Microsoft announces purchase of Minecraft creator Mojang

I don't expect things to stay the same after Vita.

We could get time-exclusived items to start.

Aren't there already umpteen billion premium skin packs on 360? MS probably sees more money from that than normal sales, the plan is probably to keep getting in on dat money while keeping the game basically the same.

What does this line mean? After mentioning it's staying on all platforms.

I guess they mean, theoretically, if they were idiots, a platform could refuse to publish Minecraft, but that won't happen.

seems like a sensible purchase for such a cash rich company.

crazy success for the founders. hope they do cool things with the cash and don't just buy a huge yacht. though of course it's their money :)

Good.

If we still get Vita version and all this means is that MS spent 2.5B$ on Minecraft instead of cockblocking some multiplats or purchasing publishers/studios I actually care about I'm pretty happy with it.

Hopefully we are safe for the time being from MS warchest.

Notch should be arrested for robbing MS.

The founders: Notch, Carl, and Jakob are leaving. We don’t know what they’re planning. It won’t be Minecraft-related but it will probably be cool.

This is pretty important point I feel.

Dunno how I feel about this. Hopefully their attitude means continued support for all non-xbox platforms.

I guess good job to Notch for making 2.5 billion.

Microsoft is going to let Minecraft stay on other platforms? That's nice of them.

WHAT DID YOU DO WITH THE REAL MICROSOFT!

Well, this certainly happened. A 2.5 billion gamble on mobile. And like I said earlier in the previous thread, whether it pays off is all gonna come down to one sentence:

"But my phone plays Minecraft already."

No mention of Rare?
I dont think they want to invite the comparison.

What a dumb purchase.

It'll be interesting to watch how Microsoft changes the free nature of online play for that game.

I there I was thinking Notch is not a hippo-crate, but he clearly is with him dropping support for Oculus Rift when acquired by Facebook.

Does this mean Vita Minecraft bundle no longer possible? I was hoping that could have maybe
not likely
done something to help the poor little guy. :(

I know it's still coming out on the system, I just don't know whether they'll allow specials and bundles.

While I thinks it's a smart move of Microsoft to continue support for all platforms, seeing they get the most money out of this that way, (and I can get Vita version! :D)
I can't help but wonder what Microsoft will get out of this... I suppose just more money in the long term? I guess this isn't a move to increase the appeal of Xbox/MS Platforms, though I think I can see them doing something special for Xbox versions...even if it's only releasing xbox versions first. I hope this move means the console versions get closer to the PC version anyway in terms of updates.

The Minecraft team’s unique vision, creative energy and innovative mindset make them a perfect fit alongside our other global studios.

The founders: Notch, Carl, and Jakob are leaving. We don’t know what they’re planning. It won’t be Minecraft-related but it will probably be cool.

So they pretty much can't ( don't even know ? ) say anything really definitive on the subject which matter about what it really mean for the community side of minecraft, modding, api developement, videos, etc..

Guess it was sold without even caring about it.

Satya Nadella must have called Phil Spencer in and gone

Nadella: "Ok, I don't understand any of this god damn games thing and it doesn't fit my PRODUCTIVITY PRODUCTIVITY PRODUCTIVITY schtick, but god damn people just want to play games and shit on computers and phones and not scan and store recipes or whatever I thought they'd rather do. This Xbox One nonsense isn't doing well at all because of the morons that were in charge before you. We need to fix this shit. What the fuck do we do to get back in this?"

Spencer: "Buy Minecraft"

Nadella: "What the he... forget it I don't want to know. How much will it cost"

Spencer: "2.5 billion"

Nadella: "Fine, I don't know. Whatever. Here."

I don't know why anyone thought they'd kill support for other platforms. They'd be killing Minecraft if they did, and any future sequel wouldn't be anywhere near as successful. Xbox and PC alone would stunt Minecraft's growth, and cause huge backlash.

I guess we will never know the true longevity of Minecraft as a brand. It will be too easy to dismiss any future decline on Microsoft's handling of the brand.

I was on the side of people who believed that Minecraft was here to stay, and even with little manipulation of the product, it would still be around in 5 years. Now I am not so sure. I think a massive company like MS handling it can only harm it. I can easily see conent updates being walled off as DLC or a completely new title.

How soon until we seen a major Minecraft spin off or a completely unnecessary Minecraft 2 release? 2 years tops? Maybe even sooner with XB1 struggling. I bet they will continue to "support" Minecraft on all platforms, but major changes and updates are going to quickly become exclusive on MS platforms. I don't think this buy out is a good thing for the game if you haven't noticed, however, well done to Notch, what an insane payday. Well deserved, Minecraft is probably the most important video game since Mario.

should be clear to anyone that MS probably doesnt care much about mojang and that 2.5B dollar are for the IP.

Did you know Halo invented the FPS?
Amazing pickup. I vividly remember going to my niece's birthday party 2 years ago and nearly all the kids were on tablets playing minecraft. Crazy times

bish gets all the credit :)
I can't blame Notch, but he should release a statement.

So how long before Mojang itself is shuttered? I give it 2 years tops.
