Super Smash Bros. for Wii U POTD Thread 17: Smash 3DS Discussion @ OT PLS

Ash is probably one of the most aggressively positive people I've seen.
Don't change.

I seriously don't get the appeal of limiting Smash to flat stages with platforms. Traveling stages are among my favorites; they can showcase a huge variety of areas while changing up the layout quite a bit. Stage bosses aren't as common as people like to think (I count three, four if Rayquaza does more than just fly through), and the size of Pyrosphere and Gaur Plain look like the bosses won't be that big of an issue. Walk-off stages are fun, and add a whole new layer of strategy. Bridge of Eldin is one of my favorite stages; it's great for epic showdowns between me and my friends.
People need to quit whining about what's "legal" and what's a "counterpick" and just need to actually get their hands on the game.

Footage of Windy Hill, you say? We just posted some!

When is Garden of Hope going up? I saw some footage in the Preview video Andre posted earlier, and I'd like to see more.

Lost World main theme, seems like. Really hope that Sonic doesn't get shafted again regarding music. I want some new arrangements, not gamerip songs.

Considering how good Sega is with music, I'm actually surprised they're allowing Nintendo to take direct rip offs to represent their mascot.

"Just sit there, give us the list and we will work our music magic"

Maybe it's cause I didn't play Fortune Street but Smash Tour doesn't look all that to me. Really sucks cause I was looking forward to the Adventure Mode.

I don't mind the direct rips that much, but since they're going with that approach, they're missing an opportunity in not using the remixes of Mario and Sonic themes from the crossover games. Especially considering the quality of the arrangements and limited number of people who would have heard them in their original setting.

lost world arrangement, it sounds like?

post onett

Not an arrangement - it's "just" the main theme from the game, which is still super good!

And sorry, but for whatever reason, Onett is one of the stages Nintendo is not letting event attendees post footage from. :(

It looks great!

Did you guys record any Wuhu Island gameplay?

We did! Here's a list of our posted footage so far:

Wrecking Crew (4 players)
Orbital Gate Assault (2 players)
Kalos Pokémon League (4 players)
Mario Circuit [MK 8] (4 players)
Jungle Hijinxs (4 players)
Yoshi's Woolly World (4 players)
The Great Cave Offensive (8 players)
Pyrosphere (2 players with Ridley)
Wuhu Island (3 players)
Windy Hill (4 players)
Bowser Jr. vs Master Hand and Crazy Hand (Classic Mode)

the inconsistency between which stages get logos for specific games and which get general series logos (as shown here) is kinda odd

like, port town aero dive is decidedly from f-zero gx and temple is decidedly from zelda 2 but for some reason they get generic franchise logos

ah well

WHAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAT? It's not like they're from franchises that don't have logos!

Edit: Oh, I misunderstood.

Temple is inpsired by zelda 2, but it's not ripped directly from that game. Aero dive, however, I don't have an answer for you.

I just watch GX's videos of Wuhu Isalnd and Mario Circuit. It's good to see that they're not like what I feared they would be. No autoscrolling in Wuhu Island, and no fighting on the ceiling in the Mario Kart track. Awesome!

I now have three more new stages that I'm looking forward to!

Sorry, I mean how most stages get icons saying which game in the series they're specifically from (e.g. NSMBU icon for Mushroom Kingdom U, Skyward Sword icon for Skyloft), while there are some that are clearly from specific games, like Port Town Aero Dive and Temple, that just get the general F-Zero and Zelda series logos. It makes sense for stages like Mario Circuit (Brawl) and Coliseum, that aren't from specific iterations, but... dunno why they're doing it for those.

I'd hardly call it a "problem", lol. It's just weird.

edit: ehhhh I guess Temple is debatable, but w/e

They were like that in Brawl as well, although Halberd now has the KSS logo, as it should.

Shafted? Sonic is one of the few game series out there where you could literally blind pick any song directly from any game and have a 99% chance of it being amazing.

I guess you and I have different definitions of "shafted," but if "all" Sonic gets is a hand-picked selection of some of the best songs from throughout his games, that's hardly something to complain about. Rearrangements sometimes end up worse than the originals anyway, as we saw with the Angel Island rearrangement in Brawl (quite good, but not as good as the original).

That said, Mega Man and Pac-Man have both received a handful of rearrangements. I think Sonic probably will too.

Looks and sounds great!

Agreed!

Wow, thanks. I really appreciate that. That's something I actively try to be and put out there just because there's already more than enough negativity and cynicism in gaming today, especially gaming coverage. :)

Also couldn't agree with you more about stages. People need stop complaining (they won't) and go build custom stages that satisfy their very narrow tournament standards (they won't) and let the rest of us have stages that actually go places and do things (they won't).

Not sure about Garden of Hope since I didn't record the footage, but I've asked Andre and will let you know.

I'm pleasantly surprised at the MK8 stage. It could have been awful with the gravity gimmick, instead it ended up being really clever and looks wonderful

But I don't like "tourney" stages. I like some hazards, I just think the majority of them in this game are too intrusive. The videos you guys have put up have been very helpful though, as I now know there are stages with hazards (like the new Mario Circuit) that (IMO) don't ruin the match.

I have the creativity of an infant, so I have to rely on the stages the devs made.

Aside from the bosses which stage hazards look that intrusive? And keep in mind there are 3 stages with bosses. I mean, I thought stuff like Gamer could've been intrusive, but watching videos it really doesn't look intrusive at all

You do realize every time you disagree with someone you basically tell them to GTFO right?

Another slap in the face to F-Zero fans. They couldn't even bother to spend a minute to add the right logo. Like the series being dead wasn't bad enough.

