Modders re-enable native Oculus Rift support in Aliens Isolation

This might make me pick this game up. My DK2 hasn't gotten any use since my ROG Swift came in, mostly due to the fact that the Oculus drivers cause compatibility issues with G-Sync.

Anyone know if that's fixed now?

I wouldn't count on the rift ever playing nicely with G-Sync, honestly.

You really want to run these kinds of things with the rift as your only monitor, though. There's a bug with the rift drivers right now that will key v-sync to your primary monitor, which is one of the (many) causes of judder/microstutter.

Thanks, that's good to know.

I... I just bought it.

Holy shit! This soon?! I'll try this out as soon as I get home. How does it run on DK2? Can I expect a judder free experience?

I wasn't talking about trying to use G-Sync on the Rift and know about the mismatched res/refresh problem, which is why I set the monitor to 1080/75 before running any Rift apps.

The problem is if ANY trace of Oculus Drivers are detected on the system, G-Sync refuses to work on the actual monitor for any games I want to play. I just get a black screen. Really fucking annoying as I'd obviously prefer to play most of my games on the monitor, and just switch on the Rift to check out cool demos and such.

But I have to install/uninstall all the drivers and setup every time I want to switch between the two.

That sounds really annoying. Have you brought up the issue on g-sync boards? This sounds like a problem the g-sync people should be aware of.

Yeah, it definitely is and really pissing me off as I'm a huge tech nerd and spent a good amount of money on these things only to have to basically choose between one experience or the other.

I've tried to get some help, but the issue isn't getting any traction because it's happening to such an incredibly small user base. I mean, how many people do you know who own both an ROG Swift AND a DK2?

Both are expensive toys with low production/high demand. I'm hoping it gets sorted as G-Sync and Rifts have a greater presence in the market.

You know, this is a terrible solution, but what I'd do is repartition the harddrive with my operating system on it into two, then install two wholly separate installations of my OS on each partition. Then install the OR drivers on one OS install, and keep the other without them. Install a boot manager to let you switch between the two, and that way you can basically enable or disable OR support at boot up.

That's way more work than it should be, but it'd do the trick.

Man. I was going to wait to play this til CV1 came out before I learned that the final game wouldn't have VR support.

But I've already started playing. Only an hour in, haven't even had an encounter with the alien yet or anything. Now considering waiting to play it again.

So question is - how 'repeatable' is the horror of the game? Am I better off waiting to play it for the first time with CV1?

EDIT: I don't have a DK2.

So now that this doesn't need to rely on mouselook for headtracking, I'm wondering if I can use the Razer utility to map some makeshift hydra support onto this.

3d with the rift is great, so much better than any monitor.

Oh I know. I've tried it. The first thing you notice when you put on the rift is "holy shit it's in 3D." Then you realize how much better and more natural it looks than 3D movies and the like. Stereoscopic 3D is so simple, and it just works you know.

So, ahem.

This game is fucking horrifying lol

I have to stop myself from playing more because I want to go in blind tomorrow, but holy shit this is really tense

This is a very cool development. It's a pity the devs didn't include this at launch.
The consumer version of Oculus can't come fast enough.

technically, this was in at launch. This doesn't add it back in, it merely re-enables it.

Part of me wonders if the reason it's been disabled is for liability issues, part of me thinks it might be because the rift isn't a consumer product yet. Either way, the VR support in this game is really good, far better than I expected. This is good enough to play the entire game, they did a lot of good work that you can't do well with an injection driver that removes just enough of the fuss to make this a playable experience. Tiny things that go a long distance like making menus floating windows that you can look around at - it's a huge improvement.

I really, honestly do believe this game could cause heart attacks, though.

They have clearly left the hooks in for Oculus support so that enthusiasts will be able to get it, whilst simultaneously washing there hands of having to support it or deal with any liability issues. Works for me!

I was on the edge of deciding whether to buy this game, but now it will be mine for sure.

