BTW, I have the fractal r4 case. Should the led be blinking when the hdd does work? Mine are just solid blue all the time.

I don't think it has a separate HDD activity LED. I guess you could connect the front LED to the HDD activity pins on the mobo instead of the system power indicator.

Silverstone Strider series, Coolermaster VSM series.

The Corsair CS/CX has a somewhat iffy DOA rate, and is something that is better suited for a really lower power workstation build. I'm sure it will probably be fine, but I've seen PSU stuff go horribly wrong too many times to trust it personally.
Yeah, the Silverstone Strider is the other one I considered. The issue with that was that it's not nearly as readily available as the Corsair around here, so it could have delayed my entire order (or I would have had to order it separately, which could still have delayed the build). I decided to instead roll the dice on the Corsair, also since the Corsair PSU in my current build has been running fine for basically 5 years 24/7.

If something goes wrong with it I'll only have myself to blame. Well, and Corsair.

God damnit. The tube from my radiator to my CPU interferes with the radiator for the 295X. I've got to flip the 420mm radiator around entirely.

I couldn't say this a few months ago since my account wasn't approved yet, so I just want to now say a big thank you to this thread for helping me build my first PC. I went from having basically no confidence in building my own PC, to having complete confidence that I could build it myself thanks to all the amazingly useful information that this thread offers. These "I Need a New PC!" threads are, without question, the best resource that I've ever found (and believe me, I looked everywhere!) to guide someone new to building a PC through the whole process of what parts to buy, what to avoid, and how to build it.

This thread saved me from so much frustration, and it saved me a bunch of money too. So again, thank you to this thread, and thank you to all of the awesome people in it who help out new PC builders!

Easy way to fix that.

This honestly means a lot, and made my day. Welcome to GAF!

Hi,

I'm trying to decide on what to purchase for a new pc and im a bit overhelmed. Not sure what to purchase except for an nvidia graphics card. I've got a budget of around 2,000.00$ CAD for the pc itself, the monitor, keyboard, mouse, headset and other associated software such as the OS.

Can anyone help?

Fill out the questionnaire in the OP.

Sorry missed it. Is it this one?

Your Current Specs: Alienware M11x R1 laptop 4GB ram, Intel R 4 family chipset, Nvidia Geforce GT 335m.
Budget: 2,000.00$ Canada
Main Use: Gaming, work, video editing, emulating.
Monitor Resolution: Def getting a new monitor, unsure about
List SPECIFIC games or applications that you MUST be able to run well:
-Dota 2
-Planetside 2
-Space Engineers
-Skyrim
I'm looking for around 60fps I don't know much about the rest.

Looking to reuse any parts?: Can't, laptop.
When will you build?: No deadline, but I'd like to be able to assemble it within the next few weeks.
Will you be overclocking?: Maybe

4790K stable at 4.8GHz. Still thinking I can get that core voltage lower.
That's really impressive, what's the load voltage?
There's a good possibility that I'll start ordering parts this weekend.
Hold for GTX 970 :p
Is there a consensus on what's the most reliable PSU or do they have any data anywhere that shows the failure rates of each PSU model?
CM V/VS series is fantastic as are the super top end Corsairs/Seasonics.
Jonnyguru would be your best bet.

PSU failure rates are pretty low after they've been running a bit.

Yeah, I was most likely looking at getting one of the HXi Corsair PSUs that recently released. Probably the 750. They seem to be getting great reviews. It's manufactured by CWT...they're one of the higher quality PSU manufacturers correct? Seems to be really quiet and is built like a juggernaut. Probably not the best value at 750w and it's a little pricey...but the build quality seems fantastic and I like some features in it.

After about 8 minutes running an AIDA64 stability test: still 1.284V.

(Unless that's not what you're asking >_>)
Yeah, that's superb.

