Performance Analysis: Assassin's Creed Unity (Digital Foundry)

Really seems like a technical mess all around. I'm not sure why they would push for such high crowds and AI assuming that's what's causing the issues. Just turn it down. Solid performance comes before everything else

This might be the first multi-platform game I end up getting on the Xbox One.

I'm definitely looking forward to the full digital foundry analysis.

The reason is probably pretty simple. Being a CPU-bound unoptimized mess of a game, Ubisoft did the easy thing by not leveraging any of the PS4's extra GPGPU Compute headroom and relying solely on the CPU, especially given that they didn't utilize those extra GPU resources for upping the resolution.

This gives the X1 a minor performance advantage, since their CPU is clocked 150 mhz faster than the PS4's, everything else pretty much being equal.

They didn't have time to utilize compute on any platform.

Yeah, its looking like it'll be very easy to skip this indeed.
They shouldnt have made Rogue and Unity at the same time, that is if the extra manpower would have saved this game, but seems their priorities were wrong on this game from the start sadly.

Game is crap framerate wise either way it seems.

Never thought I'd see better performance due to the X1's CPU.

They had to cram all those NPCs in didn't they...just stuff them in like fish in a barrel.

If it honestly was CPU bound, then they should have just upped the PS4 resolution which shouldn't have really impacted the framerate.

It's easier to throw up your hands into the air and claim platform parity than to actually attempt even more graphical optimization when you're already pulling in a billion people to get the game's framerate stable as-is.

But there are a lot of things you can do, like animation, collision detection and physics. All these tie to their 10K people crowds which would have put a lot less strain on the CPU when in large crowds. From what were seeing it looks like they did all that on the CPU and left the GPU to only draw stuff (which still doesn't explain the lower res than).
Ok ok. But with this superb cpu 'advantage' you can get 1-2 fps of advantages not 5-10 fps.

Not saying anything, but three games with MS marketing deal...

"not saying anything but CONSPIRACY $$ YALL"

To say nothing of AW and Evolve being lower resolution/situational and this game looking like a hot fucking mess all around.

I hate how the main character looks. His hair especially. Guy looks like a knob.

Luckily you can remove his face via glitches. Surely someone will find one for the hair.

Yeah but the point is that if the cpu limits framerate why the ps4 version is not running at 1080p since the gpu is more powerfull ?

I agree. That makes no sense. It should be 1080p on PS4 with a slightly lower framerate then the 900p Xbox One version.

What I really can't understand, given how relatively poor the cpu's are in Xbox One and PS4. Is why the decision to focus the game on so many crowds of people when the programmers would have known that it would have been a poor fit for those consoles. As a developer, you should architect a game with a view to using the strengths of a console. Not it's weaknesses.

Stupid Ubisoft.

So, I should play the game on X1 and watch the cutscenes on PS4. Got it.
Actually the article got me more excited about the game, it seems it truly delivers nextgen visuals.

man, this game was sexist, incorporated bad business offers, is buggy and runs terribly on PC. Ubisoft, what happened? lol. yet they still manage to be profitable. I can't wait for UBI and EA's demise.

Wow looks like I just can't assume that everything will play better on my PS4. I have both systems but like to have one go to console where my friends can expect me to be. Looks like I'll be all over the place with my games this gen. Disappointed Cerny.

Seems like a lot of us were right. Ubi just shat themselves technically with their development pipeline.

Game isn't finished. The poorly optimized game just runs slightly less worse on the XB1 because of the CPU difference. Should not have been released this early. They sure spent a lot of time getting those in app purchases working right though.

Xbox One is the better version?

Dat parity... Oh, Ubisoft.

Given the effects of the various twitter campaigns and PS4 winning over gamers' hearts and the controversy-hungry types on the internet, would Sony be daring enough to actually take action against Ubisoft publically to rally gamers even if it means losing out on (shitty quality) Ubi games? I highly doubt it but it be such pro-gamer/pro-consumer move, even if it meant PS fans missing out on a few titles.

Can't Sony overclock its CPU as well? that's a shame, it seems CPU, even moreso on PS4, is a huge bottleneck.

They shouldn't need to. The PS4 has additional CU's which can be dedicated to cpu tasks. This is perfect for NPC's, and would give the PS4 much more processing capacity then the XB1 while still having a GPU edge .

DF alluded to it in many ways but it looks like forced parity to me,,,

Not sure if serious

Sounds like the XB1 was the lead platform with little to no optimization for the PS4. Quite a shame.

That doesn't even make much sense. How exactly can they optimize for xbone and not for Ps4?

They use similar cpus, gpus, etc. The only differences are actually against the xbone where you have to optimize esram usage (but even if you do, that would benefit the Ps4 build to some degree as well).

Unless they purposely made the game run like ass on Ps4 there's so little they could do to optimize to Xbone that wouldn't also be useful for Ps4.

For a game designed from the ground up for Next Gen, this is sad. Especially sad given how much more powerful the PS4 is than the XB1.

This is a prime example on why the Ps4 isn't more powerful across the board, there are workloads where xbone will outperform it.

Yeah, I agree. If the XB1 does indeed have a slightly faster CPU, then the framerate difference makes sense, and it should have been accounted for by toning back the NPC count or something. But, if they do indeed look identical, then that means they really did just lock things down and didn't even bother using the extra GPU power. What a shitload of fuck.

If the game is dropping frames it might mean the gpu already doesn't have enough time to render the whole scene.

In the cutscenes, which are largely gpu bound there are some drops on Ps4 as well, so they might not have that many gpu power to spare too.

I bought the X1 version just because I was already on an X1 kick, and I love the controller. But also because I heard there would be no difference between the two. Normally I would get this on PS4. But this is insane. How can the PS4 version be worse, when clearly PS4 is the better technical system. I just don't get it.

Well its a good thing I went with X1 then

No it isn't. Going for any version of the game is a bad thing. It's still shit.

Higher clocked CPU.

There is one good thing to come from all this and that's the fact that it shows devs still have headroom. Compute functions on the GPU are rarely (if ever) utilised right now and once development pipelines get used to using it more to offload tasks, games will be better. Just hope it's sooner rather than later!

Off-loading to GPGPU is not an easy task, especially if You wrote Your code for CPUs already.
Its a solution, but its not easy solution.

That's really disgusting, I hope no one touches the PS4 version with a 10 foot pole. Totally unacceptable on Ubi's part.

That's delusional. Sony need Ubisoft more than Ubisoft need Sony.
