Another drastic difference.

Good to see Rockstar took advantage of the hardware they were given. Driving around in the countryside is awesome on PS4.

It's a perfectly legitimate reason, same if they prefer the XBox One's controller. To me these are pretty valid reasons, not 'meme's.

I live on my own so i would probably go for the PS4 version due to more grass (god that sounds silly to write lol) but i think choosing which version to buy because of which controller they like or which version their friends will be playing, is a lot better reason than the 100 page threads we get on here for every tiny difference XB1/PS4 games have.

People just need to get over the fact that some people find other things more important than just graphics or pixels so stop bringing console warz shite into it. Some people find other things more important.

Damn you guys get upset. I just thought people would like to know. Here is the article I pulled it from. Read for yourself. That's the last time I will go out of my way on this site.

Missed the part in that article where they said the Xbox One version has better textures and color (because they didn't say that). It's certainly not just that their video seems to exhibit improper RGB settings on one or both consoles causing horrendous black/white crush in the Xbox One footage. It should also be pointed out that their video doesn't demonstrate a difference in LOD between the two versions, so it's hard to confirm what they mean by that. Hardly an academic comparison with their compressed screenshots and video.

I think you meant to say "pop" there.

Its like this 'pop' shite. I think the X1 version looks more vibrant and has better textures judging solely on the screen shots in this thread. I don't care WHY it does, if some people think this so called 'pop' looks better then its up to them.

Is that in the PS4 version?

I've seen parallax mapping in other PS4 shots (and the first person trailer Rockstar put out, which was supposed to be PS4 footage). Look at the bushes in this shot from the Console Screenshot thread:

It also looks like the XBO version has it, as the first grass gif in this thread seems to exhibit it on the ground/rock texture:

But the point is, if someone is favoring one over the other because they're unaware they have saturation and contrast image balance options on their TV, they may wish to know, so they can get more foliage and the image balance they prefer.

I'm actually working on Dragon Age right now - but, unfortunately, the PS4 version has been tough to get (it's coming tomorrow). I've had the XO and PC versions for almost a week, though. Should be up sometime later this week (or Saturday at the latest).

When doing frame rate analysis do you have the tools for it to spit out the Min, 99th percentile Min, Max, Avg or do you have to look at the results afterwards to work it all out? I think that being able to see that objective data as well all the subjective analysis would really add to the DF articles.

Are you fucking serious? You can get that pop all you want by messing around with your TV settings. You can't however uncrush blacks and gain detail back that was lost because of garbage gamma output.

Screenshots are not really a good way to judge. Many times the gamma curve on the X1 games are biased towards deeper blacks which gives the game more pop, or a more vibrant look (but is actually a less natural reproduction of the actual colors being represented). The gamma curve choices are not a result of some performance difference between the boxes but rather the way color reproduction is tuned on them.

Just popped back into this thread: so XBONE has less foliage? Jesus Christ! WTF!

Why is that surprising? With both versions running at the same resolution and framerate, Rockstar had to make cuts elsewhere. They THANKFULLY didn't take Ubisoft's dumbass approach by gimping the PS4 version.

I have already said i'd go for the PS4 version because of the extra foliage. I'm just talking about the constant "LMAO", "LOL" style responses people get who prefer the X1 screens.

If i never played a videogame before, knew absolutely nothing about games and i came into this thread and saw those screenshots from the first few pages of this thread, i'd think the X1 looks better.

Probably has more vibrant colour per pixel.

Gaming Bolt (I know) had some comparison shots. Not a definitive source but I'll post the link below.

I would post the photos but they are really large. PS4 looks washed out.

Here is one for good measure

Image122.png

I know you probably chose the least crappy pic in favor of the X1 but the X1 version has shitty crushed black. Having correct colors doesn't equal *washed out.*

you can barely see the details on his shirt.

