VideoGamer.com Video Preview of Sunset Overdrive

Surely if it went against embargo it would've been taken down by now? They were talking about it openly on their podcast too. They just couldn't talk about anything after the first two hours. Every streamer I've seen was giving impressions as well.

Ah right maybe that guy just jumped the gun then. He kind of admitted he wasn't sure on the legal grounding.

Also this is the first time I'm hearing about some of these sites lol.

That's not what the article says at all.....

Really? I was sure I got the gist of it. Then again I haven't slept in ages and I'm running on fumes here.

I know someone who has a review copy of the game, we were talking about the font debacle and he just said :

"Before trolling Sony they should release a real game"
"You wanna be very confident when trolling because next monday the troll might reverse on you."

He won't say more because of the embargo, but yeah...

Resistance 3 was one of the best games of last gen, and Fuse was pretty mediocre. but super fun in couch co-op....

You're focusing on the wrong thing. His mate confirmed what many people feared, it's not a real game.

That should worry everyone.

But why people are worried about this aspect?

This game screams "GAME!" out loud all the time. It doesnt take itself seriously, it focus on a good ammount of weapon types and enemy variety (with robots, giant and flying enemies) with explosions and elemental effects everywhere, with tons of gaming references, with challenges and stuff, even with appealing colorful visuals and effects.

It may not be a good game by the end of the day. But that certainly sounds like a real game, more then most products we have nowadays.

Edit:
Nevermind, its Miles. Lol
I am on my smartphone with Gaf pictures turned off and could not see the avatar. Damm.

Also while looking for early SO previews/impressions I found this:

http://www.lazygamer.net/video/sunset-overdrive-pre-embargo-early-preview/

So apparently the very existence of these negative impressions is even going against the NDA/embargo. Interesting.

Videogamer on the latest podcast mentioned the NDA was to only talk about the game's first 2 hours, not anything about negative impressions/preview or whatever. jstevenson (Insomniac dev here) seems fine with this impressions video existing.

"I'm literally legally not allowed to talk about it, hence impressions."

If Insomniac/Microsoft are not allowing negative previews/impressions, then that's really messed up opinion controlling.

Is it common practice to have an NDA that basically states 'only positive impressions allowed kthxbye'?

Not saying that this is the case here, but how granular do these NDA's get?

That is not what I said.. negative impressions are definitely not embargoed.

The main embargo drops soon but this early video embargo has certain rules which I feel were definitely overstepped.

Videogamer is huge though so they get away with it the same way IGN and Gamespot do...

As an extra post...

We're not allowed to write an impressions article about the game but we are allowed to talk over gameplay... like we did here https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=7fPuQZWyVaA

Personally I see this as bending over to the YouTube community which I find distasteful.

The NDA we had to sign was less strict than many others and it definitely does not imply you can't be negative.

What it says in the part that where I feel Videogamer overstepped is

and should not reveal, reference or hint at your impressions of the overall game

amongst others...

It seems so many are invested in seeing this game fail. People suddenly bringing out the "I know a guy who knows a guy who played the game" just screams counter-marketing agenda to me, considering that's being thrown around with no proof whatsoever. Honestly I think that's unfair, whether this was going out for a Sony, Nintendo or MS console....this (videogamer) site isn't the only review site out there.

It's completely videogames.com's right to not like the game, but I really wouldn't dismiss the game entirely based on one site. If we readers are asked to give DriveClub a chance even with its flurry of 6's, why not Sunset Overdrive as well?

Never have I seen a website be that blunt.

Only if it's those fucking brand deals over on Youtube which are basically native advertising contracts made with Youtubers, and have now been revised after Totalbiscuit whistleblowed it, and Boogie confirmed he'd never sign a contract that disallowed negative opinions.

I think thats pretty typical and shouldn't be looked at as some type of indicator of the quality of the game. Rockstar does the same thing

Yeah sorry for all this man it's entirely my mistake in the communication of my original post. I didn't mean to indicate that negative impressions were embargoed; I simply meant to summarise your primary point in the article that I showed in the bolded text. So yeah apologies for all this. This is what happens when you engage in discussion on GAF and try to contribute whilst being profoundly exhausted and tired.

I should really get some sleep. Glad you came in here though and posted with the clarification! That was quite awesome of you.

