Qatar: If you're gay, you should avoid the 2022 World Cup

I find it really disturbing how these certain Arab nations seem so prosperous and modern from the outside, but still remain so incredibly outdated and barbaric in terms of human rights

2022 seems like the perfect year to expect a gay football player from the highest professional level to finally have his coming out. What a glorious sight it would be if it would happen right in a stadium.

It's an overarching saying that can apply to whatever one comes up with. In this regard it is unfortunate but what is the alternative? Boycotting can only work if it were to happen in massive numbers but that doesn't seem to be the case and trying to gatecrash into these countries expecting them to change their ways to avoid human rights issues with tourists/fans is a pie in the sky fantasy atm and perhaps will only lead to violence.

How about they don't host a World (note that word) Cup if they aren't capable of tolerating other cultures for the duration of the event.

oh jesus should have heeded the warning about not reading the comments.

Oh yea, what a damn shame. Looks like even whilst bereft of anonymity the beliefs that suppress freedom of certain groups of people are being put on display.

I don't know, what was your point exactly? You were kind of vague.

My point is simple: Don't go hurting yourself (or worse) by being a daredevil in those countries if you're gay and feel like protesting. It is because being a tourist does not guarantee any form of safety from detainment, harassment and/or battery in those countries.

FIFA cares more about money than human rights; people ought to hit them where it hurts, i.e. boycott the game and if possible it should be done in large numbers. But given how Sochi turned out (despite many public figures such Stephen Fry urging sport governing bodies and public in general) I am not so confident that most people have it in them to resist the urge to sacrifice entertainment of that magnitude for human rights.

Almost lost it reading some of those comments. Half of those shit-heads are most certainly the "we should carpet bomb the Middle East" right-wingers. But here they are, running to defend Qatar for its "moral standards."

Money can't buy everything.

On the topic. I don't see why people travel to these events in the first place, it's crime infested no matter the country.

Isn't it incredible? I get upset but like, it's almost laughably sad how ridiculous and bitter some of the comments are.

It's oil money, none of these countries have gone through any of the steps that modern countries in Europe, Asia, and the Americas have to evolve into anything resembling a modern society. They are basically the same as they were 300 years ago except a few wealthy rulers and their clan get billions of dollars of free money from people driving cars around the world.

Yeah its fucked. But I guess hate for gays trumps hate for muslims?

So instead of admitting corruption, FIFA admits that they deliberately chose to have the event in a country who don't really give a damn about the treatment of fellow humans.

People should not go to this. Mainly because it sounds fucking barbaric, but it's also going to be a total bummer. Blistering heat and no beer.

And they openly treat humans like shit.

If it does end up going ahead in Qatar its going to be a total disaster. Hopefully eventually FIFA sees sense and moves it.

This shoudln't be news, it's a really intolerant region for homosexuals.

Equating the issues with the alcool ban is really offensive, but to be expected coming from the FIFA.

It's still crime infested. Especially for someone like me who lives in a little hole with 100k population.

London is one of the safest large cities in the world. And your original point was completely wrong - that's called shifting the goalposts.

The next two World Cups -- Russia in 2018 and Qatar in 2022 -- are in country's inhospitable to gay people. Soccer may be the be the "beautiful game," but the people running it are pretty ugly.

Goddammit

Im sorry that you got hurt over London, but no. Large cities are not safe. It being one of the safest "large cities" means jack.

I think I can understand the whole beer question since you know they have their traditions and all.

But homophobia is not the same as not selling alchool. They can't deny people of their basic rights like that and FIFA shouldn't condone any action that goes in that direction. Saying "you can't have sex here" is not the same as "we won't sell booze".

There's a limit when it comes to respect their traditions and maybe if they weren't ready for it they shouldn't be hosting an international event like this in the first place.

This is quite possibly going to be the worst World Cup ever.

I can't support this crap either... I really hope FIFA changes the location, but we all know that it's FIFA we are talking about.

While I do not agree with their ways, it is what it is and so when in Rome....
'When in Rome... don't be in Rome' I guess is the new saying? Not sure how one could turn off being gay in order to 'be like the Romans' in this case.

Not like many locals are going to see the inside of those stadiums, just the wealthy and migrant workers that built them, many of them dead.

Man, and I was excited for the World Cup being in the Middle East. Arabs are so fucking awful and have to ruin everything. I guess I was naive not to expect this :/

I hope you're being sarcastic, because otherwise you aren't any better than the anti-gay crowd.

Anyway, I look forward to the ensuing shitstorm that is the Qatar World Cup. It'll be one for the books, one way or the other.
