Plex confirmed for Xbox One

Uhg, super jealous that the X1 gets Plex. What the hell is going on at Sony? Youtube, Plex, and common media playback are seemingly basic features that shouldn't be taking this long to implement. Come on.

The roommates and I have a PS4 set up in the living room to play PS4 games. If we want to use youtube, we have to fire up the PS3 instead. Like wise for any type of media we want to play via USB. Sure first world problems, but we're coming up on a year with little to no updates on the PS4 end.

Wait what? There is no Youtube Support on PS4? I only use Youtube on PC and iPad but come one Sony..

Nothing! I said nothing!
Plex works beautifully on ps4 as well. It's through the browser so the interface is not as intuitive as a native app, but streaming stuff from your laptop/network disk/etc works flawlessly.

Isnt the server doing all the work? Pretty pointless.

Strange that 3rd party apps seem to be coming out far more regularly on the Bone than PS4. Not sure if MS is working with them more or what. I mean obviously PS4s firmware is stuck in stability mode, but I don't see why 3rd parties would care about that. Unless the APIs are so much better that the userbase trend still makes them choose to go with One as their focus. That would have to be a pretty difference though since most of these companies are no doubt looking at the projections where the PS4 is very likely to be the dominant console in all major markets unless something drastic happens.

Grab a chromecast?

This is pretty cool, the XB1 has been our primary media device for a bit between Netflix and Media Player Preview, and I run my FireTV into the HDMI In for Plex and XBMC. Once Plex is released, I likely won't need the FireTV anymore, although the XBMC app is still a pretty handy backup for stuff that has issues with Plex.

I know it's petty, but it'd be nice to have an all in one device for all of your media consumption.

If you have an iPad/smartphone/tablet, then IMO plex + chromecast is a better experience than booting up a console and navigating with a controller. Plus chromecast has HDMI-CEC so it'll switch inputs automatically.

I know what you mean though.

There is a remote for the Bone that is nice. Plus, the devs are adding some pretty nice Kinect functionality to the Plex app.

Oh plex on Xbox should be good - was just commenting about PS4. IR control is useful plus the developer over on the plex forums was very excited about complex language parsing with kinect which could be fantastic if he can pull it off. Things like 'play me a random G rated movie that was released between 1980 and 1990'

Then of course if you have your DVR through the HDMI passthrough that effectively means you can kick off plex without switching inputs.

Does this use its own video player and so play all file formats ?

Or is this somehow bound to what X1 can play by itself ?

Still bound by what the OS supports for direct play. If files aren't supported they will be remixed or transcoded. If your server can handle the file, it will play on the Bone no matter what the Bone can handle.

Will it be able to launch plex on the Xbox directly from the iPad app, even if plex isn't currently running on Xbox?

I've been watching YouTube just fine on my PS4 for months now.

Just use the browser and go to http://www.youtube.com/tv

You can even log in and navigate through your subscribed channels. Plus, if you tie it to the YouTube app on your phone, you essentially have a remote control ready to go. You can set up playlists or browse on the phone and send all of that to the YouTube page on the PS4 that you're using.

Well developing an app for Xbox One is just developing an app for Windows (with a Kinect SDK and a front end UI designed for console).

Not only is it not really shocking that MS is probably always going to be more advanced with app development for the console than Sony is (cause it's Windows), but it also seems like they push companies more for development of apps for the platform more than Sony probably does.

Totally agree that Sony is just sitting on their asses concerning UI updates.

However Plex works quite well with the PS4 browser

does xbone have universal remote support? specifically harmony products?

even if ps4 gets dlna and plex, it will still suck more than ps3 because in its current state i can't use my harmony remote with it (HDMI-CEC sucks so don't tell me to use that).

Fantastic! Can't wait till release.

me either.

I had been using the ouya to watch my ripped movies off a hdd with xbmc, but started setting up plex recently. One less device in my living room.

You can already get plex to stream to the xbox one in a run around way with an app on your phone, but a real app that can browse will be far better.

Yea, MS is definitely pushing this. They've made a pretty big deal about giving developers the ability to create a single app that works across all their various platforms, from PC, to Tablet, Windows Phone, and Xbox One. A lot of the code can be directly reused across the different platforms, and they also provide tools to make the needed platform specific adjustments (such as Controller & Kinect support in the case of the Xbox One) for each platform.

So I expect this to continue and for app support on the Xbox One to grow even bigger.

Well, with PS3 media server I think you can do that on the PS3 too.

But this is a preferable approach.

I've tried Plex as a media server on the PS3 and xBox 360, its just not as stable as a dedicated app like on the Roku and other devices.

Additionally, I am happy but surprised they are doing this. Seems like consoles these days want to try to lock you into purchasing media from them rather than give you ways to access media you already own.

Great news, makes me more likely to buy a xBox One
