Digital Foundry vs GTAV on XONE - performance analysis

I mean, certainly the Xbox One is a weaker console. But the game does still look good and has the same resolution/performance.

Holy hell I don't know which version to get :(

Getting FC4 and DA:I on PS4 since those are (probably) both higher res/more stable FR on PS4 and I don't really plan to do much online stuff with them (despite liking the X1 controller better for FPS)

But I really want to get GTA on X1 for the controller/online/friends :/ But if the graphical differences are pretty big then I'll feel off when playing the X1 version...

Ughhhh.

I guess I'll wait for the frame-rate analysis but I doubt it'll be better on the X1 version. That and the colors being washed out on either version could sway me.

This game doesn't use the upscaler. One thing I have noticed is that games on the XBO are really focusing on having colors "pop".

PS there is a contrast and brightness button on most Tv's.

Its pretty easy to adjust. You cannot adjust for crushed blacks though if its at source.

I'm going X1 for the same reasons. Controller and friends. Anything people have brought up so far takes nothing away from the X1 version enough for me.

Fake. The ratio on map is all wrong. Left screen looks like it's from 360.

Who made this comparison?

I stand corrected. Difference is minuscule.

LOL! You know that can adjust color in your TV, right?

I find it interesting that Digital Foundry has become an authority on technical differences to the point that people with both consoles will decide which version to get based on DF "findings".... (More so than ever before I mean....)

Should work just fine for Eurogamer.

You just blew up a safe. Is there no smoke lingering in the scene on PS4?

If you just stand around, does it clear?

My X1 build isn't washed out like that...I do remember a lot of haze/smoke in that room though.

Edit**

Just checked and I recorded that scene. There's a ton of smoke in the room. My colors aren't as washed out, but the room is still smoldering on X1.

Maybe it's a good idea not to come to conclusions if one doesn't even know what is happening in a scene? ;)

ok... they didn´t blow up a safe here..

the xbox version is still foggy... ??

The performance issue they talk about reminds me of the Destiny alpha/beta where the framerate apparently was stable but judder was present. I'm seeing a ton of that in the PS4 version, so I'm wondering if Rockstar can fix it like Bungie fixed it in Destiny during the beta.

Authority or really the only mainstream site giving some decent feedback on how a game runs.

There is a sore lack of this in the market, it would not take much for someone to set up a site with good capture software and graphics understanding to get some serious hits.

All I can recall is lens of truth and the beyond3d pixel counter threads..

It's best to not use what you're using as the definitive example...especially Youtube stuff.

This is PS4 also. It's the same area as their first shot, foggy?

No...just smoke, and a different player...probably different capture equipment too...etc.

A simple difference in the angle of the player and their car could change the glare and look of the game. I'd say the best comparison is DF or doing it yourself on your own TV. :)

They're both foggy with blur on far away objects and little to no AF.

It's great that you can actually drive without it stuttering like crazy, but that DF video showed off some really bad shimmering. Why are almost all of the devs skimping on AA and AF?

Edit: The fog over the dashboard looks like it is simulating ghosting.

They must have asked specifically for the Xbone version, but I don't know why.

Oh there is a very good reason. It's hope that they run into a game that really shits the bed on the Xbone. Digital Foundries hits have never been higher than when the PS4 and Xbox versions are different, especially when the Xbox versions are significantly worse, like in the first 6 months of this generations launch. Those articles were gold for DF.

Doesn't really say much

but 1080 and a solid 30fps is pretty good.

Interested if there are any differences between the two, traffic density, crushed blacks, etc. I am kinda jelly of the ds4 stuff.

Based on the Digital Foundry Analysis video, there doesn't appear to be any black crush at all. Which is good, seems to be much more of a rarity now on Xbox One.

There can be no crushed blacks because the game is native 1080p.

Crushed blacks are produced by the XBO's scaler.

I got nothing wrong with Eurogamer choosing to do these articles...they have found a content-niche and are exploiting it without practically any competition. Good for them.....

I'm more intrigued by the results and reactions rather than anything else. The content-viewership is a two-way feedback loop.

I won't lie the lack of grass disappoints me, but then I think of just how much more comfortable I am with an Xbox pad for long play sessions and I do not feel too bad about it.

I like how the closer you are to the safe door/opening the thicker the smoke is, but the further away you are (first entering hallway...in the corner with money) the less there is.

Details are great.

I have both versions and yes, that's how it is:

I'm glad they did that if it meant a steady framerate. My biggest hope was that they put framerate as the priority (as far as holding near 30fps).

I'm impressed that everyone got on message and started calling the output of the Xbox One's broken scaler "pop" instead of "black crush".

Next up: start calling the Xbox One's incredibly long install times "delicious anticipation" and tout it as a feature.

Most of the time, yes. But certain games have black crush at 1080p (for unknown reasons), like Sleeping Dogs. In fact, I think that may be the only example of a 1080p title exhibiting black crush on the Xbox One.

The lighting looks alot better in that quick gif, though I guess that could be down to the time of day. The trees look so lush on PS4.

I only have a PS4 I really thought the foliage difference was exaggerated, however looking at that gif, that is pretty significant, heck that is a bigger difference then RDR.(I couldn't stand the PS3 version)

I got my PS4 copy and I'm impressed, however shimmering and what looks like frame drops(it could be judder?) is the only complaint I have.(alialising is bad...similar to PS3/XBOX360 from what I remember)

Lol! :D

Take note Ubisoft.
Xbox One owners get a game they can be more than happy with and PS4 owners get some extra visual enhancements in line with expectations.
Everyone happy. Win-win situation.

Whoah. This is "PS3 has no grass - Mafia 2" levels of details missing.

It reminds me of Red dead redemption on PS3 vs 360 comparison, the PS3 version had less grass and other stuff. Actually i read that a lot of Rockstar games for the PS3 had inferior versions compared to the 360, oh man how the tables have turned this gen.

As it should be.

I plan on picking the game up down the road on PC. I got the X1 build for $17, and had my fingers crossed that they aimed for a good framerate over pushing things just for the heck of it.

I've never played through the game, so a solid performance on my first time is all I asked for. Looks good and performs well. Anyone with an X1, and no gaming Rig (or anymore patience) can buy it in confidence.

I understand black crush. I'm referring to the color palette used. Think Sunset Overdrive and FH2.
