Microsoft announces purchase of Minecraft creator Mojang

Just like Office, OneDrive, OneNote MS will want this on as many platforms as possible.

The question remains though, will Sony and Nintendo allow it to be on their system. Will they allow a big Microsoft splash screen to appear on their consoles.

This truly brings up a very interesting situation.

Someone needs to alter the Bandares gif to show the MS logo pop up when they turn the PS4 on, then the Minecraft logo....

That's what it is going to look like...

The success or failure of this deal depends on what MS does with it. I don't see it helping their phones or tablets at all and I don't really trust MS to do a MC2 right. The biggest thing I could see them doing with this is a cartoon or movie(And I have no idea what they could do that would actually be fun to watch in that time frame), but that's not exactly a guaranteed success either.

Exactly. They'll make back there 2.5B in no time. That's chump change to these guys.

I think you're overestimating how much money Minecraft makes. It will probably take them a while to just break even on this deal.

I wonder if it's a US thing though... I have several nephews/nieces in that age bracket and I never heard them mention Minecraft (granted I don't speak to them that often).
But the way the situation has been described to me, yeah controlling a major popular IP among youngsters has a lot of potential. When they're old enough to choose their first phone, it can help to sell them one attached to the Minecraft IP.

The only thing my little sister ever does when she has friends over is play Minecraft on the 360 with them. So its pretty huge.

Unless microsoft starts putting targeted advertising in the game, I see no reason why not.

Great move. Minecraft is in the best possible hands now. Dont really agree with them continuing to support the competing platforms, but theres zero chance that Minecraft 2 will continue to do so. MS should attempt to purchase some more developers maybe a bunch of Japanese ones as they are cheap and would likely catapult the xbone above the PS4 in both Japan and Europe where Japanese games are more appreciated than in the US.

My parody detector seems to be broken again.

The current version of the game has lots of content and provides a whole lot "game time" for those who want to be creative or explore. I don't see them needed to update it with whatever patch Microsoft throws out later with their splash screen.

I'm now really worried for the future of the current Minecraft. When it was Mojang on its own behind the game, they had every reason to continue adding to it and growing it as one long-supported game.

I don't know that Microsoft sees things the same way. I want to see what the current Minecraft grows into year from now - not what we get from Minecraft 2.

Again, MS didn't buy this for the Xbone.

This is a very unique opportunity... and one that doesn't come around often.

It's a cross-over IP that transcends platforms. Notch went to MS, not MS to Notch.

You don't spend 2.5b to make a MS exclusive studio. You spend 2.5b to expand the franchise.

All this talk of contracting is just absurd.

True!!

Props to MS for strengthening their 1st party, I would have bought a developer who shown the ability to make more than one successful game; but there is successful and than there is minecraft successful.

Hold on, friend! I'd love to share with you some swell news about the Windows 8 Metro UI! Wait, where are you going?
My thoughts after digesting this for a few hours:

  • I think this is a colossal waste of money for Microsoft to spend on one IP. They could have funded or created many more for many years with that money.
  • Microsoft's history with studio acquisitions has been horrible and I have almost zero faith that they won't fuck this up.
  • I feel sorry that the pressures of single-handedly creating one of the biggest hits in gaming got to Notch, and I do hope he gets better, but it's hard for me to really sympathize for someone who instantly became $2B+ richer.

That's really not how it works. It isn't like MS only had 2.5 billion to spend and this is what they decided to do with it to the exclusion of everything else. These decisions are made on a case by case basis. MS feels they will make back their investment and more with this IP, plus the circumstances meant that they were using money that was just sitting off shore doing nothing for them and would have had tax implications if they brought it back into the US.

This doesn't prevent them from spending another 2 billion on new IPs if they think they will make that back that money.

Yeah you have loads of people in here saying this deal is bad when objectively 2.5B is chump change to MS (even more insignificant if they used the offshore money that they can't bring back home) and all the salty concern posts about Rare and I'm the fanboy.

I'm calling it like it is. This is a great acquisition. People clamor for Mario and Nintendo on other consoles; MS today has purchased the IP that is greater than all of that for kids.

It's admirable that Sony tries to build their own in-house studios, but we've seen that buying studios is just as if not more effective. For all of Sony's hard work they've basically only got two amazingly profitable studios, ND and Polyphony - three maybe if you count SSM. MS bought Bungie and the Halo IP and that has had more success than any one of those 3. Without that purchase the 360 and xbone likely wouldn't even exist today.

It's good for MS, based on past events- it's bad for everyone else. I wouldn't want playstation owning it either.

They'll just bundle it as a "stability update"

Exactly, this game would have been much better suited to be in EA or Activisions hands, well Ubisoft at least.. I'm not sure about those other two, lol.

This patch will be done in the next couple days tops..... No way they are not going to pass up on the opportunity to stake their claim immediately...

I see lots of assumptions about what they actually paid for. "One IP", "One Game" etc.

