Batman: Mask of the Phantasm.

Its just perfect. Action, drama, a great story - it has everything. I like it more than any live-action Batman movie even though I think the Nolan trilogy is quite great.

Brofist. Such a great soundtrack too.

Has every Ghibli movie been recommended yet? Go pick one, they are all great.
Not quite every Ghibli movie. Haven't seen any votes for The Tale of Princess Kaguya and its 89 Metacritic score yet and people can actually go catch that one in theaters right now.

It's a superior film to the oft-mentioned The Wind Rises for my money.

I'm currently watching Ghibli's Only Yesterday and I have to say it is fantastic film. I have seen it before but it was back in the 90s and I couldn't fully appreciate it then. Film captures life of a ten year old girl really well, and all in all it is such interesting and humane story. So watch Only Yesterday.

This thread sure is giving me the feels. I should rewatch some of these again.

The only animated film worth watching over and over again...

Right on, brother. It's basically animated Star Wars with robots and a bitchin '80s hair metal soundtrack. Frank Welker, Leonard Nemoy and Orson Welles as the villains, what more could you ask for?

Wait wasn't there another Moomins movie not too long ago about a comet? Had Bjork do the theme song?

Regardless, I haven't seen any Moomins films yet, but I used to watch the cartoon on tv as a kid and LOVED it. One day, I wanna visit the real life island(?), Moomin house they have somewhere...in Europe I think.

Yes, there was the stop motion film Moomins and the Comet Chase released four years ago. They're both based on the same book Comet in Moominland.

There's also a new Moomin movie, released a two weeks ago, Moomins on the Riviera which is based on the Moomin comics. Trailer: http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=8ie8lqrOe_4

And the "Moominland" with the house is indeed somewhere in Europe.

It is actually the best Ghibli film, viewed from any angle.

I haven't seen Millenium Actress yet, didn't really look super appealing to me but it's getting a lot of praise from you guys. Guess I should check it out soon.
My favourite animated film, honestly, is probably Whisper of the Heart. But if I had to choose only 1 film to recommend as a must watch, it's gotta be Princess Mononoke. Grave of the Fireflies coming in at a close second.

Guess I need to watch Millennium Actress.

Spirited Away is my answer though, for reasons already outlined by other posters. I love pretty much all of Miyazaki's work, but this one took the creativity and wonder to another level.

It's been a few months since I blindly followed the advice of random gaffers and just watched something they reccomended (I watch my Dredd and Speed Racer blus regularly) so I'll make this my next priority, thanks. (My friend has made me watch several by the people that made Spirited Away and his favorite Princess Mononoke.)

GORGEOUS MOVIE
(though this trailer doesnt even come close to doing it justice)

Well, I wouldn't go that far. I like Takahata's direction style but for me the wondrous worlds Hayao creates are on whole different level.
I have to agree. I didn't like the ending, the car ride was pedestrian and I have an intense hatred in general for flashbacks as a narrative device.

What I mean is, I would recommend it for adults as well.
After NIMH, it probably would've been my choice.

There are certainly some adult themes in the movie. Plus the theories about the family are not really a conversation for a child.

I expect this thread to pretty much be a Miyazaki love fest with Disney/Pixar sprinkled in and some other movies scattered throughout.

If I had to choose a "masterpiece" it would have to be a Miyazaki as well, but I feel like there are so many good things about a lot of animated films I wouldn't want to slight them by choosing any one film. For instance, I thought Madagascar was not that great before I watched it, but after watching them with my daughter, she loves the animals, it's really not that bad. Some of the jokes are pretty funny, plus it's Ben Stiller and Chris Rock. Funniest characters in the film though? The penguins. Some of their lines are perfect.

Nausicaa: Of The Valley of The Wind

NO ONE POSTED THIS YET?

WHAT THE HELL MAN.

The manga is such a superior version of the film though! After reading it, I could never consider the film as god-tier. :(

Is this a stealthy way to say most people are dumb?

When I first saw Millennium Actress, I understood nothing about it, but I also was a super dumb kid back then. I need to revisit that film, since like Blue Velvet, I remember almost nothing about it.

I don't think "wondrous worlds" are the point of comparison here, since Takahata goes for something completely different with the visuals in his films. Which, incidentally, are meticulously conceived to be strongly united with his thematic treatments, be it Only Yesterday, Pom Poko, Gauche, or Yamadas; something Miyazaki's films lack.

Yeah, not arguing you here. You can't compare Takahata and Miyazaki, both are unique directors. Miyazaki's talent for creating humane stories, set in worlds of whimsy and magic is just my cup tea. Personally I don't see Only Yesterday as Ghibli's best work as you do.

I'd actually recommend this only if you're into Nasuverse.

at last, for christ's sake
glad to see so many ENG mentions. movie is fantastic. Easily tied with Hercules as my most liked underrated Disney movie

This.
Lupin + Ghibli.
So good.

And that is an awesome cover.

It's one of the proposed covers for the Discotek Media release, which is coming to DVD on December 23rd. Blu Ray next spring. :)

It'll include all dubs, an interview with Manga voice actor for Lupin "David Hayter" and lots of special features!

If I gotta choose something ghibli i'd go with grave of the fireflies as it gave me the most 'feels' out of any japanese animated movie I had ever seen. akira was rad as was wolf children and rurouni kenshin samurai x trust and betrayal.

the lion king is still my favorite tho

this thread reminded me I need a recommendation.

basically I loathe anime but have heard good things about Miyazaki. What film of his would you recommend I watch with my 5 year old daughter, I just looked at a "top 11" of his films on youtube and some of them seem quite dark.

suggestions?

The Cat Returns is good fare for small children. Miyazaki was not the director, but he had a big hand in it. Also, when she's mature enough to handle some perilous situations, a little bloodless violence, and some offscreen deaths, Laputa - Castle In The Sky is one of the finest adventures out there.

this motherfucking masterpiece right here.

Good lord, that movie. I agree, though part of me feels it's hard to argue against anyone mentioning The Iron Giant, Totoro, or Spirited Away as alternatives.

As much as I admire Grave of the Fireflies, it is just hopelessly depressing.
