VideoGamer.com Video Preview of Sunset Overdrive

We want more objective criticism and less subjective blabberism. Less buzzwords too.

His critique seems fair to me. The game seems to have an interesting world and mechanics but everything else looks repetitive. Most videos i've seen look similar, guy grinding around efortlessly killing hordes of mindless blobs. I also thought Infamous was dull, i enjoyed the game at forst but by the time i unlucked the whole map i was sick of doing the same thing over and over, never got to finish it.

Fwiw, i fond most modern games really repetitive, especially action and fps games.

Looks like the same strategy for every fight:

-Grind on a rail going back and forth out of range of enemies while shooting.
Cept the enemies they have shown jumping on those same "rails" to stop you, or the flying enemies that fire at you from above, so from what i have seen you're never really out of the range of enemies.

Year of Burns:

LKWIJe0.gif

This was great.

If you came to Videogamer just for Matt Lees, you'll be glad to know he has his own channel if you just want him. Sounds like the same kind of people who went to Rev3Games just for Adam Sessler.

Matt's stuff at Videogamer was good, his Youtube channel is good as well but I've not been listening to his podcasts.

Anyway, Scammell > everyone.

Don't kill me Burns.

They used to be home to Matt Lees. When he left, there remained little reason to ever return there.

Some months ago, i would have agree to this instantly. But Chris Bratt and Simon Miller are (were?) genuinely fun to watch.

Edit. And Scamell too.

"Just as dull as infamous"

:/ Not sure how to feel about this. Still watching the video.

Feel good because inFamous was an amazing game. If SO is as good as that along with insomniacs crazy weapons then my purchase will be more than justified.

My guess for SO is that it'll score in the mid 70s, maybe hit 80 (at most)

I thought the general perception towards Videogamer.com was positive, especially after those Bioshock critique videos, never saw this much vitriol towards them, but they are criticizing a hyped exclusive.

People just hate it when things they're excited for are criticized.

This thread is funny

Pretty much. People's hype investments can get out of control.

If people find a more positive video preview, they can make a thread for that too. Maybe some don't want this preview to be getting signal boosted (already 5 pages)?

Hmm? Where do you see that? The people that like Infamous are generally looking forward to the game, and the people that don't are worried. That's what I'm seeing.

I am nearly finished the campaign so I think I can answer some things from this thread

"The grinding is slow" - there is a boost button
"Dull like Infamous" - Infamous SS was dull yeah, because you can press one button (neon) and sprint forever etc. Sunset is much different, it's a completely active experience when platforming and always moving.

The game has some problem areas (story, sidequests, etc) but the gameplay is highly dynamic and anything but dull

Could see this coming from miles away. I think this type of game "design" has no future.
I always thought Insomniac Games made sub-par games anyway, i.e there's always a better game to play in each category made by another developer.

The reason inFamous SS is so interminably dull is the fact that most of the game consists of sidequests and those are just the same 5 things repeated over and over. You say SO has a problem with sidequests. Is it the same problem inFamous has? That's a deal breaker for me if so.

Seemed fine to me.
Unprofessional because it is a review in all but a numerical score.

They throw in a caveat to cover their arses at the end, but it's pretty definitive in its tone all the way through. Watch other previews, while they're positive they're pretty open ended and explore possibilities of the game way more.

He didn't really like the first two hours, what else was he meant to say? From what he said, I doubt it, but maybe it will improve for him.

Really? They said plenty of times that they only played two hours. And that they will have to see what happens in the rest of the game for the review.

They even pointed out that there were still tutorial elements at the point at which they played.

From what I can tell you're disagreeing with their opinion of the game. If it was a positive video about how good it was in the same vein, I doubt you would complain about it being unprofessional.

why would you release a preview of a game when you're not even out of a tutorial?

why would you release a preview of a game when you're not even out of a tutorial?

Because the tutorial has so far gone on for 2 hours, which is kinda long, and is a substantial enough amount of time to give some early thoughts, which they did.

I really can't see what the issue is here, other than people being upset they didn't love everything, they even praised the art design, and past Insomniac games.

xxracerxx

Don't worry, I'll vouch for them.
why would you release a preview of a game when you're not even out of a tutorial?

So after 2 hours people should not post their first impressions? What's the regulated time until first impressions are allowed?

Not really because Dave has given himself enough rope to give it a bad review. These other guys will have left little room to provide an objective REVIEW.

Also, lower your aggressive tone.

I am sorry but I personally didn't interpret anything he said with an "aggressive tone." Relax brother, we are talking videogames. We have one guy on Videogamer didn't like it much, another did. Most games are like that. Some people like them, some dont.

That doesn't mean you wont enjoy it.

You know what has repetitive game play? Every game! But if you have fun doing it, it's fun.

Videos like these are irritating. We are inundated with crap by people trying to stand out to make money in video games media by putting forth whatever nonsense, whether true or not, to keep the bills paid.

That's why best person to always listen to is yourself. If you like something, go with it. You know yourself better then most to make a proper purchasing decision.

It's a preview of what they played and they stated that multiple times. The person speaking said that if they were to buy the game they would not want to continue playing after those two hours.

What is wrong with that opinion? They are entitled to have it.

They also stressed that the rest of the game could change their opinion.

Idk why people get so heated on someone's impression of a game. The footage is playing right infront of you. It's perfectly understandable the game isn't for everyone but he didn't butcher footage in some way to force his opinion (unless he did? Idk I'm at work)

the first 2 hours have been all over the web for someone to form somewhat of an opinion

I really think this game needs a demo. Or a video from insomniac showing like the top 10 awesome things you can do in the game to make people see what crazy things are possible that previews and early gameplay won't demonstrate

Or they are just giving their honest opinions and they are not trying to stand out in any way.

They are under an embargo.....

its disingenuous to release a preview of a tutorial and say that the game is "dull" thus far.
But they are allowed to show the first two hours of gameplay...in no way is it disingenuous to post first impressions on what you are allowed to show.

This is true for ANY game, not just Sunset Overdrive.

Their biggest criticism seems to be that while getting around is fun and the weapons are fun to use, there's nothing interesting to use the mechanics for.

Fetch quests, boring enemies, etc.

Yeah, I'm not too sure about this one.

Insomniac has gone downhill in recent years.

Previews for this game have made me somewhat unsure of the game's quality.

I'm not going to write it off, but I am definitely waiting for final reviews.

Is it OK to release a preview of a tutorial if you liked it?

Not if you're told by the publisher to not say anything directly positive or negative about the game prior to the official review date, which is exactly what Videogamer and everyone else streaming the game was told. That's why it's unprofessional.

Of course it is, they were told not to. Every streamer on Twitch repeats the same thing - "I'm allowed to show you two hours of gameplay, but not offer opinions about the overall quality of the game, good or bad." Videogamer are the first I've seen directly break that agreement.

This is BS, there is tons of positive previews of the first 2 hours and if someone has a negative opinion by all means it should be treated in the same way as all the positive ones...
I just jumped in and out of three streams where the streamers were all giving glowing impressions.

The problem is people only want to focus on their here negative one...
