Do you see Titanfall or Destiny as huge FPS franchises by the end of this gen?

I can see both being that. It just depends on how both franchises evolve going forward. They both need work to get to that point. The sequel to both games will determine that for sure.

Destiny yes, it is all ready (first week sales for new IP)

Plus the mechanics are fine, they can fix their shortfalls for Destiny 2.

Titanfall...remains to be seen. Not a good sign EA never released any sales numbers, Create a good SP campaign though and I hope it does well,
EA doesn't give numbers anymore for any titles.

haven't played Titanfall. Destiny, I'm bored after three weeks, and regretting buying it digitally. maybe it'll become a huge franchise, but Bungie wasted any good faith I had with the half assed piece of shit they released.

People saying no, I don't understand how you know. It all depends on if the next iterations are good or not. If Titanfall 2 is the greatest thing since Halo 3/ Cod 4 than sure it will be huge. Same with Destiny.

I never had faith in Destiny to begin with, even when those threads popped up proclaiming it to be the next big thing. But there are still a pretty big population of people playing, so if they improve on the next one then it could be pretty huge.

By the balls is perhaps a slight exaggeration. I was in Game earlier and they had three shelves full of pre-owned Destiny copies. It was crazy.

Looks like CEX is also getting swamped with copies too.

Yup. Lots of people already gave up on Destiny, and while many people enjoy it (myself included), word of mouth for the game is pretty negative. I don't think the game is a disaster, but Bungie/Activision have certainly tarnished the brand a bit. The current game needs a LOT of updates and the second game will need to be really good for the game to continue to be a huge franchise.

Both failed for not delivering a satisfying single-player experience. Titanfall also failed for not coming out on PS4. If they corrected those things I think they could end up being very successful. I have no interest whatsoever in Titanfall, but I'm personally disappointed Destiny failed to deliver. It in particular I hope corrects its mistakes.

I'm always surprised to see so much apathy towards titanfall. Its like COD except way better. The mech and pilot combat is just awesome. I played the shit out of it at launch and now I play it off and on. Its still a blast and the updates are good.

Both will succeed. The core game/gun play is very well executed. They need more content, modes and proper SP campaign. Once the content is flushed out and they stop focusing on DLC/Map packs.. these games will be awesome.

I think everybody forgets how long it took Call of Duty to actually become a mega-blockbuster... also that the first game in that franchise was exclusive to PC.

both will be huge but titanfall will be bigger. if respawn correct a few issues the sequel can be amazing + release on ps4. titanfall seems like a natural place for former cod players who got bored with the same shit but destiny is something completely different.

destiny on the other hand needs to be rebuilt from the ground up, it has broken fundamental that need to be changed for sequel

Both will need good sequels to redeem themselves.. or I think they both will be forgotten by the end of the gen. .

I think both were pretty short sighted. It is fortunate that Destiny already made Activision their money back as I can't really see the game having long legs.

As an example, I am a level 29 Hunter. 30 is the cap, this can only be achieved via raid gear. I am a supremely unlucky individual. If I was in Dangaronpa I would be called "The Ultimate bad luck." For someone with my luck these are my options to hit 30(which again can only be done via raid gear):

I can make two more Hunters and raid 3 times a week, sending all the good stuff to my main.

or

I can just play on Tuesday, check in with Xur on Friday, and carry on about my business.

This last one is what I'm doing and probably what many others are doing. That's not good. You want people to be continually playing, not stopping by once a week. As once a week soon turns into "Why the hell am I doing this?" And then we stop playing period. Understand that there is no story in either game, so currently 30 is the only goal in Destiny since there is no story motivation or player agency.

I think both games made their mistakes. Up to the developers to turn the ships around.

Destiny, yes.

In its current form, it's kind of bare bones... stripped of flesh and just holding together: and it's still brilliant fun. There is SO much that can be added and improved (not just the story), that if they actually pull a Reaper of Souls over the course of time, well... it will be a monster. It's up to Bungie now to take ownership of what's required, and keep improving the game.

Titanfall, in a form...yes.

