You are really devoted to making sure nobody is having fun, right? And judging games from streams, seems like. The premise of these raids is ridiculous to begin with, but holding them up as some sort of proof that the game could not be fun is just out there.

Not really, I gave my review. I just want to state that I highly doubt professional reviewers will grade Destiny higher because of the raid, and most likely lower because of it.

The good thing however is that Raids are completely optional, so I can just skip 'em and do dailies.

I'm very curious about IGN though. If they write a positive review I'd like to read it.

They are taking a ridiculously long time. Perhaps they feel bad about giving a mediocre review to a company that probably provides them with a lot of advertising revenue so they've been delaying it. Whatever damage reviews might do has already been done at this point.

Or maybe the Lizard People in control of the government are telling them to hold back the review for a bit longer

IGN will give it at least an 8. They are notoriously lenient

Yeah . . . I just looked at their recent review score summaries:
good, great, good, amazing, amazing, great, great, amazing, amazing, good, Okay, good, good, amazing, amazing, amazing, amazing, good, great,

Not exactly hard reviewers. (And that includes Sims 4 and the gimped NHL 15 getting 'good's.)

At least an 8. IGN... what's going on? We'll all be playing something else by the time you put up your review.

I won't be. And it will be the first review I read front to back because they are actually taking the time to review the full game. Something very few reviewers did. I'm curious to see what they have to say about the raid since it will most likely be weeks before I really get in there and do damage.

I must say, nothing is more fun than waiting for my single player mission to finally load, use my sparrow to get to the mission start point, kill a few guys, then get the Destiny Server message...get the message again...get sent back to the mission select screen and be forced to start it all over again. Huzzah.

A game with shooting this good will never be terrible. The problem isn't that it's not great, it's that it's so damn bland. Everything about the story, the missions, the PVP and the strikes are that they're all so bland. Cut and paste.

All of this has been my experience. The shooting feels great, but literally everything else is clunky and downright awful. :(

Solo on Venus daily (with the hardest available modifier) was fun. Vex are the best enemies in the game. Knowing there is nothing to level up for is actually benefitting how much fun I am allowed to have.

204 pages. Jesus. Still shocked at the disappointing reviews for this game. This game was marketed as the Second Coming of Christ and it appears Bungie failed to deliver. I'm sure it's decent enough and enjoyable but everyone on the planet expected this game to get nines and tens. Not sixes across the board with the occasional seven or eight. TBH I expected far more from Bungie given their legacy with Halo. They had all the time and money in the world and one of the best teams to ever grace this industry and yet they produced a 6/10 game?

Kind of feel like I'm living in a parallel universe. I was so sure this game was going to be 85 to 90 at the minimum on Metacritic. Still interested in the game but Jesus these scores are surprising.

I understand the feeling. As someone who stood in line at midnight to get a copy, I was hyped for the game. I skipped the reviews and played a good 5-6 hours of the game. Then I came on here, saw the reviews, and have to say that I agree with most of them: the game simply isn't all that great. It is an ok game if you are obsessed with loot, but outside of that there simply isn't enough there to make it interesting.

So no IGN, Edge, or Eurogamer yet?

No Edge just yet. Same for the others. Some outlets wrote up articles ahead of time stating that they wanted a substantial amount of time with the game before writing up a definitive review. I think that's what's causing the hold up. If this game is averaging a six from most outlets though you can expect the infamously harsh Edge to hit this game with a five. Edge uses the entire review scale so if they think this game is average they'll make it known.

Shouldn't be too long for the rest of the reviews though. They should arrive shortly.

Agree. It seemed to me, for example, that Jeff Gertsmann just played some hours of the game, got annoyed, and gave the game a 6. It just wasn't his cup of tea. (Judging from the review itself and what he says on the Bombcast).

Many reviewed this game for its hype instead if what it is. And I do agree with a lot of the flaws mentioned on some of the reviews but ultimately it's a really solid experience as a whole.