:lol

I would say Port Town Aero Dive should probably have the F-Zero GX logo, but I can understand why Temple just has the generic Zelda logo. Even though it originally debuted with Zelda II music, the actual stage isn't really inspired by that game at all. There's no temple in Zelda II that looks anything like that. If anything, it looks like the ruins of the Temple of Time from Twilight Princess or something.

In a similar vein, though, I don't think Wily Castle should have the generic Mega Man logo as the castle is very clearly and specifically the one from Mega Man 2.

As in "Heathcliff"
watching gamexplain's videos really melt down my concerns about the stages. All I can says, BRING IT ON! My hype has been increased by tenfolds! :D

Gamer, Jungle Hijinx, Kalos League, Pac-Land, Wrecking Crew, Garden of Hope, and the boss stages are the ones I'm worried about. I also dislike the big stages since I'm never going to play 8-player smash outside of the inevitable events and challenges that make use of it.

No, it's only when I'm talking about people who are complaining nonstop about everything and are making hyperbolic statements like "every stage is garbage and this is the worst stage lineup in Smash history" (paraphrasing). That doesn't help anyone and serves only to bring everything down.

There is such a thing as measured, fair criticism!

And besides, I'm not actually telling anyone to GTFO. I've already made it quite clear I know very well those people are not going to stop complaining.

Just putting it out there, I haven't seen a single hazard in Jungle Hijinxs. Also, I don't believe any of the explosions or collapsing floors in Wrecking Crew hurt you, so I think that stage is hazard-free as well.

Garden of Hope seems to be mostly hazard-free, and Gamer's hazards (via the mother) seem easily avoidable, but that's just based on the videos I've seen.

I don't consider myself ultra competitive and I don't really care about legal or pick stages as long as I can play them myself, but I do think some of the 3DS stages are actively annoying. It's a bit like tripping in Brawl -- better players can still win, but tripping just tends to annoy everyone.

I feel like for a lot of people, Magicant would be a cool stage and a lot of fun if only the flying men weren't so strong and required to be involved. The same for the yellow devil -- it takes an actively cool stage, and adds a giant obstacle that's just ANNOYING. There probably are players who find it fun to hit the thing and try to kill it, but to me it falls pretty far on the "annoying" side of the fun-annoying line. I don't say that in a tourney sense or anything -- I say that as a casual player.

Similarly the problem I have with traveling stages are that they lend themselves to random unexpected deaths. One part of a stage might have awesome music and be very cool...but you can't stay there. Abruptly, you're torn away and you have to fight the stage instead of fighting people. Otherwise, you could die because momentum carries you up/down or whatnot.

I like Smash for fighting players, whether it be with or without items. What I don't like is spending a lot of attention fighting NPCs or stages. THAT is my objection -- I think there is room for creative stages without falling so far on the annoying side of things, but of course that's all relative to what one enjoys.

what a bad mentality to had. Also, this comment doesnt help at all. All you did was to tell people to shut up. Theres people that, in this past year, have made actual great posts explaining what they dont like and why and also expressing that things are not black and white.

and you're not actually quoting any of these supposed people who are saying this and addressing your posts specifically to them

What looks bad about Kalos league? It looked fine to me, and it doesn't seem like Rayquaza will appear often. Gamer concerned me until I saw actual footage and it's hazard seems both tame and easily avoided. Jungle Hijinx seems fine, but maybe better suited to 3 or 4 players. And what's wrong with wrecking crew? Garden of Hope seems pretty typical in terms of hazards, and given the crab just charges in a straight line, it seems easy enough to avoid

Quite the opposite, actually; I actively acknowledged that people are going to keep complaining no matter what I say! I also never told anyone to shut up; I said it'd be awful nice if they stopped complaining and had something else to say on occasion, that's all.

And in the past year, sure, that's true. But in the past day, since all these new stages have been revealed? No, it's just been nonstop, hyperbolic negativity.

Looks like it's time for me to head out for a bit until things cool down a bit; I'll come back a little later with more links to the videos we're posting! Hopefully discussion will turn more a little more positive given a bit of time.

It sounds to me like you are taking people's criticisms and preferences way too personally.

Oh, since it seems like Wrecking Crew revolves around the destruction mechanic, it seemed like that would hurt you.

Where are the videos of Gamer, Garden of Hope, and Kalos League? GX only has the water & steel hazards of Kalos League in their video, and they don't have the other two up.

My main concern with Jungle Hijinx is in 1v1. I'm worried that it might be possible to knock your opponent into a barrel, and then play keep away for the rest of the match.

For some reason, Youtube videos uploaded within the past 48 hours are not working on Chrome. If somebody knew what the problem is, help would be greatly appreciated.

Honestly, how many of the people complaining ever really played the stages they're talking about with another human being (for the 3DS version), and how many just saw videos (usually from a not final build) and made assumptions? Based on my experience with the 3DS version, even the yellow devil didn't seem that intrusive (albeit I've only played that stage vs cpu) since he really didn't appear to often and most of the time he stands around and doesn't really do much. And how many people complaining about the wii u stages have even been watching the videos that have been cropping up?

If you're complaining about the lack of neutral tourney stages I can get that, because that's more obvious (although there will almost definitely be more than Melee's 6 legal stages (and one of those is a counter pick)). But I feel it's dumb to write off a stage as not being fun without ever giving it a chance

Gamer is up as part of other videos, as is garden of hope though we don't see too much of that

If you want to keep the discussion healthy, next time you can, instead of generalising like this:

People need stop complaining (they won't) and go build custom stages that satisfy their very narrow tournament standards (they won't) and let the rest of us have stages that actually go places and do things (they won't).

... not do it??