Update on the DF report;

UPDATE 18/11/14 4:30pm: We've completed work on an initial performance analysis of the PlayStation 4 version of Grand Theft Auto 5, which you can find embedded below. At first blush, we're looking at a very similar release to the Xbox One version - with only one really noticeable difference, the implementation of a lens flare effect that appears either absent or dialled back on Xbox One. Frame-rate is confirmed at 30fps, though the rare dropped frames seen on Xbox One are even less of an issue here. We're working through the game as quickly as we can and our journeys are taking us out of the city, so yes, we're definitely looking into stuff like this and will report back when we have more to share.

I hate that Xbox One's hard shadow. Like it won't go brighter in bright day. It is just so damn stuck with deep black and can be hurt my eyes.

It sameway they set up a tv for store display to fool people. You jack up all the settings to give it "pop."

People are just clueless. You can get that same pop on ps4 by jacking up your tv settings but I wouldnt do it. You lose way too much detail.

So the frame rate drops are even less frequent on the PS4? Good to know. It seems they were already rare on the XBO, but knowing it happens even less on the PS4 version is good news.

The XBO version doesn't seem to have crushed blacks, just that one video with footage seems to have a bad capture of the XBO version. I think it's more an isolated issue, rather than a problem with the XBO version. Other comparisons (including those in this thread), show both versions look similar color wise, whereas others show the PS4 with crushed blacks and the XBO version looking "faded." Seems differences are entirely user generated due to improper capture or RGB settings.

All people are trying to tell you is that the gamma settings and output are not indicative of performance but rather preference. The "washed" out look is actually more closely representing the colors intended to be reproduced; real life imagery also tends to look more "washed" out. The color output settings on X1 are biased towards giving the game more vibrant color "pop" at the expense of image detail where crushed blacks are present. That is information lost that you cannot get back by adjusting the color settings on your tv.

I guess I drank too much of the kool-aid and convinced myself that XBONE would be able to handle this game at 1080p and 30FPS without losing anything in the process. :(

Wiseguy am cry

Let's see if DF actually does a thorough analysis. They sometimes miss stuff that's really obvious. Hard to miss that grass density.

That's only possible if Rockstar chooses to hold back the PS4 version on purpose. All devs should take advantage of the hardware they are given, and it seems they've done so. So props to them.

God I'm having flashbacks to the release of Battelfied 4. Everyone loved the crush and sharpening until they patched it out, lol. You can always over contrast a pic and put it side by side with the original and then call the original "washed out". But the bottom line is the gamma on the PS4 output is what the developers created the art and lighting around , it is correct gamma. There is a reason many devs are going around the XB1 scaler, trying to avoid the ill effects.

I always suspected it would have drawbacks but I figured because it was a last-gen game then maybe it would be alright and they just brought both up to a certain level and called it a day. Looks like they did get more out of PS4 though.

This is Rockstar we're talking about. They don't just half-ass something and "call it a day."

That's incorrect now. Drew McCoy confirmed that the scaler was fixed in the update just before Titanfall was released. It's just not going to work for games released prior to the fix I believe.

Bummer regarding the foliage shots. Its one of those things that you don't really notice...until you notice. Much like RDR PS3/360 differences.

what is the source of this picture? i just have a hard time believing the difference between the two platforms is large enough to where one version has missing clouds, grass, etc.

There was a comparison on Youtube that recently got taken down for some reason.
(Really didn't have time to check if the video was legit or not).

Edit: My bad it is still up. It was some other video that got disabled.

So the PS4 version performs marginally better, has denser foliage, and some additional visual effects like lens flare.

Things in line with what we were expecting.

That said, it looks like both versions are good remasters. People should be happy they are getting a well performing, nice looking end product on both consoles.

The same cannot be said for the technical mess that was AssCreed Unity.

Firstly, my Xbox One version looks hardly anything like that comparison.

Secondly, it's clear that there is a draw radius issue (by design, or not, I don't know) with the foliage on the Xbox one version, I don't think the issue is anywhere near as bad as those shots (are probably made to look) make out it is, but I do think the PS4 does have more foliage, and a greater draw radius.

I am uploading a couple of clips to show it.