Not a single person in this thread knows what they paid for. Minecraft 2 could be half finished. Scrolls could be. Another game entirely could be in the works.

For them to pay such a huge amount of money, they know they are going to get something out of it, likely lots of somethings. Let's see how it plays out before lambasting them for buying "just a single game", because they didn't. They bought the entire company.

So, basically, from now on, Minecraft will be a Microsoft published game on PlayStation consoles too, it seems.

It is the trojan horse!

I'm really happy to hear this. It seems that they can make a lot more money keeping Minecraft on everything rather than making it a pc/xbox exclusive.

In case anyone wanted some figures to start with so we can piece together some trends..

Interesting. A free Minecraft might just make them back 2 billion in one year looking at Candy Crush. Nice move in that context.

And that's all I've been saying - that this is great for MS. I'm not saying it wouldn't be bad for PS only people. If MC2 comes out and excludes Playstation, of course it would be bad, especially for kids that only have access to a Playstation. At the same time, nothing's stopping them from trading in the PS4 for an Xbone and if MS does make the next MC exclusive, that's exactly what they'll be hoping for.

Also this strategy for MS, in my opinion is a winning one. Of course Mojang isn't being bought solely because of the Xbox, but if MS carries on this strategy of buying more game devs, I feel like this is how they will compete and turn the Xbox around. It's too late for MS to develop devs in-house as you wouldn't see the fruits of the labor until near the time the Xbox Two comes out. Sony has those solidly in place already. What MS has that Sony doesn't is money and lots of it. They can accelerate the 1st party studio support simply by buying a bunch of established developers and probably for less than they paid for Mojang. With all of the offshore money, foreign devs from Europe and Japan would be good targets as they'd get far more value spending it than bringing it back and storing it in the coffers where it'll be destroyed by taxes.

Minecraft software sales are a drop in the bucket for MS. Pulling the game from other platforms at this point would cause outrage and damage MS reputation for millions of people. That's why they they are keeping it available on competing platforms. But future releases are very much up in the air at this point.

People need to remember that Minecraft has become so much more than just a game, with all the merchandise now out there. I've no doubt the expansion of the property beyond it's virtual form played a big part in the purchasing decision too. But whatever way you look at it, Microsoft now has one phenomenally huge IP in their first party roster that they didn't have previously.

So, Microsoft is essentially paying $2.5b for Minecraft 2 ... and Mojang's founders are leaving.

This seems like a great example of buying a company at the absolute top of their value trajectory.

Very curious to see how they proceed. I wonder if they're going to build out the Mojang office or team them up with another studio.

Here's hoping Microsoft doesn't mess it up.

I find it sad that some gamers here cant see past their own nose.

Whether Minecraft 2 finds its way on Playstation platforms or not, this purchase has nothing to do with Xbox and the Xbox one will only marginally benefit from it.

It's likely that this is has to do with Xbox becoming less about just a console in the living room and more broadly defined as games across many screens, putting the cloud to further use and growing Xbox subscriptions.

Anyone who thought that MS would buy this and just drop minecraft support on non MS platforms was insane. MS will probably get this on Nintendo finally.

That would actually be...awesome. Microsoft to save both the Vita and the Wii-U, LOL.

The "this has nothing to do with Xbox" people amuse me. Sure, it's not only about Xbox. But look at the link this story comes from. Look at the guy who made the deal happen. Look at the guy who made a video announcement, who references the 360 version and specifically mentions Xbox at the end of the video. Just so happens he is in charge of Xbox. I mean come on.

Why are you reading my tag instead of the title of my post?
My biggest worry is if C418 is gonna get replaced as Minecrafts composer. I don't particularly enjoy the second set of Minecraft songs that much but he's still the guy responsible for my favorite ambient soundtrack ever.

Can't wait to see Minecraft toys, school accessories, drinks, foods, etc ads on my TV.

The toys situation is out of hand already.

Flat pack carboard kits, plushy toys, 4 inch figures etc etc. I wonder what the revenue from the licensing deals is compared to the game itself....

I still don't understand the reasoning for this deal from Microsoft side. Unless it's about tax evasion or something.

In which case I don't think Sweden is the place to go for lower taxes.

It is about offshoring for sure, but it's also probably a power move for mobile.

Don't be surprised if we get some DLC for Minecraft, and once MS feels they've recouped a significant enough portion of the $2.5B (could be 10%, could be 0%, who knows?), something crazy like Windows-phone exclusive content, or Windows-phone-exclusive Minecraft 2.

Even ignoring any coupling with Windows Phone, Microsoft could try a huge push for Minecraft in China/South Korea (I think the vast majority of the current minecraft base is in Europe and NA). And again, they could try to leverage it for Windows Phone in Asia.

If MS had any sense they will ship every new Xbox One with minecraft pre-installed for free.

They will make it back on micro transactions and boosted console sales.

I always thought it was corny and would feel out of place absolutely anywhere else, but it made minecraft feel like minecraft.
