We don't know the context, but it seems to be a case of Romeo and Juliet style star-crossed lovers. It seems like they weren't intending to fight given their past, but as they meet they realize both their nations are at war.

Only speculation, but given that this story has been said to be heavily rooted in Shakespeare, I think it's reasonable to assume something like that is going on.

We'll find out more when the game comes out! Though who knows if this scene is still in or if it was greatly changed.

Noctis and Stella are implied to be childhood friends and Noctis seems to be in love with her but they are forced to fight each other due to them being in charge of different kingdoms. Think Romeo and Juliet.

There is no way the put in an actual love story between them. The cast of the game is a boys band, for fucks sake, Stella is just in for the trailers and nothing else, you'll see.

This game is Nomura's wet dream, and the ending will be every group member removing their disguises and revealing they were Gackt (or maybe Genesis to tie with FFVII) all along. Gackt in his teenage years, of course. And they will fuse forming an Uber-Gackt with blazing nipples or something.
