Dragon Age: Inquisition PC performance thread

Ok here we go:

3770K @ 4.2
Windforce 670GTX OCed 2GB
16GB RAM
WIn 8.1
1080p

Went all Ultra except post processing and Tesselation with 4x MSAA. The initial sequence played at around 35-40FPS. When I got to the second bigger section (Hinterlands? Something like that :p) I saw the FPS take a massive drop to around 30, sometimes down and sometimes up. I changed the settings then, and turned off MSAA entirely, but upped post-processing to Ultra. This basically gave me a 10+FPS boost and I can't notice much difference, so I am gonna stay this way. Definitely pushes my rig to the border though, its spewing heat like dragon farts. Maybe its time to treat myself to that 970 :p

Specs:

i7 3770k
16 GB DDR3 1866 RAM
GTX 780 ti 3GB
SSD main drive
1 TB spindle drive (game installed to this)
Nvidia 344.65 drivers

Settings:

2560x1440p
Bordless Window
Vsync off (not needed since borderless window ;) )
All set to Ultra
Post processing AA set to max (WHERE's my SMAA?? I think this is just FXAA)
No MSAA

Benchmark seems to be broken. During normal gameplay I get 65 FPS+. During cutscenes it's a solid 30 FPS according to my FPS counter, BUT the cutscenes stutter. Watchable, but not a good experience

Also mouse and keyboard controls are... I don't even know what happenned. The only reasonable conclusion is that Bioware is trolling PC gamers. There's no way in hell, that if there was even a single PC gmaer in Bioware's employ, that this would have gone out the door the way it did.

Tactical camera is unworkable. Movement and mouse look is awkward. Defualt keybindings appear to have been RANDOMLY set. Jeebus A and D are rotation on the tacticla cam while W and S are up and down by default. SO WEIRD!

I'm playing with gamepad until they fix this.

The game, BTW runs and looks WAY better than the Xbone version. IQ is significantly improves. The only exception is the performance of the cutscenes.

I'm really happy with the way I've got the game running now. By starting the game with the command line switches -GameTime.MaxSimFps 30 -GameTime.ForceSimRate 30 -GameTime.MaxVariableFPS 30, everything runs uniformly, and the cutscenes don't seem to stutter as much (I believe the Sim options are the reason for this). I'd love it if everything would run at 60 FPS, but it seems like the cutscenes require more juice than the gameplay, so even after unlocking them, they'd dip into the 30s and 40s on the same settings with which I could get 60 during gameplay, which was no good for me. Super happy to have consistent performance now, it stops me from getting motion sickness and I can concentrate on the game now.
Thanks for this.

I'll try out locked 30 as well.

Hmm.. I should try borderless. Helped a lot with Ryse and Far Cry, maybe it will give me an extra FPS boost here?

Is anyone else suffering from really bad screen flickering when using SLI?

It's not exclusive to Dragon Age, but a lot of games now are causing really bad blue screen flickering.

Solid 60 FPS @ 1920x1080

Maxed settings w MSAAx2

2600K
GTX 970
16 GB

Buttery smooth - so much better than the Xbone preview experience I had.

Right on. I'm almost the same except I have a 2500k @ 4.2. I'll be trying it tomorrow. Didn't have time to mess around with vpns tonight.

:( my GTX 970 and FX 8320 can only get 60fps with everything maxed excluding AA. But in populated areas it fluctuates 45-60 fps. It mostly stays at 60fps though. I might need to OC :/

Thanks a million. Doing this solved my problem as well. I was forcing 30fps through the resolution/refresh setting which made it feel really sluggish and inconsistent. Using your command lines really made the game sing and stick at 30. Much appreciated.

Probably. Earlier when I was playing around with settings, I restarted my game but forgot I had turned my VPN off and the game re-locked. Though you might be able to just unlock the game and throw Origin in offline mode and not have to fuss with it.

I restarted the game several times today with no issue long after turning off the VPN. But I left origin open. oh well, no big deal, just a minor annoyance

Do you know if this allows for Mantle to be enabled? If not, I'll probably just wait till the next full-release driver.

