Yeah, this is a good description. Plastic anime dolls. Definitely a departure even from the original Xenoblade Chronicles.
No, there a departure even from the original. I've seen plenty of Japanese style character designs. And these are bad, and absolutely clash with the rest of the visual style, which is pretty realistic.
Good God, man. You might want to find something better to do.

Opinions opinions opinions. You might want to respect the studio's artistic vision and wait untill you get to play and experience the final product before you start whining. You oughtta be happy and respectful towards Nintendo that we're getting a game like this.

If I ever post something in Japanese which I don't understand, please BAN me.
I hope keeping track of sidequests is much easier this time around. Just telling me where they are at certain times would be useful rather than just telling me I could find them somewhere on the whole region's map.

I agree. That was the reason why i didn't do much side quests in Xenoblade. I was in that area searched around everywhere and couldn't find whatever i needed and said ah fuck it and moved on.

I'm sorry, i don't find static lighting, ps2 level character models, and grass made out of sprites impressive, shadows not reacting to light shouldn't exist in a 2015 game.

Hey its ninjablade

Newsflash: the Wii U isn't as powerful as the PS4 or X1.
That's not even the best thing about it. X has a dynamic day and night cycle and deferred lighting, so nothing static about it. The left foot of a character in X probably has more polygons than a whole character in any PS2 open world game. And foliage as dense as the one found in X would be pretty much impossible to realize using anything other than billboards. That's why FFXIII had almost no foliage whatsoever and the foliage in GTA5 was very sparse in comparison. And I'll take billboards over flat ground textures with three random blades of grass every few meters any day of the week.

explain why the shadows never react to lighting in every trailer, the game is clearly is not using dynamic lighting like in GTAV or RDR, and about the character models, they don't exactly look like a ps2, but they look like shit some of the worse i have seen in a long time.

He ought to don a traditional Kimono, bow, and use honorifics, too.

Look at the picture on the site http://xenobladex.jp/
See that giant mech next to the player characters? That's what the game is scaled for which is likely why the characters are low poly. All the enemies look great so far too.

It ultimately doesn't matter with the rest of the game looking amazing, but maaaan those faces. "Remember that super ugly facial technique we used in Xenosaga 1 that everyone hated? Fuck it, do it again. Kids love them animes.

I think this sums up my problems with the character design. It's really jarring coming off of Xenoblade 1 which didn't play up the anime thing as much in the artwork.

I'm also really disappointed that Iwata decided to focus on doing tasks for locals in the Direct. That is not the appeal of Xenoblade, and if he doesn't understand that, I worry greatly for this game.

Please explain to me what "lighting never reacts to shadows" is supposed to mean first. Because looking at the footage, I don't see it. People cast shadows on the environment and the environment casts shadows on people.

And the character models are pretty good for an open world game as far as I can tell. You're free to shit on the character design all you want of course.

static lighting is kinda like having the lighting be part of the texture on an object. So, you walking in between a light source and an object being lit won't cause a shadow to fall on the object, because the fact that the object is lit up is built into the surface of the object. Objects don't cast shadows based on where the light source is.

With dynamic lighting, the light and shadows are controlled by where the light is coming from. A good example is your flashlight. With dynamic lighting on, you will see the shadows of everything you look at move around as you move because you flashlight is casting light on them from a different place as you move. Dynamic lighting adds to the realism of a scene, and really adds to the creepiness of a room as you walk through it with your flashlight.

basically just watch some footage of GTAV or RDR, watch how shadows react to light, then compare it to X, the difference is night and day..

I hate these character designs so much. They went back to those awful Anime doll characters they used in the Xenosaga series. Why? This game is called Xenoblade, not Xenosaga. The two females are the worst, like living plastic dolls. They look terrible, and so out of place in the otherwise mostly realistic style of the game.
Xenoblade didn't have the best designs ever but they were a million times better than the X characters. They didn't look like aliens or living dolls.:
I also miss the lush colors and the whimsical settings that Xenoblade had. Hopefully there'll still be areas similar to this in the game:

I think XenoWii females were closer to XCX ingame characters than those artworks, imho. The artworks look different from this:
http://vignette3.wikia.nocookie.net/xenoblade/images/3/3c/Fiora_speed_v.jpg/revision/20120504131735

About the colors, I agree. But if you look at the initial area of XenoWii, you don't see all that variety of situations, environments, colors, etc...
I think that we should wait (in-game, no spoiler!) to see all other XCX areas for a proper comparison.
The main area is pretty "realistic", environment-wise, but still gorgeous under different climatic conditions (we saw various of them, from Treehouse demo or different trailers)

As I don't have time to start with the gigantic project it would be to finish this game together with the fact that I have no plans to buy a Wii-u to play it (too high a cost for a single game: only FFXV makes my cost/benefit calculations go that astray), I usually watch X news in the worst possible location. Downloading it on my cellphone to go watch it in a rat infested garbage dump. That or I drive my pencil into my hand in order to create associations in my brain between X and excruciating pain. All this is done to restrict the nearly euphoric surge of hype one gets when watching a new trailer for this game.

but the music really sucks... the ending of that song that was just released... wtf where they thinking....

