Microsoft announces purchase of Minecraft creator Mojang

What about the other editions of Minecraft? Will they stop being developed?
There’s no reason for the development, sales, and support of the PC/Mac, Xbox 360, Xbox One, PS3, PS4, Vita, iOS, and Android versions of Minecraft to stop. Of course, Microsoft can’t make decisions for other companies or predict the choices that they might make in the future.

Why would anyone choose not to have Minecraft on their platform? Sounds sinister.

Brutal. Simply brutal.

2.5 billions for a studio that made nothing (Minecraft was made by Notch basically)... Sure, it's also for the name Minecraft and the entire community... But Microsoft at it again. Buying one thing for 2.5 billion instead of creating a dozen other things with that money.

I'm sorry, I can't get behind this. Congrats to Notch though. You swell bastard !

You think Sony would refuse to publish it and risk pissing off their customer base just because it's published by MS?

They won't refuse to have it on their console, but if Microsoft puts out a patch that has the Xbox logo on the game's menu icon, then I don't think Sony would let that pass, thus not allowing future updates.

Definitely. He'll really regret this day when he sees his baby being whored out by corporate entities when he could have easily made millions with hands off leadership.

Billions>>>>>>millions

I don't think he'll give a second thought to Minecraft after this.

Serious question as I have no idea... how much would EA, Ubi or Activision be worth if someone were to attempt to buy them out?
I don't know, I know I would love for MS to purchase any of them and keep their shit exclusive to their platform. Worst case scenario MS buys Take Two (aside from from the real worst case in which they buy Sony or Nintendo).

I would be fine with Sony buying Capcom, maybe they could save RE.

Sony not going to let Microsoft on their platform. I expect a big mess.

Of course the decision is up to them but why not? If it is something to do with requirement of an MS account or something, that would be a perfectly valid reason not to let them on the platform and its closed nature. Other than that sort of thing, there is no reason not to.

Am I missing something? Minecraft is the result of a good idea by one guy. I think it's unlikely he'll be able to repeat that success (does he even work there anymore?) and it certainly doesn't mean the developer is worth 2.5billions. Rare had a much more impressive track record and were purchased for 350 million. I realize that was 12 years ago but still. I have a hard time seeing how MS thought the developer was worth that much (Mojang I mean).

To me, it feels like money wasting. I mean, even as Microsoft's view, there were so much better opportunities. They could've even afford Capcom for that price I think.

Frankly I'd have liked him saying: I couldn't refuse the money, nobody would. I'd respect him 100% more, I'm sure lots of other people would too.

What's with this ridiculous idea?

Why would MS even do that?

It wont have an Xbox logo... I can see it say Microsoft Studios though.

Hey, MS, replace your shitty avatars with Minecraft Steves instead, then this wasn't a money waste of Rare style proportions

There's a few clones of Minecraft on the XBLIG section that use your Avatars. (Almost all of the clones) That should be an immediate fix for the official one.

Next E3: "We are proud to announce Minecraft 2, with updates coming first to Xbox One."

It's a dead franchise if something like that happens.

Microsoft allowed football games with Playstation ads on it, on 360.

Because having Microsoft publish on you platform is something Sony might not like.
Expect Sony to try and ignore Minecraft as much as possible and hide it away in a corner.

I wonder how the Infiniminer guys feel about this.

Close, but no $2.5 billion dollar cigar.

Hahaha, right? The real difference between minecraft and all the other games it copied was that notch marketed his game hard in the beginning. He ain't shit for a game designer, but notch knew how to sell and get the momentum going.

Probably around $10-$15 billion

And you lose a lot of value buying publishers because of limiting revenue streams, redundancies... so it's usually not worth it as a platform maker

That seems about right for Acti, but pricey for EA and Ubi. I know Assassins Creed and Madden sell, but they don't sell like COD and Blizzard games (and maybe Destiny now?) sell

No, I want it the other way round.

Minecraft Steve has an interesting aesthetic that official Avatars do not.

Notch played this thing so perfectly, making so much from all these sales and now selling at its peak. Well played.

bish gets all the credit :)
Sounds like the want to continue having Minecraft on all plattforms.
No Xbox exclusive stuff?

Oh, I'm sure it's coming. They would be stupid not to use MC to push their own console. The quote reads like another of Phil's "agrees with everything" tweets.

I don't understand how they could bought it at that price. I mean sure, Minecraft is a success But the company has literally nothing else worth it.

I don't see how this makes sense from a business point of view But oh well, what do I know.

That's why they're buying the IP, not the devs ; well they do get the devs in the bargain, but they don't really need them that much : I think they could find hundreds of developers of their own to do what Mojang was currently doing with Minecraft, and like many others said, there's no guarantee Mojang could have hit gold with a new game as successful as Minecraft.

dofry

That's "Dr." dofry to you.
Great deal by MS. Spend the cash, spend it wisely.

Great deal by Notch. Spend the cash, spend it wisely.

Big get for MS

Damn, Phil Spencer has the Power, Two Point Five Billion Dollars,

Damn, Notch has the Power, Two Point Five Billion Dollars

Goodbye Minecraft.

Good buy Minecraft

Crazy but will be fascinating to see how it all plays out.

Crazy but will be fascinating to see how it all pays out.

Replacing MS with Notch almost works on any reply in this thread. That dude is now even more filthy rich than before. He should buy Sweden.

Rare's entire IP catalog was still a fraction of the success that Minecraft has become, and will continue to be.

You pretty much made my point, this is Rare 2.0 on a grander scale (possibly). There not going to recoup 2.5 Billion dollars on the original I.P. (not even remotely close) there going to want/need a sequel. There going to have to do that without the founder and possibly other developers jumping ship, I don't think a Mine craft 2 with tons of Micro transactions (this is M.S.) can strike gold again.

Sure, just like they didn't allow Atari or Sega to be on their platform. Heck, Nintendo not only allowed Sega on their platform but even made several games with both of their mascots on it.