Running a 4770K and nVidia 980; it's pretty juddery. Also due to to high contrast lighting in the game many areas are a smear-fest. Even when I disable all other displays but the rift and start cranking down the options I get significant judder. It's very cool but also very hard to play for any significant amount of time. Some of the scripted first person animations that move the first person camera are disorienting. It will likely make people sick so I can see why they didn't ship with OR support. I have a really strong stomach for this sort of stuff, and it bothers me enough that I rather play it on my monitor.

There's a lot of really cool stuff going on here, though, so it's worth a look if you have a DK2. If you are a developer it'll probably really elucidate what you shouldn't be doing if you want to make a first person game along these lines.

Don't do it.. I mean wait for CV1
(it's probably incompatible with CV1 lol)
because... that's what's I'm gonna do. Altough it would be interesting having the comparison when CV1 is finally available. The wait is hard!

It's not in a launch if it's not enabled.

Which is what I think. They can't say Oculus enabled on the box because by the time the consumer version arrives the dev part might be sufficiently different that it won't work.

Now given the relatively low resolution of the PS4 port. I wonder if it's deliberately done because it's Morpheus compatible. Hmmmmm.....

Because it probably still doesn't work well. There was probably a reason it was disabled in the first place...my guess is that it's not nearly good enough for consumers

I think you're right. They probably have most of the work done and when the Rift launches they'll "patch" proper support. But right now the OR is a development kit, so it didn't really made sense to launch with the feature perfectly tested and all that (since testing costs money).

Still, the few hundreds of people that use a DK should be in touch with enthusiast sites to know this has happened. So this isn't a problem at all. And if there is some error they can just say "it wasn't ready for the customer".

I'd love to try this at some point. If there is something 'janky' about it at some point in the game - something that motivated it being disabled - could modders do something to fix that, or is there only so far you can dig in to the execution around this?

Modders won't be able to fix many of the issues because they are content issues. The game just wasn't built for VR.

Despite all my objections about viewing DK2 as a consumer product, I have to admit there is going to be some pretty good content for the kit by the end of the year. Elite Dangerous, this, and Project Cars in a few weeks should each be compelling experiences.

Essentially the first big budget VR titles :D

Would love it if GTAV would get some kind of hidden VR Support just for the modders to play around with. But it will never happen t_t

Oh man just tried it out, well the survivor missions or whatever it is. Loved the part where the Alien started chasing me from behind and then bam straight through the stomach lol. He did scare the shit out of me when he found me in the vents and then proceeded to kill me. Thanks Krejlooc. This weekends gonna be fun :)

For anyone interested I just ran the AI benchmark both on a 1080p monitor and on a DK2. This game takes a performance nose dive when running on the DK2; about 80% dip across all benchmarks. I don't have time to look into it now, but if judder and sub 60hz framerates are an issue for you in VR you might want to avoid trying to play this on a Rift.

I can't seem to get this working, I've done everything and been over it a few times..

Th OP is wrong. I had to do this.

1) in ENGINE_SETTINGS.XML (found in the DATA folder) change the stereo options to:

<Setting name="Stereo Mode">
<Quality name="Rift" precedence="4"/>
</Setting>

2) Set the Oculus to extended mode.

3) In the oculus configuration utility pause the service.

4) Start the game.

I think having Off and Rift with the same precedence causes an issue

It's not really a mod.

People who will say this about this method are being unfair to how this work is done. If you go back and look at how these people figured out how to enable this support, they did the sort of work modders do. On the boards I frequent, what most would call "modding" flies under the banner of Engineering and Reverse Engineering, and stuff like this belongs there. As most colloquially know this practice as modding, it seems appropriate to call this a mod. When these guys are digging around in hex dumps, they're modding.

Why do they disable such feature ? It's like the Doom 3 Rift Version. Is it for legal reason ?

Most likely support.

This way everybody who has a OR will know about it and use it, but they can never complain about things not working or demand fixes.

I would disagree. It is clever and nobody discounts the effort. But just inspecting and finding something isn't modding. You need to actually modify something that isn't already available.