I'm seeing a lot of "damn the environment looks good, but man, the characters are fugly as heck" comments. Its like you guys never played any jrpgs before. Its an artstyle popular in japan. Maybe you guys just prefer realistic looking faces. Ill never understand that preference though, they look so bland and uninspiring.

I love lots of Japanese artstyle and anime. This games characters look like ass.

Hahaha, ninjablade is thinking he needs to teach wsippel about dynamic lighting. Lol.

Failing to point an example for his theories, of course.

I still have no idea what you want, because the lighting in X is dynamic. That's why I was confused by your statement.

Likewise you might want to respect other people's opinions. I never shit on anybody who liked the models.

New LA?

The setting seems all over the place, too. It reminds me of Star Ocean 4 a little bit. Space travel will obviously be a thing, but it's pretty jarring going from beautiful open fantasy fields to a modern suburban city. Using that modern of a setting is a really, really hard thing to get right in a JRPG. The only example I can think of doing it right was Shadow Hearts.

Again, even if the story completely shits the bed, this game will be worth it for the gameplay alone. I'm just skeptical about some stuff.

I think that is a reasonable suspicion to have at this point. But, prior to playing Xenoblade (which I haven't finished yet) I had the same suspicion about the "open world". It is also a very very hard thing to get right in a JRPG. I still remained unconvinced even after the reviews came in and praised it.

Then I played it and felt like they really did a great job with it... especially considering the hardware. But even with hardware out of the equation, it was no small feat what Monolith Soft accomplished with XBC. So while I find your skepticism to be completely warranted and rational, they also deserve a vote of confidence. XBC had some pretty disparate environments that clashed, yet all worked in context at the same time. There's no reason to suspect that they don't know what they're doing given their recent output.

Put me the camp that thinks the art and general aesthtic is amazing, but the character models are hideous. Xenoblade didn't have that doll look. Still while it's disappointing, it doesn't make me want the game any less.

And please handle the quests better than the first game. I liked the web/chain of related quests in the first game and the other similar ones that were meaningful in a way. I could do without the fetch and exterminate ones the guards give you though

There is over 90 minutes of treehouse footage to comb over from E3 this year. Everything I'm watching seems to indicate dynamic lighting.

Not your fault. I think you have to be wearing his special trolls-tinted glasses to be able to see what he's talking about...

I rewatched some footage and can't for the life of me tell what he's talking about either.

The fact that he can't tell the difference is mind boggling to me, since he suppose to be a tech head.
Oh, I absolutely can tell the difference between static and dynamic lighting. But as I just wrote: The lighting in X is dynamic, so sorry, in this particular case, I obviously don't see the difference. Because there is none.

Here:

hdtown4zsdt.gif

Notice the large alien dude walking under the palm tree? Notice how the palm tree clearly casts a shadow on him? If the lighting were indeed static and the shadow map was baked into the texture, that wouldn't happen. You can also see it in the front as the black haired girl walks past the lantern, and again with the character further in the back right next to the street sign.

Also, if the fact that the shadows are almost exactly under the characters bothers you, look at the clock in the upper right corner.

How would you compare X to FF13 ... a ps3 game?

Guys it's Ninjablade he got banned on a different forum I used to visit because of his antics.

He'll be banned eventually if he keeps if up. Don't let him get to you.

I do think they should work on the models a bit though. Monado model levels to Xenoblade model jump would be nice to see.

First Bayo 2, now XBX. I´m waiting for you in the Zelda U Thread next Year to tell me again that the WiiU suck and can not compare with PS4one :)

get over it, most People like what they see in X and fun fact....
they own a PS4

People in this thread need to go back and watch an OG xenoblade cutscene before saying how shitty these ones are in comparison.

I really don't see the problem. People don't like the eyes of two of the characters of an unfinished rpg supposedly 5 times the size of xenoblade, therefore, character design is the worst ever. Give me a break. Say you don't like the eyes but enough of the hyperbole. Thanks.

I just want to be hyped. Wont somebody be hyped with me?