The thing about this thread is that most of the complaints (including mine) have the unspoken subtext that the game is actually pretty fun, but it's important to address the faults.

This is me. I'm actually really enjoying the core gameplay. I do not regret my purchase. But seeing what this game is theoretically trying to be makes a lot of their design decisions even more frustrating. Trying to express that frustration comes across as hatred for the game when in reality, I'm just passionate about what it could be and how close it is to achieving it if they just add/change a few things.

Ok, so people say "review the game for what is". What does that mean, and how can you be certain it's the same for everyone? I'm being sincere when I say I was sold on this game's promised social features. So if that's what I expected to get, what the heck should I care that the menus are nice, or that gunplay feels sooo guuud. Yeah, ok. And? Where's my "shared world" experience? That is by far Destiny's biggest flaw and shouldn't be overlooked. I buy NBA2K and discover they've instread made it into a game of quidditch. "Appreciate it for what it is tho". Basically what some people are saying here.

Not suggesting it deserves to bomb critically, but come on.

I find articles like this hilarious:

"Destiny is a mediocre game, but I can't stop playing it because it's super fun!"

Well... maybe it isn't a mediocre game then? I really don't get some of these people.

Diablo 3 vanilla was a mediocre game that was highly addictive. I thought the gameplay itself was very fun, and the loot was highly addictive, but everything around that was super mediocre.

You could say the content wrapper around the gameplay was the part that was bad.

Brad Shoemaker of Giant Bomb has similar feelings of Destiny; he thought it compelling, while also acknowledging that it's not an excellent game. The other GB folk had mostly neutral/negative feelings on the game, but could agree with where he was coming from. (during this week's Bombcast)

It's possible for a bad game to be engaging or fun. But fun factor isn't the only thing going into a review... hence the scores a game like Destiny is receiving.

With that said, it's OK to like an imperfect game. Seriously.

I definitely feel like the overall sentiment about the game will change greatly over the course of the next year - much like Diablo. Just expand on the content (more worlds, more maps, better variety in missions) , improve social options (trading, public chat etc), and balance end-game loot so that there is less of a grind.

In my opinion the most important pieces are already in place. Beautiful worlds, amazing music and really fun moment to moment gameplay. Gliding around on a sparrow through the canyons of mars, double jumping and landing a perfect headshot, using my arc master super and slashing up fools - I always have a smile on my face. I'm actually pretty damn happy with the game.

Ryse is a good example. The game is average in many ways, but I really enjoyed the game for what it offered. I still play the MP here and there.

It's just a non-argument to deflect criticism.

Phantasy Star Universe was a mediocre game... and yet I logged thousands of hours into it. If the servers magically went back up tomorrow, I'll probably be on there again. Doesn't mean I don't think many, many games are better than it (even plenty that I've spent far less time playing). A game isn't good simply because they successfully place the psychological hooks that trigger your inner completionist. Many people will play something for countless hours that they're not really enjoying, because they've convinced themselves that achieving a specific goal will satisfy them... these types of games are often just really good at giving you a new personal goal.

AKA "If we complete this I'm never doing this shit again."

Candy Crush Saga or some blandly addictive mobile game can have those audiovisual hooks that entice you to keep on playing. I don't see that as a good quality in itself. Once you stop playing and are removed from it, reflecting can make it feel like a manipulative experience. Not speaking for Destiny as I only played the beta, but just speaking on a general point on whether videogames being addictive automatically means a good thing.

Why did I spend 150 hours in Too Human? Oooh for the shiny pretty loot!

I loved to play Viking and Timeshift, doesn't mean it wasn't mediocre man. Mediocre doesn't mean unenjoyable... it means nothing special, which a game doesn't have to be to hook someone. Demon's Souls will always be my fav aRPG but I can no longer play it due to already having done everything, so I play worser games over it.

Kinda like watching Big Band Theory over FRIENDS
