Xbox One Exclusive D4 is selling like complete shit, please help me #SaveD4

If this was a PS4 title I would get it :p

haha jk, once the X1 gets a price drop, I'm picking this up right away, it looks very good, and fits my style of quirkiness.

I think D4 could definitely have stronger legs than other smaller games but that probably won't help the production of later seasons.

So enlighten me, this game is episodic correct? Is $15 going to cover everything after what's already been released or will it be like The Walking Dead?

Q. Whoa, that is bad. So why is the game selling so badly?
A. It was basically sent to die. It was unceremoniously dumped on the Xbox One’s store without a release date announced in advance. D4 has received essentially no marketing whatsoever. This leads me to believe that the publisher, Microsoft, lost faith in the product and told the team to halt production and just release whatever was finished.

This isn't true. Swery has said he wanted to pull an 'Apple' with the release of D4. Didn't work sadly, but it was his choice to release the game at TGS with no fanfare or build-up.

Not sure if MS lost faith in the game during development though. It's possible...

This is a fantastic idea for a thread. We really need Phil to get behind something like this though. Realise that D4 isn't just a niche game, but something that could become a huge IP for MS if they treat it with some respect and care.

This is awful logic. Sega could have done the same thing with Bayonetta 2, but felt it wasn't worth the risk of another loss to make a minority of gamers happy. Nintendo felt it was worth the risk and now it might come back to bite them. This is why publishers generally ignore public outcry.

I was being more than a little facetious. I understand the financial risks might be such that pursuing more episodes is a fools errand. Still, I have to wonder just how costly the games development was. Its a surprisingly small game, even for one that's episodic in nature. And to hear that no new episodes are being worked on currently? It seems a little odd. What took the team so long that this is all they have to show for? Was it Kinect? I think it works quite well. Was it the engine? It looks only slightly less ass than Deadly Premonition.

Bought this Day one. One of my most wanted games for Xbox one. Sad about the poor sales though.
I own three copies of DP. One Ntsc and one Pal for the 360. (it was stated as region free at first, only have a Pal xbox360)
And one copy for my pc.

I am gullible consumer, I literary buy almost everything that comes out. Got game when it became available as digital on Xbox One, haven't played it yet. Is it worth trying out?

At least I am one of those 10k lol.

Seems like conjecture based on the OP part. Losing faith is a big claim, one that should be backed up.

I bought it op. Hope ms advertise this. I know Phill would be proud of this given how much he adores Swery. I'm confident well see another episode at least.

Aren't there any advertisements for the game on the XBL store?

There's a small one in the games store, but it's not really in your face or anything. The out of nowhere release didn't help, because even as someone who was looking forward to the game they just announced it right before it was going to actually come out.

It's a shame MS handled it like that, the game deserves way better.

Yes.

Also, this brings up the question, do you only appear on the leader boards if you've played the game?

I swear, I wish I had a higher paying job. I would actually buy a Xbox One so I can immediately play D4.

While listening to Dillinger Four.

If you haven't given away the 20 codes yet, my gamertag is LifeExpectancy. However, once I download and play this game, it will be on my wife's tag, WifeExpectancy. Reason being I had heard rumblings that the achievements in this game were glitchy, so I don't want to risk my tag for unobtainables. But at least that way you will see that I have downloaded and played it.

If it's good, I'll buy it a 2nd time since I'll be effectively spending only $5 the first time of my own money. If it isn't good, well, then at least he's made a sale out of your offer good sir.

Euh...it is a niche game, and will remain so. The best one could hope is for the niche to grow a little more. This thread might help, and so could a PC release with a PROPER marketing push...

D4 got announced before Microsoft changed their indie policy for Xbox One. They saw the late success of Deadly Premonition and probably paid a decent amount to make it exclusive.

It was prominently featured on the store frontpage in the dash back when it released, IIRC. Obviously that gets cycled out as new stuff gets released though, so that was never going to last too long.

For $5 I will buy this game in a heartbeat, it's on my wishlist but I thought it will be on GwG soon.

a Master Ninja, you are doing God's work, this is a great thread.

For those of you worried about the quality of the game, just check the game's OT, it's full of gushing impressions. In my opinion, it's one of the most interesting games you'll play this year on any platform, and it's already claimed some 15 hours of my time (I still have a couple of grindy achievements to unlock, but it's been pure fun up to this point). If you have an Xbox Live account, but don't have an Xbox One, and you're planning to get the game when you buy the console, please consider buying it now through the web store, the game will wait for you on your account.

Oh, and if you buy it, please don't let it sit in your backlog, play the game - you are likely to love it or at least appreciate all the self-evident passion put into its creation - and tell others about it.

Any idea how many episodes there will be?

It's not determined, they are planning to keep it going as long as there is interest. Considering the low initial sales, I would say that they would try to wrap this story up in the next release, if there ever is one, but the game is set up in a way that lends itself well to continuing with additional cases indefinitely.

lol, it's completely dependent on the kinect.

you can't pull an Apple if barely anyone knows you or your product exist.

It's not completely dependent on Kinect. Not sure where you got that idea.

And you're right, but maybe he thought the success of DP allowed to make such a move and have it pay off/

Seems like conjecture based on the OP part. Losing faith is a big claim, one that should be backed up.

It really does. They seem to be somewhat behind it, allowing Swery to delay it for months so he could apparently release a more content filled version?

How is it niche though? It's basically an interactive adventure in the same way that TWD is one. The story might be a little 'out there' with some weird characters, but the gameplay is exactly what you'd expect from a more evolved Telltales game. The storytelling is also infinitely better, as is exploration and character depth.

It's a Telltales game done right. How anyone could consider this niche is baffling. Is it because it's from a Japanese developer?

This is THE game for me to get on the Xbox One. I want this way more than the other game I plan on picking up when I get an Xbox One, Sunset Overdrive.

I wish it was on the PS4 as well so I can play it right now but 'll very much pick this up when I get an Xbox One someday, God willing.

I'm surprised at the lack of marketing/hype/trailers, etc by Microsoft at events and at the store. This game deserved way more from the looks of it. This is THE most unique looking Xbox One game at the moment, what a way to drop the ball!

Well I'll get it when I get paid even though I won't get an Xbone for a year or two. It's one of the few titles I'm looking forward to for the system so I'm sad about it doing terribly.

Just bought it. If i knew it was only $14, I would have bought it sooner. It will go my backlog for now. There are just too many games coming out to keep up with.

By the way, if you're going to tweet Spencer about the game, tweet @aarongreenberg as well, he's their head of marketing now.

Q If you want to sell your game, why make it Xbox One exclusive?

If you want to sell your niche game, why make it an exclusive of any kind?

Probably because it's been in development for a long time, and developers still can't dive forward in time to see how the console war develops. Also, a platform holder showing interest in your game and giving you money to make one probably has something to do with it.

The difference is that so far they treat it like shit. Spencer knows about the lackluster or even nonexistent marketing for this game and I doubt any tweets will change his mind, this whole situation with D4 is really disappointing considering the "it's all about the games" image of Spencer the last few months.

The only chance this game has is by positive word of mouth and only that, it's pretty clear at this point that MS doesn't care about this game.

Honestly it looks really awesome. I'll never buy it because I won't be buying that console, and am super bummed I'll never see it on PS4, but I hope it does end up doing well.

Sad. Interested in it, but don't really play X1 enough to warrant buying more games on it yet.
If you make for PS4, I'll more likely get it ;)

It certainly looks interesting and I've heard good things about it outside of GAF as well but not owning a Xbox One is probably what stops most people from buying it. Will get it on PC Day 0 if it will ever make it to steam.