I loved my time with TF, put in over 100 hours and don't regret a thing... I'll still visit it occasionally, but it's even MORE bare bones than Destiny.. what is this, the year of bare bones FPS? (oh wait, Wolfenstein was full fleshed..).

When devs remember that Story/Lore/Immersion MATTER, well.. we as gamers will be in for some excellent current gen treats.

Destiny 100%. I think people underestimate the game and its potential.

Titanfall is hard to say at this point, depends on the sequel and if it's on both platforms.

I see destiny becoming much better because of Bungie will have learned from what went wrong in the first game which will ultimately improve the second immensely.
As for Titanfall, I have yet to play it but exclusivity damaged it's potential at the time. Dev's learn from their mistakes..most of the time.

I see both of them having big sequels.

If Destiny continues to improve on its solid foundation, it will be great.

If Titanfall 2 is more fleshed out as well, multiplatform, and hopefully a new engine, it will do very well as well.

IMO, Titanfall 2 has more potential than Destiny.

Destiny showed all of its cards. It is what it is. I played it in the beta and then rented it. I'm not a fan and have not recommended it to anybody.

Titanfall 2 will certainly have single player, and probably a co-op mode. That along with a more meaty multiplayer, and Titanfall can finally be fully realized. This is also assuming the game releases on PS4, XB1 and PC.

About a year ago I would have said that they both definitely have a future but "won't do CoD numbers," but now I'm not so sure about the second part. CoD numbers ain't what they used to be, and Hardline could wind up telling us that Battlefield is beginning to sag as well.

If both of them can drop last-gen and produce sequels that make major improvements on all their predecessors' weaknesses, both could wind up turning a lot of heads and shouldering more of the load for their respective publishers.

Of course. Both publishers have far too much invested in these franchises to let them fade out. Ubisoft did the same thing with Assassin's Creed last gen. The first one was just decent, but after that they managed to churn out a few good-to-very-good sequels. Burn out is starting to set in at this stage, but that's beside the point.

Destiny is a bit different in that it'll likely rely on expansion packs, but the core gameplay is solid enough that interesting content has the potential to buoy it into a major franchise, rather than a one and done. Titanfall is a given to be "major" through marketing budget alone, although they'll have to do a ton more to make it stand out as a top-tier franchise, considering the similarities to CODAW.

Destiny yes, quality doesn't even matter with a game like that when you have Activision's massive marketing budget. I think (hope) Bungie will get it right with the sequel, it has the potential to be amazing.

Titanfall... probably? Sequel will be multiplatform with a larger budget and more development time (single player campaign this time). I think it could go either way depending on how CoD Advance Wars does. Maybe people will play the new CoD and feel they've had their fill of Titanfall. Or maybe it'll get people even more interested in Titanfall.

I think long-term Titanfall has more potential if the second game is great simply because it's the type of game that probably appeals to the masses more. If Titanfall 2 is across everything, the multiplayer is more fleshed out and a single player campaign is added I can see it doing huge numbers.

Destiny 2 I'm not sure about because I think Destiny was different from what a lot of people were expecting so I'm not sure if it will catch on as much as the original unless there are major changes with the sequel.

Definitely

I can see the potential in both.
  • Titanfall should go multiplatform in the next installment, add a decent single player campaign and more MP content.
  • Destiny is already popular and sold amazingly well, I suppose they mainly need to add more content to an otherwise solid FPS title. Make Destiny more robust on all sides, story included.

Was Halo as successful as it is today when it first came out? I think it's too early to tell and like others have said the marketing will not let either of these new IPs to die so soon.

Agreed.

All eyes on Destiny 2 now I guess. The first made a decent splash, but seems to have soured a great many people if pre-owned stocks are anything to go by.

I think both of them will make a pretty kickass sequel which address the common problems in their first game, and that's when people will start seeing them as actually huge franchises.

Destiny for sure. Things that are wrong with that game are easy to identify, but it has some serious hooks that has enraptured people with it. The problem with Titanfall is trying to identify why it didn't hook people the same way. Not saying Respawn can't rectify that, but many people loved Titanfall, but the active player base fell off a cliff. Finding out why that was is going to be key.

Destiny just needs better NPCs, better stroy, more loot, and more content.

