles but on PC my sweet spot is 45-50. 30 just feels too sluggish on PC.

That is, if Microsoft don't screw up and make DX12 W9 exclusive.

Just had a look on steam and it's £36 wtf. What happened to cheaper PC games. I can also see other games prices have gone up.

Gonna wait before picking this up.

Yeah it makes sense to spend 460 dollars on inferior version instead of 20 dollars on superior one. Decisions, decisions...

I was just wondering if it was really that inferior.

Not getting an XB1 especially for DR3 but if I'm picking up one anyway might actually play some games on it instead of collecting dust from day one waiting for the rest of the exclusives.

Hah, as much as I wouldn't put it past MS, I don't think they will be quite that stupid. The backlash even from developers would be huge.
That said, personally I would not even mind that getting Win9 that much, as long as it is good proper follow-up to Win7.
SteamOS would be even nicer if Valve ever gets it into fully usable state though.

Well it does not get much more inferior than 720p at barely 30fps without mod support, frankly. Unless your PC is 10 years old or something.

Douchebag. Yes, me.

Sorry to derail, but what part of DS1 are you talking about? I'm currently playing through and about halfway through using DSFix...

I'm so tempted to go ahead and preorder now, but considering it's only a $5 difference between preorder and full price (which it'll likely return to upon release), I think I'll just wait until it comes out and judge whether or not the port is good.

You have a lot of faith in the PC port, it seems.

Not really, just experience. Capcom has released fantastic PC versions of their games since first Lost Planet, PC versions were consistently the best versions.
Plus on steam forums it is pretty well documented that DR3 continues that trend.

I'm guessing the main code timestep is set to 1/30 so everything including physics middleware setting stuck to that. A lot simpler to code for in fixed hardware like X1 and great for multiplayer because everything is consistent and predictable. So now if you decouple the framerate from the physics, occasional funny glitches may happen.

Are developers even using high amounts of space (GBs) for the actual game or are we getting disc like structures, optimized for drive-read speeds via duplicated data, as digital download?

From what I've seen of most console games of recent times it sure as hell doesn't look like it's textures that take up all the space, but maybe it is and the games just don't show it? Or is it audio that is filling up those discs?
The new consoles don't play games off of the disc, so it has nothing to do with that. I'm sure some of it has to do with less compressed audio, but the texture resolution jump is likely the main reason.

Why are people so surprised by the game being 30GB? ~30GB has been the new average size for nearly a year now.

Devs uploaded a few weeks ago 60 fps gameplays that looked fantastic and were very smooth.

I hope the game plays just fine at 60fps without bugs, this kind of game hugely benefits from the smoothness of 60fps.

Of course there will be severe framedrops when a lot of zombies start showing on screen.

I'm not sure exactly as I haven't played the game myself, but I've seen it mentioned quite a few times. It's entirely possible that the issue has since been fixed.

Ask a Russian to get you the game for like $20-25. That's how I got it.

Wondering if I should put this on my SSD or normal HDD.

Thoughts?

Well we can't say anything without having experience with the game itself. SSDs make a pretty big difference in asset streaming and loading times, it's totally possible DR3 benefits from that. I know my Neutron GTX has made my RAGE/Thief experience much better, super fast loading times (and God knows there are many) and no textures streaming issues whatsoever.

Why wouldn't this be 30GB?

y'all should probably get used to it if you plan on playing multiplatform games this gen

You know, that doesn't sound reasonable to me at all.
They're porting a game but can't be arsed testing it properly...

Sounds like I can't be arsed buying it till it's in a humble bundle

I must be doing something wrong. I have 9 Winter Offensive keys and it's saying "Items in your backpack cannot satisfy the wish list specified. "

The defindex number of the keys he's asked for probably doesn't match one or more of those you've bought from the market. This issue comes up from time to time and it's something the Dispenser folks have left unchecked. Send him a trade offer instead and mention in the note section that you couldn't buy the game from his shop.

I'm.....so very confused. Steam trading has always gone over my head a bit. Could anyone explain how this would save some cash compared to the frankly overpriced UK RRP.

I'll start off by saying that you may be better off buying 10 TF2 keys instead as this should avoid the issue that Haeleos has run into (this is technically a more expensive approach but only by roughly 50c). To answer your question: 10 TF2 keys at USD$2.47 each (the UK price may be slightly different) = $24.70 = £15.

How are people surprised at the size of games? This is quite normal now, 25GB isn't even that big - there were many older games that were that size and bigger.