The V750 or VSM750 from CM is a Seasonic Plat unit inside if you don't mind the looks. CWT is soso, but Corsair buffs up the build quality with whoever they go with (More like Jonny does, but hey).
980, only disastrous reviews can stop me now.
Oh, well enjoy then.

What if the rumoured 600$ is correct. I was all down for the 980 regardless of the performance increase over a 780ti,but if that's the US price it will equate to 800aud which is way too much for my liking.

Yeah, $600 is pushing it but I've been looking forward to building this beast for so long. Who knows, maybe I'll come to my senses by the time all is revealed.

Knowing Nvidia they'll price it at $600. When do we ever get the good side of pricing from them? Why would they price it at something like $450 if it's more powerful than a 780 Ti and they have no other alternatives on the market? They seem to usually release the Ti GPUs at later times if they'll even release one in the 900 series. If they have a Ti for the 900 in the works then I could see that cheaper 980 rumor being true. If not...they're going to milk you for every penny they can. It would seem like a Ti would come though so they can have something in every price bracket. Otherwise, the 980 would basically replace the 780 Ti's place since it's more powerful. At least I'd hope it's more powerful...

I guess it depends on demand for the card too. Hopefully it releases with no problems.

If there is ever a GM110, Nvidia might prefer the Quadro -> Titan -> Consumer route.

Iit doesn't seem like Nvidia's MO to have GM104 be 980 and GM110 (hypothetical) be 980Ti since they are different classes. If there is ever a consumer GM110, they will call it 990 or something.

I'm right there with you, I've been looking forward to this card for so long.

What was the launch price of the 680/780?

No risk. It will make the computer forget its settings and recalibrate itself on boot (your os is untouched, don't worry)

It seems that HP have deliberately stopped their customers from being able to upgrade the hardware in their desktops.
Apparently on some of the newer HP systems, there is a Secure Boot option that can be disabled in the bios so you can upgrade hardware. Because my system is a bit older (2011), I dont have that bios option and so my shitty system will only boot with this noisy POS GT520. lol. Fucking HP.Well, at least Ive learned a lesson about buying "brand" PC's. I wont make this mistake again.
Whilst digging around in the bios looking for anything that resembled a Secure Boot option, I managed disable the PCI slot, so when I rebooted the system no picture signal was coming from my PC at all. lol. Then I had to remove the motherboard battery to reset the bios so I could actually see stuff on my screen. In the process some security configurations have become a bit messed up and trying to access pages like Google will result in getting a "your connection is not private" error message. Removing the battery didnt help with the new card either, unfortunately.
Im just gonna go to a computer store and try to get a relatively cheap system to use this GTX750 in. I dont have the patience of the confidence to try and build something from scratch right now.
Thanks for trying to help though. I shouldnt have underestimated HP's anti consumer policies

Moved over my 3 SSD's and 4GB 770 from the old build. Man, I'm glad I didn't listen to those guys over at Tom's Hardware about my new Corsaid 550D case. Saying it was too expensive and such. This thing is whisper quiet! I can't hear anything coming from this new build. Amazing

Thanks to all those here that helped me select some of the parts!

Hey guys, should I get this or wait until the premium subsides for DDR4 and new X99 motherboards?(All prices are in Australian Dollars, so that is why it seems like ridiculous prices)

PC:

PC Case : Cooler Master CM Storm Trooper Full Tower Case with Side Window $199.00
CPU Processor: Intel Core i7 5820K Haswell-E 6-Core LGA 2011-3 3.3GHz $449.00

Memory: Crucial 16GB (2x 8GB) DDR4 2133MHz CT8G4DFD8213 $259.00
Hard Drive(s) : Samsung 840 Pro 512GB 2.5" SATA III SSD MZ-7PD512BW $379.00
Western Digital WD4003FZEX WD 4TB Black 3.5” 7200RPM $279.99
Power Supply:Corsair AX860 860W 80+ Platinum Modular Power Supply $288.00

CPU Cooler: Noctua NH-D15 Multi-Socket PWM CPU Cooler $109.00
Optical Drives: LG 12x Internal SATA Retail Blu-Ray Combo Drive CH12NS30 $69.00

I already have SLI GTX 670,I'll be using that until Witcher 3 or so comes out, my current specs are:

I7 2600K@4.5GHZ
8GB DDR3@1600MHZ
GTX 670 4GB SLI
Windows 7-Ultimate

Any changes I should make? Motherboard is pretty expensive but it is the only Asus MB available.(I had good experience with Asus)

Are any of these good?

