Why isn't Nintendo making MORE games like Splatoon?

By that I mean, from everything they've shown so far, this game seems to encapsulate everything that makes Nintendo great --

1) Cool new gameplay
2) Colorful, fun graphical style
3) Charming as hell
4) Introduction of new 'characters'
5) A new IP that's also a system exclusive!

Innovate and create. Isn't that what Nintendo always used to do? Just like they're doing here with Splatoon.

So why is it such a rarity then that we get a game like this from them? Why not more games like this if they are still so capable of doing it? More new IPs? More new characters? More experimentation?

It seems to be going over well so far, right? People seem to be excited from what I can tell.

So can we expect more of this Nintendo...please...?

They claim they are.

Splatoon and the three prototypes are the first games to emerge from Garage, a new Nintendo development programme set up last year in which developers break off into small teams and work on new ideas. "There are increasing numbers of young staff at Nintendo's development studios these days," Miyamoto says, "and these young guys really want to express themselves." Work is done during office hours, but he compares Garage to an after-school club, in spirit if not in schedule. "Class time's over: they gather together and think about new projects completely apart from their everyday business assignments. When all of those projects have advanced to a certain stage, we gather together and exchange opinions on the outcome of each of them, and together we decide which ones should continue. We may have shown several software titles at E3 [that came from Garage], but there are many others in development too.

New Ips with new gameplay are risky. You could potentially have them bomb and then you invested a lot of money into something that wasn't a sure-thing.

Why doesn't ubisoft NOT make assassin's creed every year? Why doesn't Activision not make COD/Skylanders every year? They're risk averse.

Nintendo is probably the company who has released more IP's in the last 10 years... sadly, people only buy the main franchises...

just to mention a few:
-Trace Memory
-Drill Dozer
-Geist
-Chibi-Robo
-Hotel Dusk
-Disaster
-Endless Ocean
-Captain Rainbow
-Zengeki something
-Flingsmash
-Steel Diver
-The three "Operation Rainfall" RPG's
-Pushmo
-Dillon
-Wonderful 101

and I'm sure I'm missing a lot.

Have you heard of The Wonderful 101?

1) Cool new gameplay
2) Colorful, fun graphical style
3) Charming as hell (depends on your preference of charming lol)
4) Introduction of new 'characters'
5) A new IP that's also a system exclusive!

Many games like Splatoon get prototyped at Nintendo all the time. So they likely chose this idea out from the herd because it would both cater to necessary markets and give employees something really unique to work on.

Then remove ones not made by EAD. It's not really moving goal posts either I just hope you see the difference between EAD (Splatoon) and the titles you listed above.

Exactly. People bitch and moan about this but don't even support the games that come out.

It's funny that Splatoon actually started as another Mario game. Props to them for taking a little more risks. Definitely looks like a lot of fun!

Can we wait and see how it sells first?

I'm as excited as the next guy about splatoon but Nintendo is a business first and foremost.

Because nobody will buy them.

One and done. I was going to say this.

Don't get me wrong, Splatoon looks like it might be kind of a neat distraction, but I'm expecting it to sell like crap and its online community to be non-existent after the first couple weeks.

Nintendo never stopped as we had this all throughout the wii and ds lifespans.

They do bring out new IPs more often than people think, or at least facilitate them. Wonderful 101, Steel Diver, Pushmo, Code Name Steam, Bravely Default, are some recent and upcoming examples.

Splatoon will sell well. No other newly introduced IP by Nintendo has had quite the reception that Splatoon did. Codename STEAM, Project Guard, Project Robot, etc. all kind of flopped--we don't hear much about them. The very same day Splatoon was announced, however, we got tons of fan art, tons of hopeful speculations, tons of interest in general. If Nintendo continues to market this and support it, the community will buy into it. It fills a genre gap in Nintendo's brand.

Throw in Amiibo support, and it'll definitely fly.

This is speculation of course. But I'd bet on this.

so, if it's not EAD, they don't count?

Well I consider Nintendo (EAD+some others like Retro) above everyone else in this industry. I want to see new IP's from them instead of second class outsourced projects. Which can be fine too but let's be honest about the big differences between the two.

I just think Splatoon looks hell of a lot better and fresher than the games you listed. Yeah I know opinions and all.

One and done.

People complain about lack of new IPs on Nintendo consoles, games like Wonderful 101 and Splatoon are made and sell 10 copies, and the cycle repeats.
One is a game from a third party with a niche audience, the other is a game supervised by one of Nintendo's oldest creative head.

And it's not even out yet. Why do you think it will be comparable in sales and general success (creating a fanbase, etc) with W101?

I think the OP's question could be targeted at the game industry as a whole, and the answer is obvious. New IP is a risk. It's unknown to the market, and without a name brand to attach to the box it's hard to get casual consumers attention.

Same thing with the movie industry.

I'm really excited for Splatoon and it sounds like it's right in line with Nintendo's audience. It also looks like it'll be getting a big marketing push, so I expect it to sell relatively well.

Garage is Nintendo's best friend.

They're taking care to foster young talent within their ranks and it's already delivering.

Because nobody will buy them.

This, people care about the Marios, Pokemons, Zeldas, Donkey Kongs, Kirbys, Yoshis, Smash Bros, and Mario Karts - that is more than enough to be satisifed especially with each IP having multiple games or spinoffs.

Cant blame them!

of course, I can't argue against your opinion... it's just the fact that you're calling games like W101, Disaster, Xenoblade and Hotel Dusk "second class" that made me re-realize why we can't have nice things on Nintendo consoles.

fuck.