If you have a GCN card, it should?

Just remember to do a full uninstall (and restart) of your old drivers first before installing the new ones to prevent possible conflicts.

Anybody with an i3 try this out, particularly an Ivy Bridge one? I'm interested if an i3-2100 with HT will be enough for the game. Does it absolutely need those four cores?

so everything max'd out on a 980 @ 2650 res

min fps 30.9
average fps 37.9

Plays nice... For some reason it really reminds me of the new Final Fantasy e3 video

That's actually really disappointing. This game isn't even a graphical power house. This just seems like poor optimization. Barely keeping 30fps on a GTX 980 is ridiculous.

I know his resolution, I play at that resolution. My GTX Titan can handle Shadow of Mordor, which I think is more expansive and beautiful than Inquisition on ultra textures and I get 45fps min.

Even so, I saw benchmarks showing ~48fps maxed out @ 1080p with a GTX 980. 48fps, only? I'm sorry but my point still stands, this game is not optimized.

well I cant help you then, I think Inquisition looks fucking gorgeous. is it the "cartooniness" / colors that make you say it doesnt look good? Im not taking a jab at you, im honestly asking

Oh no I think the game looks good, don't get me wrong, I just don't think based on everything I've seen it doesn't make sense a GTX 980 can't hit 60fps @ 1080p, while Far Cry 4 (as another example) can hit it, rather easily maxed out.

but he's not playing at 1080p :(

edit: oh wait you are talking about benchmarks. well I dont know, Im hitting 80+ on my 970s with everything on ultra, but granted, I havent gotten to a big open area like Hinterlands yet. Ill report back tomorow :)

Yes, but I'm talking about the benchmarks shown where they are hitting an average of ~48fps @ 1080p maxed out.

EDIT: Please do, I'm really curious what you will be getting. I assume you are playing maxed out x4msaa @ 1080p?

yup all on ultra and 1080p, borderless windowed getting 70-80fps on the starting bit before any of the big areas... which like an idiot I didnt even think about, and now im worried. If it drops bellow 60 in the hinterlands, what should I sacrifice first again? Tesselation or msaa?

Adding it as a non steam shortcut didn't work for me, it would be really nice to get it working :/

I got the steam overlay working. Exit origin and add origin.exe as a non steam game. Then play that and when origin opens any game you open will have the steam overlay. Works with all origin games.

I'm getting an intermittent freezing during all portions of gameplay, even in menus. I have the latest drivers (stock 660) installed and it only does this to me in DA:I. I was averaging around 35-40fps with a mixture of high/ultra settings with some effects turned off running at 1080p. Feels pretty crappy to have the screen lock up for a split second every now and then regardless of what I'm doing :(.

Mantle support is in the game through the Display options. You can choose either DX11 or Mantle. It runs smoothly for me on Mantle with a 7950

Anybody feels like the blacks are crushed in that game? Other games on my monitor are fine but with DAI it feels like I'm playing on XB1 lol.

Also.. Damn, I really need to disable those Origin Achievement sounds..yikes.

Edit: I'm actually not seeing an option for that?

not sure what I did, but now Steam launches the game's exe directly, and I have Origin set to close on exit which makes it that much nicer.

Ok guys serious question here about my rig.

660 ti
8gb ram
Phenom 955 @3.8ghz

Now realistically, would it be better for me to get better peformance out of my pc or should I stick with the ps4?

Does it do it if you turn down texture detail slightly? Could be hittting the limits of your VRAM.

I have my textures set to high which should be the upper limit for me but still doable, let me show you my settings. I have a stock 3570k/16gigs of ram and the aforementioned stock 660gt. Btw that screen shot shows textures on ultra but I did set it to high and test it. Sorry for the confusion.

how much ram does your video card have? I think you may need to turn down your texture qualities

You cant...

That's really dumb. I removed the sound file from the "sounds" folder. I'll see if it actually fixes it or just crashes.

You could also disable the in-game overlay.
