DLC has always been a possibility, and looking at Mario Kart 8 it would be a waste for nintendo not trying it out with Smash

Yeah. Smash should be used to promote games on Nintendo platforms. MGS is never coming back to Nintendo.

Obviously, the 3DS DLC will be split into two categories.
Each pack will be three stages, 1 new character, and a few new alts.
3DS + New 3DS DLC.
Rayman
Snake
Lucas as a Ness Alt
Paula as a Ness Alt
Britney as an Olimar Alt
Protoman as a Mega Man Alt
Star Wolf
New 3DS ONLY DLC (This requires a New 3DS to use.)
Ice Climbers
Chorus Men
Ridley
Metal Mario as a Mario Alt
Pink Gold Peach as a Peach Alt
Cosmic Rosalina as a Rosalina Alt (Think a "transparent" looking Rosalina.)
There are so many possible things.
I like the idea of exploiting the extra power of the New 3DS for exclusive DLC though.

I really do hope we get DLC characters. Smash is the kind of game that lasts for years, and having some extra characters to spice it up would be amazing. Stages would be cool too, of course.
It worked for Fire Emblem. Maybe it could work again?

Yep, she would have been awesome. At this point I think the only characters that would even be considered are Ridley, Adam, and Anthony. I'd love to see Rundas or Sylux, but I don't think that will ever happen.

And this the the reason you've heard them so much. The easiest way to add credibility to a rumour is to include accepted norms.
If I had the facts and chose not to include any of the aforementioned names people would likely dismiss my info as fake since it goes against what people are currently believing.
Newcomer DLC should be obvious.
Release it right before Splatoon comes out. Would be some great cross-promotion.
Or wait and see if the game is proven as an IP and put an Inkling in the next Smash game.

I don't see a future where this game doesn't have DLC. I don't care what we get, just as long as Professor Layton is involved. I was really holding out for him as a newcomer.

That doesn't work simply because that would require segregation of multiplayer. And trying to make that work would be difficult and ultimately to the game's detriment.

Actually, Roy didn't do that well. His game never came out outside Japan. But it did get the rest of the world to go "Fire Emblem? What the heck is that and why is this Marth so awesome?" And so a Nintendo franchise gained a foothold outside Japan with respectable sales until several years later where Fire Emblem Awakening is a million seller.
Smash Bros is quite the effective marketing tool if you want to launch or expand a franchise. See also Pit in Brawl and Kid Icarus Uprising.
An Inkling in Smash a month or so before Splatoon arrives? I could totally see it happening.

Fire Emblem came out in Smash before the west ever knew about it and that greatly helped it's popularity here.

But it was already a popular franchise in Japan. Hell Sakurai even toyed with the idea of making them Japan-exclusive characters, from what I recall reading.
I think he'd also rather wait for Splatoon to actually come out so he can play it and use it as a source for the character.