I think they both have potential to become huge franchises as long as their sequels deliver on their original promises and in the case of Titanfall if it has a compelling single player experience.

Probably, but I would honestly just rather have a traditional FPS with all the standard modes. (Solid campaign, horde co-op, good mp)

I agree. I want both sequels to have a good (preferably offline) campaign and plot, and then everything else is just gravy.

no. Halo, CoD, Battlefield and Star Wars Battlefront will be the big four.

So will those four being successful will prevent Titanfall and Destiny from being big successes?!

You know what I'd love to see as a Titanfall 2 selling point?

Build it around a fully-featured campaign that fills the role of SP, co-op, and MP without shortchanging any of those individual modes. The solo and co-op campaign would be put together something like the Halo series, with semi-open levels and flexible "setpieces" that still work with multiple players. The MP side of it would take cues from Halo Reach Invasion, L4D Versus, and the Enemy Territory series. What I mean is that there'd be sections of SP/co-op levels where you could take on a team of enemy players like a sort of short, mostly seamless, objective-based multiplayer match whose outcome would affect the rest of the level. Those sections would be optional and wouldn't bring the game to a halt.

Destiny, absolutely. Activision has too much riding on this now with COD sunsetting, and Bungie has a great foundation in place to build upon. TitanFall also has a great foundation (and frankly, I find it more fun to play) but the addition of a proper single player campaign and beefier multiplayer content is required. I don't know if Respawn is going to increase their team size to what's needed to support that. Plus the console exclusivity is a millstone around the IP's neck. If TF wants to get huge, it'll have to be on PS4.

Titanfall will be a very popular shooter for years to come. The gameplay is too good.

Destiny? There's so much hate for this game i'm shocked people on this forum are so dedicated to it.

you speak so well
Destiny. Besides the generally negative attitude on GAF, pretty much everyone I know is playing it and enjoying it. It's going to do well as a franchise.

Both were incredibly hyped, had a shit-ton of preorders, review embargoes and both were also incredibly underwhelming on the content side of things, and a bit underwhelming in the gameplay departments.

So, yes. Ofcourse.

Titanfall sold what, 3M or so on a platform that hasn't sold 6M yet?

Yeah... Titanfall is doing as well as you could expect. It's the best selling XBO title (not sure if that's still the case with Destiny out now though)

Destiny.

People are idiots and think Titanfall is CoD with mechs. If you've seen the gameplay on how to properly play Titanfall, it looks nothing like CoD. If people actually played TF the way it was supposed to, it would take off.

Titanfall, yes. Destiny... maybe. The game has a solid core, but it's also left a sour taste in a lot of people's mouths. Let's face it, it's not the best first impression for a franchise. If they can turn it around in the DLC, they've got better odds, but as things stand...

Titanfall has more room to grow vertically while Destiny has more room to grow horizontally. TF can build upon its foundations and become something more while Destiny will focus on just creating more of the same content it already has.

Destiny easily. Despite its problems, the foundation is solid and I dont see Activision / Bungie flinching yet. They'll shore up the complaints for the sequel.

Titanfall no. The studio is probably too small and needs more money to pump out something much larger.

Careful judging performance of a game based on negative or positive reactions online. Not online are those voices many times in the minority, also much of it can be people just piling on even if they don't play the game.

Like if I only read NeoGAF I would swear Little Big Planet was one of the worst platformers made and is no way successful. But it has sold over 10 million copies.

titanfall is more fun to play than destiny but it had such sparse content, no wonder the player-base took a nose dive.

it's extremely fluid though, i was impressed.

and the stories for both games are about on par sadly lol.

sequels have a lot of room to improve. i think destiny will be huge this entire gen. titanfall only if it breaks exclusivity.

Of course. I'm sure Destiny will be fine in the future but it isn't going to be as big as they hoped. Bungie has been a studio in serious decline for many years and this game shows that.

With the $500 million that was dedicated to the Destiny franchise, I'd sure hope so.
But have you seen Titanfall?
Titanfall was more critically acclaimed than Destiny so I expect it to move further as well. Obviously it's going to sell less if it's limited to only 3 platforms, so I wonder if the sequel will be introduced to playstation in the future.
