343i Matchmaking / Launch Issues Update

11.17 8:00PM Update CONTENT UPDATE DELAYED
This week’s content update, which was originally scheduled for release this Wednesday, 11/19, will now be releasing later this week to allow for additional fixes, as well as the completion of the testing and certification process.

This content update includes a variety of fixes across the title, including Matchmaking performance issues, general UI and game stability improvements, as well as fixes for game-game specific issues in Halo: CE, Halo 2, and Halo 2: Anniversary, and more. The full patch notes will be posted later this week, in advance of the content update release.

Thank you for your continued patience.

Latest Update 11.15 7:00PM
I’d like to provide the latest on Halo: The Master Chief Collection, and what the team is working on to address the issues you’re experiencing.

Looking at our data logs, server-side adjustments that we have made over the past 24 hours have shown a 20% increase in server connectivity. However, we are well aware that performance is not where it needs to be. Resolving Matchmaking issues also requires client-side fixes, which require a content update. The client side update, which focuses on Matchmaking performance, non-matchmaking bugs, and a variety of title-specific issues, has been completed and is going through testing and certification.

We are currently targeting a release of Wednesday 11/19 for this content update.

We know the current Matchmaking experience is frustrating, and we continue to have various teams working 24/7 to isolate and resolve the issues to provide the best experience as soon as possible. We are going to continue to optimize the matchmaking experience after next week's content update, and make further adjustments as needed. We thank you for your continued patience.

11.14 6:00 PM Update (88MB Download)
The next time you log into Halo: The Master Chief Collection, you will be prompted to download a content update. This particular content update addresses campaign, UI, and some Matchmaking and party issues. As we mentioned yesterday, a larger Matchmaking performance-focused content update is currently planned for release next week.

For now, here is a change list of what was included in today’s content update:

Fixed a variety of issues that caused players within the same Matchmaking party to be placed on different teams. In rare cases, this issue may still occur, and we are investigating additional fixes.
Fixed a Matchmaking issue with behind the scenes team skill matching, allowing team skill matching to be more accurate in both ranked and unranked playlists.
Fixed an issue where the campaign HUD did not reset from level to level with scoring or time HUD enabled. This will clear out the full visualization of level segments, which was previously not reset.
Fixed a variety of issues with campaign leaderboards and scoring HUD, so now when scores are posted, score, kills, time, deaths, and penalties will be reported correctly for new mission leaderboard entries. We are still working on additional fixes for playlist leaderboard entries.
Fixed an issue with competitive HUD time split. Now, when players have competitive time HUDs on with a rival set, they will see per-segment split times for whether they are ahead or behind at each segment.
We will provide further info about additional server side and content updates in the coming days. Thank you for your continued patience.

11.14 1:00 PM Update
This morning, we rolled out tweaks that should begin to further improve the Matchmaking experience, including:
Dedicated server stability improvements
Laid the groundwork for upcoming Matchmaking content updates, including improvements to the team selection process
Details on the 11.14 Content Update:
This evening, we will be releasing a content update that addresses a variety of community-reported issues. This content update addresses campaign, UI, and some Matchmaking party issues, but will not address Matchmaking performance. As we mentioned yesterday, a larger Matchmaking performance-focused content update is currently planned for release next week. We will have the full details of this update when the update goes live late afternoon (PST).
Please stay tuned to this thread and official channels for this afternoon's update. We thank you for your continued patience.

11.13 9:00 PM Update
We’ve been working at and on various issues all day and users are seeing some improvements – and here’s a wonky but useful tip that should significantly improve some players’ experiences:

When you are in the matchmaking state, looking for players, make sure that the column on the right is headed by the string, “In Lobby” - Usually with gray boxes beneath, until a whole game is gathered.

If it’s in any other state, or you don’t see that it says “In Lobby” as pictured, you will not successfully join a game. Simply press “B” to back out to the main menu, then go back into Multiplayer and Find Game. You should see “In Lobby” and have a much better chance of finding a good session. These shots demonstrate “good” and “bad” conditions you should be attempting to get to.

Awkward? Yes. Sorry! But simple and a tiny band aid while we work on the bigger medicine. More news as we fix more stuff.

Matchmaking is pretty messed up right now, 343 has this to say.

Statement
Since the launch of Halo: The Master Chief Collection, we've received several, well deserved, complaints related to slow matchmaking and other issues. From everyone at 343 Industries, we are truly sorry and feel your frustration. You deserve better and we are working day and night to find solutions as quickly as possible, with our first priority focused on matchmaking improvements.
Tomorrow morning (Wednesday morning Pacific Time) we plan to roll out a number of server updates to help improve matchmaking. Again, these are server-side fixes, so you won't need to take a content update or reboot your console; you should see the effects right away.
In addition, we are targeting another release for this weekend, which will address a number of other community priorities. An unrelated issue with services is also causing achievements to not unlock correctly, and we realize this just makes it all feel a bit worse.
A game as large as Halo: The Master Chief Collection has a massive surface area, and while we made every effort to have the best launch possible for our fans, issues surfaced with launch and we're committed to improving this as fast as possible and get you all into matches. We're committed to improving things as fast as possible so you can have the Halo experience you've been waiting for.
Your feedback has been helpful for us in isolating issues, so please keep the input coming. We thank you for your continued patience and understanding while we work through these challenges. The development team at 343 Industries worked insanely hard to create Halo: The Master Chief Collection for you, and we won't stop until it's worthy of your passion for our franchise.

