Playstation France tweets: Minecraft PS4 digital release is coming tomorrow

So it costs $5 to "upgrade" from the PS3 to the PS4, otherwise it's a flat $20 price for newcomers on the PS4. That being said, what's the best way to approach this as someone who doesn't already own MineCraft on PS3?

As far as I can tell, buying it for $20 on the PS3 and then upgrading to the PS4 for $5 is the most logical thing to do, seeing as you get all three versions (eventually, whenever the Vita edition launches) for a set price-- otherwise, you'd be spending $40 if you eventually wanted to have it on all Sony platforms and bought it on PS4 first. Barring people hoping for sales/PS+ inclusion (incredibly unlikely), it doesn't get better than this.

It just seems odd that they'd make the PS4 version stand alone with this whole deal-- it isn't compatible with the Vita version, it isn't cross-buy, saves only work one way, etc. I realize it isn't Sony's concern in that this isn't adhering to the typical cross-buy initiative, but I think there are going to be a number of angry people milling about comments sections when they realize their purchase isn't cross-buy like they're used to with titles like this.

It's odd, indeed. They should have made the PS4 version Cross-buy, without cross-play. But I guess they really wanted to get at least $5 from everyone. Which is fair..

The only logical response to this.

y'all should be ashamed
Eh I probably wouldn't buy minecraft unless I was excited to build stuff. There is a ton of multiplayer-esque stuff that's crazy popular although I'm thinking about the PC elements and not sure what there is on consoles.

There is a story that you can complete with a final boss and such though

Yes, if you want an adventure. You can work your way to fighting the enderdragon and I believe next update we are getting the Wither boss. Fun fun fun.

After you beat the enderdragon though there isn't much to do besides build.
Awesome, thanks y'all.

I'm guessing there's no way to get the upgrade deal or free vita version if you buy the physical PS3 version right?

It's because of the map size is larger on on the PS4 than the PS3 and PS Vita versions. Can't transfers files from the PS4 as a result. 4J is still trying to figure out how to increase the map size when transferring from PS3 to PS4.

Oh, I completely understand the technical limitations behind it, and I'm not particularly fussed about the lack of cross-buy or anything like that. I'm just questioning the way it's being handled from a PR standpoint, because it seems as if quite a lot of people are confused about how their purchase is going to be handled and it isn't even out yet.

Unless the PSN page for the game is incredibly descriptive and blatantly says how your purchase is going to be handled (i.e. big red letters flashing PS4 only and not hidden somewhere halfway down the page where excited buyers won't bother to scroll down and look on the way to checkout), I just think some people are going to be pretty vocally upset (PS Blog being PS Blog) and it could have been easily avoided.

They really shouldn't have teased the hell out of it like they did -- only to delay it.

Exactly. Just release it when it's ready and let it be a nice surprise for folks anticipating it-- not constantly say "it's on it's way! It's almost out!" endlessly despite people being legitimately pissed about it being teased.

Just hopped into this thread but could someone just clarify something for me?

I was always under the impression that if I bought Minecraft on PS3, whether it be physical or digital, that I could get the PS4 version as well for $5.

Am I now to believe I am not entitled to that because I bought a physical copy?

You are to believe that.

It seems to be, man. :(

Was physical cheaper? Otherwise why not go digital anyways?

Not being a dick, just curious.

Well damn, I no doubt purchased it under that false assumption.
I could have sworn it was stated that all buyers would be eligible.

Well, that really sucks.

Sucks for you mate but to be fair, I can't remember the last time a physical copy entitled to digital crossbuy.

Edit: maybe one of the bad Ratchet games did something like "play it while online before X date and you'll be entitled to game Y" (Gladiator IIRC)

They said they were looking into it as a possibility, but weren't sure if it was possible and needed to figure out all the details. I don't remember when they said it. It was months ago when they announced the pricing and such.

I enjoy actually owning what I purchase.

With digital you have no real rights to the property you purchase. No selling, no trading, no lending to friends, shit out luck if it gets removed from the store, etc... and on top of all that you get charged the same price.

What makes it worse it that I got Watchdogs when it first came out. I ended up not really liking it and resold it for $50, so at most I lost out on $10.

If I bought it digital I would be out $60 and not a damn thing I could do about it. I can't bring myself to just throw money away like that on a gamble.

They can just do a timed deal though, like for the first week or so.

Maybe even drop a patch that gives the option from the games main menu. Not sure if they could do something like that and make it function as a 1-time thing.

How did Sony do it with the Vita version of PSASBR when you bought a retail PS3 copy? Wasn't a 1 and done thing or did they give you a code?

AFAIK, they always said that retail crossbuy was a firm "maybe".

Yeah, that's why I acknowledged that it was an assumption on my part.

It's not the end of the world by any means, but I am just a bit bothered since I would now need to buy it again.

I would have just waited if I knew it was a definite "no".

For similar reasons, anyone who’s previously bought Playstation 3 Edition will be able to upgrade to Playstation 4 Edition for a small fee. This applies to everyone who’s bought Minecraft digitally and transfers their PSN account to their new console. Our intention is to make this work for the disc version of Minecraft too, but it’s proving a bit trickier to set up. We’ll post more info on this as soon as possible.

They never provided an update.

I dunno why it would be difficult for them to implement it. Ubi and EA had $10 digital upgrades at the launch of the PS4, you just had to use the PS3 disc.

FFXIV had it similar too, but of course the key was logged to your account

You also needed an in the box redeemable code.

True, it did. But I see it as an unnecessary measure if the PS3 disc is always needed for authentication. It isn't like you can pass the disc around to your friends so they can all get $5 versions of Minecraft.

I mean, how difficult can it be to put up a separate $5 version of PS4 mine craft that only works with the PS3 disc? The only issue I see is confusing the consumer with two different options in the web store.

So, I just purchased the PS3 version, then went to buy the PS4 version, the PS4 version is currently showing as free. Which is odd seeing as I was expecting to have to pay for the upgrade?

edit:
Yup, went through as free and is downloading now, weird.