Gigabyte GA-X99-UD4 $399
MSI X99S Gaming 7 $439
Gigabyte GA-X99-GAMING-5 $439

All prices are based on: http://www.mwave.com.au/

My current PC is good but it is starting to show issues, the i7 2600K though is still a beast, best Investment in a CPU ever, do you guys think I'll be able to achieve 4.5GHZ on the 5820K with the Noctua DH-15?

I've installed my H60 onto my X99S board, with the pump on CPU_FAN2, functioning at over 4000rpm, and circulating heat to the radiator properly.

I have plugged the fan into CPU_FAN1, but it is not recognised in UEFI, and does not spin. It doesn't reach any SYS_FAN pins, and I can't plug it into the R4's directly powered pins because they accept 3 pin only.

I have set the fans to maximum in hardware monitor, and I know the CPU_FAN1 connector works because I have used a case fan on it successfully.

Any first impressions about what is likely to be the issue? I would be surprised if the fan was broken out of the box, so I have to assume it's a fan control thing.

You can plug 4 pin fans into 3 pin headers so you could try plugging into the R4's headers. Otherwise sounds broken to me. Try 3pin to molex for certainty.

That's what i've been looking for but the mobo has no 3 pin headers and the R4's are in plastic shells so they won't fit.

I will have to disconnect the fan and plug it into another board to see if it works. :(

Wait why is there no HDD in this configuration ?

SSD is cool but desktop PC without proper 500-1000GB storage space is problematic.

If your broadband is fast enough a lot of the time the need for local storage just isn't there. I barely keep any games on my machine now for instance. Just the ones I actually play. Anything else I can download in an hour or two.

As someone who got an FX-6300 I can't really recommend it, well not for gaming anyways. It's not uncommon for the FX-6300 to randomly stutter on some games. Sometimes the stutter isn't so bad, sometimes it's terrible and can last 5 minutes, but it's only happened to me in one game. I'd go with an i3 or the Pentium G3258.
Some R9 270s go for around $150.
I'd stay away from the Corsair CX series.
Not knowledgeable with ram and I'm just echoing what I'm told here, but I've been told that 1600 CL9 or 1866 CL10 what people should be going for, anything higher will be slow. Not sure if it's true or not.

Member
It's not that the higher does see slow, it's just that you're paying a lot more for a 1 fps difference. The only time you need the fast ram is when you are going to exclusively use onboard gpu

Yeah I'm going with the g3258 Intel because it keeps getting recommended, idk why but every time I seen that name I just thought it was old

People buying <600$ pc are typical users of fast broadband connections ?

And anyway 120 gigs is nowhere near enough - drop something like Titanfall on it and you have full drive.

Depends where you live. You guys get the arse torn out of you for fast broadband, in the UK fibre is pretty cheap.

I can attest to 120GB not being enough... (Tried preloading Dead Rising 3... had to remove all the other games when it tried to unlock :p - Runs fine at 900p if anyone is wondering, tears like crazy during cutscenes though...)

Also, 2x2 = 8?!
ASRock Anniversary M is also slightly cheaper (or is it that much worse?)

Storage would only be a problem for some people. Really just depends on what you do on your PC and what it's used for. I really wish I could get 500GBs+ storage in SSD at a reasonable price. If anyone sees a good deal somewhere for one sometime that would be awesome.