Also on Waypoint forums list of bugs
Matchmaking bugs:
- If you switch between the playlists you lose your party most of the time. You can't take your party and often don't get asked if you want to.
- Sometimes the teams get shuffled during the loading screen. E.g If you are with friends in the "red" team while voting for the map it doesn't mean you are in the same team when the game starts. "Team formulation" seems very broken (More...).
- Colors/Emblems, etc. is not available in Matchmaking and you just get a generic/random emblem.
- It doesn't give priority to your party when creating the teams. I've played about 10 Team Slayer games and most of the time was in the opposite team of my friend.
- Big Team Battle description says it's 8vs8, but it's only 6vs6.
- Rank up bug that let's you get the highest rank via a Matchmaking/Custom Game bug. Details: http://redd.it/2lyo3c
Custom Game bugs:
- Team colours shuffle after each game. And because changing team colours is now a 4-5 step process this is very annoying.
- Settings shuffle if you make some changes after the game and you have to setup everything again.
- You can't join a game after it started. It always says it's full, even if it isn't.
- The game gives the host randomly to players depending on the game. We played a few H2A games with a perfect and lag-free host. When we switched to H2C with the same players the game was suddenly unplayable, because it gave the host to someone else.
Other problems / missing features:
- Game chat randomly doesn't work for some players. Many people meet in parties.
- Players randomly disconnect from the game.
- The game freezes sometimes during the loading screen. Often after a game ends.
- You can't see the ping in matchmaking or custom game. In any game. This is really important.
- Changing the team colour is now a 4-5 step process. We were able to press "x" and could right away change the team. Now you have to press "X" to open the roster. Scroll to your gamertag and select it with "A". Then choose "Change Color" from four different options with "A". Then select the colour and leave the menu again.
- Loading times for maps seem extremely long. It also doesn't seem to preload the map like it always did.
- The roster doesn't work right. It often doesn't show anyone or only a few of the people that are online and sometimes you can't invite players. Sometimes the game get's unresponsive/freezes after using the roster or a snapped app.
- You can't see anymore who's talking in game. This used to be an important feature in previous games. Now you are in matchmaking with new players and just have to "guess".
- You can't see who is wearing a mic unless they speak.
- Less customization options for game type settings in custom games.
- There should be an option to turn off (or at least lower the volume of) the menu music. It used to be only in the main menu in the past, but now it's everywhere and just far too loud.
- The roster always shows 1/16 players for every group/friend, even if they play with more people,
Game Specific Bugs & Single Player:
Halo CE:
- Audio in Single Player is flawed. Loops sometimes forever/overlapping/different tracks playing at the same time/wrong sounds (More..).
- Completed Single Player games sometimes don't save.
- When playing co-op campaign, it seems impossible to finish a mission. The game is always disrupted with disconnects (More...).
H2A:
- Campaign seems to randomly crash when attempting to start a mission.
H3:
- One user reports that he can't play Halo 3 at all. No single or multiplayer. Game freezes at the loading screen. As this happens only with one user so far we need more people confirming this here...
Mixed:
- Cross game singleplayer playlist skips mission (specifically Mission 6 on "Normal")
- The Master Chief Collection sometimes responds poorly to snapping. This behavior has exhibited crashing, freezing, and persistent significant frame drops.
- These are only a few things that happened to me and the players I played with last night. Please add more.

PAULINK

I microwave steaks.
Might as well just wait to play on the weekend, it's not like I haven't played these games before... still disappointing though that the launch would be having these issues.

So basically... Thanks for beta testing the game for us!

I feel for you guys who got this. After the driveclub rubbish (I gave up after a few days and just played FH2 exclusively) I wouldn't wish this crap on anyone.

Nice to get a response with at least some timeframe in mind. Hope it gets fixed in a timely manner but I guess we'll see

I was feeling bad that I wouldn't be able to play this game until the weekend but looks like I lucked out.

It would've been one thing if every third or so match crashed, that would've been an understandable load issue. For it to not work at all is fucking pathetic and there is no excuse.

How many days were there server issues with Halo matchmaking?

Uh nope. Shit post right here.

There is evidence of crunch in the final product but I've got faith that 343i will make it right.

Shit sucks right now though.

"Blah blah blah blah blah blah blah blah blah blah blah blah blah sorry not sorry."

Exactly what do you want them to say? "Sorry the game hasn't been working for a day, this statement will double as my letter of resignation." Or "Sorry there are some glitches, to earn your forgiveness you will now all receive a free copy of Halo 5."?

Whole game is completely fucked.

What an absolute disaster.

I'm sure I'm not the only one who bought the console specially for this game.

The real shame is that when this thing does work, its fantastic.