Here, I counted a lot of "I love" and the first opinion, is "It's awesome"....

The only difference I see with the videogamer "preview" is that one have negative opinions... but both have opinions are and shown in the very same way.

To me this game looks fun in terms of what you can do but watching someone play it can be boring. However once I play it and with all the crazy weapons and wall/rail grinding, I know I will enjoy it, I though the same about Infamous, boring to watch others but fun to play yourself.

What does 'keep your credit card handy' refer to?
If you're confused it works better in the context that this is from an article that is more on the positive side vs. the video in the OP.

I always recommend that you don’t pre-order titles until the reviews drop and there is no reason why I would change that stance now. But make sure you keep an eye out for our review and keep your credit card handy.

I'm (Gavin) actually not reviewing the game for Lazygamer.net, that job has been handed off to two other writers.

So far I'm loving the game but I'm still quite early in so things can change. My issue with the videogamer video is that they spoke about a lot of things our NDA clearly states that you can't.

We are a different region so maybe they have a different one. Or maybe they see themselves as still on the right side of the NDA, either way that is there choice.

Personally I think videogamer.com is one of the better gaming sites out there, it just irks me that the larger the site the more wiggle room you get. We get smashed for one wrong thing while sites break embargo all over the place...

It's really sad how incredibly politicized video gaming coverage is. It makes it really difficult for sites to be honest and provide good coverage rather than acting as an extended PR mouthpiece. Unsurprisingly, it's led a lot of us to be extremely skeptical of any sort of games journalism.

I'm beggining to understand why Adam Sessler up and left Rev3Games. Probably was disgusted by all of this draconian control over Youtube videos with NDAs and crap.

That's not the worst of it.

Rumour has it that MS are in salvage mode with this project. Focus testing, now backed up by early reviews is painting a very negative picture of the game. Claims of repetitive, dull, lacking in polish, lacking in appeal, inconsistent, lacks direction are often heard in hushed tones when Sunset Overdrive is mentioned.

first i've heard... source?

MS have distanced themselves completely from Insomniac, their only interest now is to try and recoup the money they invested into development as well as money for their contractual obligation to market the game.

distanced themselves? they seem to be giving the game quite a bit of support. its the exact opposite of distancing themselves...

It's not all one sided, Insomniac are apparently very distraught of having backed the wrong horse with the Xbox One. They were hoping for a five million seller, but with the Xbox One install base in dire straits and the market's complete rejection of the Xbox brand, well, you get the picture.

... ah, sarcasm!

That's why Insomniac allowed Sony to use the font for their recent sale. It was a reconciliatory measure to get back in Sony's good graces, so they'd allow them to make more games after the Ratchet and Clank reboot.

lol, i get it

It's pretty much a disaster from any perspective. Insomniac weeping, MS ruing, critical backlash, market on course to reject the IP.

It's perhaps the biggest disaster we'll see in gaming, rivalling that of ET. There will be documentaries about this game for years to come...

and this sealed it. lol my man, great post.

I think the most bizarre thing there is how most of those people seem to literally post about nothing else but the Xbox, and have Xbox-related header images and profile pictures. I don't know why they're talking about ponies, though. Anti-MLP, libertarian, pro-GG Xbox fans? I'm thoroughly confused.

I got the game early yesterday at my local mom n pop and played through the first couple missions, about an hour and a half total so far. Really love the visuals, and so far the first few weapons are cool. It's definitely a funny game that doesn't take itself seriously. I do however question the lasting power of the game. From what I see, there isn't much to do around the city. There are a few things to collect for amps, and what look like some race-type events. I could see the game getting very repetitive, but hopefully as I play more I'll see that's not the case.

So yeah, I can kinda see where the videogamer impressions are coming from

Lawyer's fees.

That's what I thought at first, but he's referring to buying the game. He says something along the lines of:

I'm not saying you should pre-order this, but when the reviews come out you'll want to keep your credit card handy to rush out and get it.

Uh, multiple two hour twitch streams? I'm pretty sure people can use them to formulate a positive or negative opinion of the game themselves.

Upload some clips please, I want to see how the frame-rate is.

And was there any day one update? Size? What does it do, etc?

Funny seeing this thread pop up again after yesterday's streams pretty much made the Videogamer.com preview look kinda silly.
