True.. Not having enough is a bummer, but I'll give it a try anyway. Reading a lot of good things for a game I've never even heard of.
I want to get into Phantasy Star but the fucking incompetence combo of Sony and Sega keep standing in my way.
Ah, now this is a good thread. Wish God Eater 2 got an US release, did not like the first one that much but some of the new features sounded great.
And I'll never understand how Lord of Arcana got a sequel.
The only hunting game I've played was God Eater Burst which I liked a lot. I played it solo with the AI despite the genre seeming to be more geared towards co-op. Hopefully God Eater 2 will get localized.
If I were to play a Monster Hunter game and all I had was a Vita which PSP game should I look at getting? Are MH games fun to play solo or is it balanced entirely with party play in mind?

It seems the demo isn't available on PSN here in Finland.Hmm. I think you can still cop the Freedom Unite demo off PSN.
Monster Hunter Freedom Unite. It was the latest iteration and by far has the most content. Each MH game has single player content and, if you're so inclined, you can also do the content meant for a party.
Freedom Unite is a great game. I think I put over 200 hours into it and I didn't quite scratch the surface as far as high-level content.
Nice thread, I'm a big hunting genre fan. There are quite a few games in the OP that are not hunting games though.
Type-0 and a lot of the honorable mentions (Especially the Kingdom Hearts games). Just cause they're mission based RPGs doesn't make them a hunting action game.Word of warning to anyone interested in PSO2es on mobile. Expect to spend a lot of time updating. It's been like 6 hours so far and I'm at 25%.
Which.
That was only annoying in MHFU.Monster Hunter is wildly different from PSO.
MH requires a lot of pain in the ass type stuff, like following the monster around the map. It's about knowing the different monsters.
PSO is my favorite game ever, and I don't really enjoy MH.

Also Sword Art Online. That's an offline MMORPG if anything. I say this having played all the games in question quite a lot. They're just not Hunting Action games.
Neat thread! I still play PSØ & PSP2i on an off. The PS series must be good enough for me cause I've never really tried any of them other games listed o.o;
Would Dragon Quest IX get an honorary mention? It may not be as actiony as the rest but its full of that dungeon, baddie, looting goodness!

The current scope of Hunting Action game being used for this thread is any action games or action RPG's with a mission based structure, party based co-op, and character customization of some sort.
Freedom Unite, as far as I know.GAF, which monster Hunter is the best for psp?
I want to give the series another chance.
We'll likely get 2 Rage Burst. That seems to be how Namco is playing it; only push the expanded version worldwide.

Guess you might as well add World of Warcraft and every MMORPG then lol. I think your definition is way too broad. That's why they are honorable mentions. With Type-0 we've mainly talking about Agito, which was brought up in the thread before. Also:
SAO is an action RPG that is mission based, has party based co-op, and character customization. If I take it off, then FF Explorers should go too, as it apparently has a combat system in line with FFXI and FFXIV.

They may be honorable mentions but I don't see why Kingdom Hearts games should be compared to games like MonHun as the same genre, it just doesn't make sense.
Then neither is SAO since it runs on a pseudo MMORPG engine with auto attacks, cool downs etc.WoW and other MMOs like it aren't action games.

Also, who was the gaffer making a monster hunting game? I remember reading about it in the indie development thread. Game looked great. It was a husband and wife combo if I remember correctly
Its really low budget and simplistic but has done neat ideas. Probably the unique feature being that you can dynamically adjust boss difficulty in the middle of a quest to get higher quality drops. Me and another guy played up until the game's equivalent of HR because the monsters got impossible to deal with with just two people.OMG, Nano Diver! I think it's the only one in this genre that I never heard anything else other than the name.
How good is that game?

My favorite genre, thread subscribed.
I bought the Dreamcast just for Phantasy Star Online: over 800 hours just on that game, playing online on dial-up internet with my friends and offline too.
Hunting games are time consuming and I have others games to play too, but I would love to play Phantasy Star Online 2 one day. I still have Phantasy Star Portable 2 sealed for PSP.
Or perhaps Phantasy Star Online Episode I & II HD on PSN. Oh God, I would buy that for sure.
Anybody into Vindictus? I'll probably install it tonight.. Sounds cool.
I hate a how PSO has been retoconned into a "Hunting Action" game. Is Destiny a "Hunting Action" game now too or do they have to be Japanese action RPGs to qualify?
I just realized that I never played PSP2
I played PSP, never beat it, but I quite enjoyed it. How is PSPi2 compared to PSP?
The story portion of the game isn't but thats about the same with PSO/PSU/etc. Its got 170-some missions an a bunch of which require the whole dungeon crawlin' thing whether its revisiting ones from the story or the infinite randomly generated ones!Is it mission based?
It's hard ta let some things go especially when you're still not at max level or beaten everything or w/e! I can't be enthusiastic for PSO2 because Segac but Nova might be worth getting pumped up over!Still keeping the flame lit, bless your enthusiasm in the old PSU threads~
PSP was basically PSU. PSP2 & Infinity add an change so much they almost feel like different games. For one the difficulties much higher! But now ya got charge attacks for ranged weapons, roll dodging, gaurding, a new race (Infinity-only), an lots lots more.I just realized that I never played PSP2

Hunting action doesn't seem like the name for whatever genre PSO is in. (When I hear that, I think basically of a Monster Hunter clone).I hate a how PSO has been retoconned into a "Hunting Action" game. But there's something about the loot focus and the lovable repetition that definitely makes me feel like MH and PSO scratch the same itch. Not sure quite what to call the broader group that includes both.

The first five pages of this thread at least, will be about what isn't Hunting Action and what is.