MS pissing off a lot of people with this shit show of a game.

Based 343. I'm glad I didn't get this at launch. Hopefully Microsoft and 343 realize the importance of launching a massive fix and redeeming themselves ASAP.

I'd think some concessions should be made to the people who have bought/played the game at launch. It should be easy to scrape the database to see who applies (i.e. everyone who bought the game digitally at or before launch, or everyone who has an achievement in the launch week - the second stipulation helps disc owners become a part of any concessions).

Again, based 343, because it looks like they will try to fix the major issues affecting this game's abysmal launch. But it's not acceptable that people can spend $60-$70 for a game that was essentially in a broken state. Hopefully in one month MCC will be a rock solid package - but for the people who expected a rock solid package TODAY, and spent their hard-earned money accordingly, I think some concessions should be made.

If I didn't just have fun playing Halo 3 campaign with my friends for the past 3 hours I would be mad.

I'll be mad tomorrow after I've slept off the laughs.

It eels worse than drive club, this is fucking halo and it wasn't given the launch it deserved. Fucking halo 2 pretty much invented match making on console ten years later and they launch something in this state which is fucked match making wise, I just can't I'm losing faith in 343i this following a pretty lacklustre halo 4.

I expect the game to work.

Surface of Me

I'm not an NPC. And neither are we.
Sucks that the game didn't work at launch, I expect better for Halo 5. Hopefully most of the MP issues can be resolved with the server side stuff they are doing tomorrow.

Are the armors now preset for H3 and H4? Didn't see a way to customize myself like I could before.

Yes, that functionality has been removed. It's one of the most baffling omissions I've seen. I know 343 has FAR more pressing issues on their mind at the moment, but hopefully Frankie or somebody could answer this when they have the time; is it possible for armor customization to be patched in at a later date?

Will buy after some patches come through.

Also, if they ever make the announcement that they're making custom games get server support instead of P2P, I'll be eternally grateful

Matchmaking is already performing a lot better for me. I just played Halo 1 team slayer with some friends online on both Damnation and Hang 'em High and it was glorious.

I still don't get why Halo 1's playlist isn't up, though..

Ugh. Picked the game up today just to get the game and updates installed, but won't have Live til Thursday. Kind of happy I didn't get it at midnight with friends like planned, since I/we'd be incredibly frustrated with issues.

Hope they get things fixed semi-quick.

I will probably play this game for months to come if not years.
So some launch issues i can life with do hope they can fix it before the weekend.

Busy week so not a lot of time to game :(

No shit, we all do. But that doesn't mean it makes sense to write off their statement.

I think suspicion is fair though. If they can't release the game in a stable state, words aren't exactly going to reassure someone who feels like they wasted yet another $60.

all this talk about parties splitting and I cant even make a party. My friend and I have tried a total of 2 hours since last night to get in the same game, not happening.

This.

You can apologize all you want, but until I have a working game (meaning all of multiplayer), your words are useless to me. So far, I haven't been able to log into one matchmaking or non-matchmaking game. It's been two hours, after three hours of downloading the slow 20 gig upgrade.

Do you mean Driveclub?

If so I couldn't even tell you since after the 1st weekend I had it I didn't even try to boot up a multiplayer game.

I meant Halo. I keep seeing people comparing it to DC or even BF4 and I'm wondering just how long the Halo issues have been going on compared to those games.

Wasted? Do refunds no longer exist as a thing?

We had this problem earlier. A hard reboot of the Xbox allowed us to join a lobby together.

(hold power button for 10 seconds while console is on)

I'm actually not pissed off, I'm just playing campaigns for now. Multiplayer next week or so.

You guys should add a 30fps lock, though.

So....ask for a refund? Vote with your wallet and let them know exactly why you're asking for a refund.

I don't see your point. The game doesn't work as advertised (the online portion anyway) on launch day so the comparisons are more than valid. It doesn't matter if its 3 days, 7 days, 50 days or 100 days. The issue is exactly the same, the product was broken at launch.

How long it will take them to fix it remains to be seen. Even if they manage to fix it quicker than the other 2 games you mentioned it doesn't mean they deserve a medal of any sort.

I honestly feel really bad for 343 and I've been pretty unforgiving to them on their past actions. A launch like this is huge and I'm amazed I was even able to play at all last night at launch. And the games I played actually worked.

But because it's not perfect, people got their pitchforks out. Kinda fuckin ridiculous tbh.

I understand that online portions of a game can be funky and sometimes borderline broken on launch day. Shit happens, and so long as a fix is timely (within a day or two) I'm willing to look past any issues like this. If 343 really does fix most of the matchmaking issues tomorrow morning then I'll forgive and forget, but if I'm waiting until the weekend to play some Halo multiplayer than I'm going to be much less forgiving.

The way they worded their statement sounds a lot like that of Driveclub for some reason lol

Hope they get it sorted out quickly, so they can get working on orher fixes too.

There's a difference between not being perfect and literally being unplayable

Heaven forbid people expect to get what they paid for.

343 will fix the bugs, but they did fuck up the launch, and people have every right to complain
