Vita version still mentioned, other platforms confirmed to still be in development. Pretty...awkward, really, but the best that could be hoped for in the event of a sale.

I wonder if Sony will be bothered that Minecraft is a Microsoft published game...or this could be a bridge that leads to a more close relationship between the console makers.

Well, guess it's official now, but we already knew it. Will be interesting to see what Microsoft is going to do exactly with Minecraft, because I really have no idea what the plan is going to be.

By the way it is also confirmed that the founders are leaving.

The founders: Notch, Carl, and Jakob are leaving. We don’t know what they’re planning. It won’t be Minecraft-related but it will probably be cool.

Pretty sure the support of the Playstation versions is purely because of past contracts signed between Mojang and them. Minecraft 2 or any future stuff, do not expect any support on those systems at all.

I guess Minecraft 2 is the logical assumption, but it's hard to even imagine what that would be.

It will still be available.

Read carefully and they said nothing about future on going support.

At Microsoft, we believe in the power of content to unite people. Minecraft adds diversity to our game portfolio and helps us reach new gamers across multiple platforms. Gaming is the top activity across devices and we see great potential to continue to grow the Minecraft community and nurture the franchise. That is why we plan to continue to make Minecraft available across platforms – including iOS, Android and PlayStation, in addition to Xbox and PC.
That doesn't sounds to me like a drop support in future games..

I wonder if this has anything to do with Project Spark. Obviously there is still some money in Mojang, which was the main reason, but maybe they want a hold on sandbox games or something.

Vita version still coming? Microsoft is giving the handheld more support than Sony.

Thanks for making my morning. I needed that laugh.

I'm actually quite
pleasantly
surprised they plan to continue to support all platforms. The inevitable Minecraft 2 mind you...

The Minecraft team’s unique vision, creative energy and innovative mindset make them a perfect fit alongside our other global studios. Microsoft Studios includes 343 Industries, Turn 10 Studios, and Lionhead Studios just to name a few.

No mention of Rare?

Crikey. Glad to see them keeping it around on every platform. They'll make serious bank that way.

It's interesting though. Sony likely wouldn't want a Microsoft published game on PS platforms, but Minecraft is big enough that maybe they'd have no choice but to keep it up there. They'll make money too, I suppose.

All the founders are leaving? Well that's that.

Microsoft is going to ride Minecraft (first game) until the wave dies out, then the franchise will be worthless.

Looking forward to Notch's next game more than Minecraft 2.0 or whatever they end up calling the next iteration of it.

I don't think they are going to continue to patch minecraft with features forever, no way in hell is MS buying Mojang for 2.5B only to continue supporting the games people already purchased for many years. No, they are goign to expedite the release of the next game and support only that, which is perfectly fine... just hope it's good and on more than just MS owned platforms.

Doubt it. Skype, which is Microsoft owned, is on Vita. Plus Microsoft allowed some of their IPs to get DS games (including a cancelled Halo DS game) and I doubt Nintendo were bothered about getting Microsoft IPs on DS.

It wasn't a secret any more, but still an interesting (and huge) move. Congrats to Phil Spencer, now we'll see how it evolves from now. But whatever the outcome, it's a big event.

What about the other editions of Minecraft? Will they stop being developed?

There’s no reason for the development, sales, and support of the PC/Mac, Xbox 360, Xbox One, PS3, PS4, Vita, iOS, and Android versions of Minecraft to stop. Of course, Microsoft can’t make decisions for other companies or predict the choices that they might make in the future.

Uh

I can think of a few reasons why development and support of non MS platforms might stop.

I can't imagine Microsoft will interfere too much with what Mojang does until they start a new project or if they have something in the works.
