How serious do you take people who say, "I won't buy X from X gaming company again"?

I am just wondering, considering such statements are so easily uttered by many, saying stuff like "I won't buy stuff from EA again!" or "EA sucks!" or "Activision sucks!" or "Fuck Ubisoft!" or anything of that nature, when they are disappointed by a gaming product produced by related companies.

Especially when stuff like Unity is happening.

I think it is especially funny when people say stuff like "Fuck Ubisoft!" and then at the same breath say "But I will buy Far Cry 4" without a sense of irony. Well, I guess you can say that I am very cynical to such statements nowadays--simply put, I just don't believe it.

And apparently gaming companies in general don't believe it as well, considering they continually release broken games over and over and over and over again. They got us hooked, line, and sinker.

Anyways, I am rambling. What about you? What are your opinion when people making such statements?

I don't believe 99% of it. Time and time again I see people say the same thing only to get hyped up for the next game from X company.

The MW2 image also reminds of the L4D2 boycott because it was "too early" for a valve sequel.

I rarely buy Ubisoft games, because they lack in my eyes the quality I seek in games.

People who say they will never buy Ubisoft games again are generally a fan of the company and felt betrayed after a dip in quality, they are very passionate about it. If next year Ubisoft releases an AC that is for Ubisoft standards a quality game, they would be screaming like school girls again.

I don't at all.

Times change, people forget or the game comes out they want, the hardware drops in price or changes tack.

What I take from it is that someone is upset and frustrated. Sometimes I can see their point sometimes its silly. The old adage one should "never say never" applies. If a mistake was made its quite possible the company will learn and do a better job...are you going to punish that?

It also probably means that people should listen to the advice and STOP PREORDERING! That is usually the cause of your frustration. Wait till it comes out and then see how it gets reviewed...that is the favor all those reviewers do for us.

So what's the point of the OP? Hypocrites gonna hypocrite?

For my part, I've been boycotting Sony, Microsoft, Activision, Ubisoft and EA for longer than I can remember. Seriously, it must have been more than a 10 years since I gave any of these companies a gaming dollar. Or any dollar. I'm happy with my choices.

I read it as "company X will have to do something special to win me back as a customer", and it's good that people react to shitty practices, even if some cave.

I don't outright refuse to buy from a developer, but if a game does something I despise, or is involved in a business practice I don't like, then I'm sure as hell not going to buy it until it's dirt cheap second hand. Games with overzealous DLC early out the gate in particular get added to the shitlist. Which is happening more and more with fighting games for me in particular.

You've just invited a lot of people to check your post history.

Actions speak better than words.

Just realized, people who need to state that are the most passionate fans and there's something inside them thinking it's actually impossible for them to resist next X game from Y company. Sounds like those overly attached couple that break up and get back together 10 times per day ("I hate you / I never want to see you again / Don't you dare to get close to me / where you baby / h I missed you so much / please let's not break up ever again ...)

I don't really care what they do or think. I get the feeling that most of them do end up buying games from said companies, though they might buy used which makes it all the more comical.

I'd say its mostly chest beating posturing with no real long term application. I imagine most people who claim to be boycotting Ubisoft after the state of Unity will pick up FarCry 4 or the next Ass Creed if its released actually functioning.

If you can deny yourself decent games purely on moral principle then more power to you. I can't though, I have only marginal will power so I never make bold statements about a boycott. The best I can do is never pre-order and very rarely buy day one. I've managed to hold off getting Unity for now and Driveclub, but thats about as noble as my stance will get.

As a non gaming example I vowed never to do anything involving Santander again after the way they treated me when I had a credit agreement with them - come home remortgage time though and the best deal for me and my family is a Santander mortgage.....yeah, my principals went out of the window and I signed up.

i don't take anyone serious but I'm sure there are a few people who mean it.

I haven't bought an Activision game since THPS2 or a Ubisoft game since AC2. I've played some games from them but I would borrow my brother's copy. Rockstar is probably being added to that list as well considering I'm a PC gamer now and get treated like a pirate.

I meant it with XB1, loved my 360 but MS lost me. Even though the MCC is out and it looks alright I'm just not gonna catch that train.

Well, it's more that they were saying that they were going to give L4D the TF2 treatment, but instead released a sequel just over a year later. Then they gave the TF2 treatment to that instead.

Depends on the person?

If it's some kid angry about weapon balancing in CoD's newest patch... I don't put much stock into it, he'll obviously be back next year. :p

If it's someone older and principled I know on GAF being appalled by a company's business practices, I know that they're most likely going to stick to their word.

Gotta love the ones people make for big companies.

"I am never buying another EA ever again"

Sure buddy.

I wonder if the same people bought Dragon Age: Inquision, PvZ: Garden Warfare or will change their mind for ME4 or Mirrors Edge 2.

Most people are fickle and will forget what they've said once the next advertising hype train rolls around.

I've not bought an EA game since origin released, or an activision game since... world at war? not bought anything from Microsoft (in the games department) since I bought my 360 and I'm planning on not buying another from soft game after Dark Souls 2 until they make another Souls game that's multiplatform AND doesn't look shit like DS2 was.

Well I've stuck to my decision not to buy Ubisoft games since the Unity fiasco.

Then again I haven't purchased any games recently as I'm moving to Germany soon....

But yea, it's definitely, probably down to my principles.... I think...

I think it is an interesting situation and, in my opinion, directly relates to why gaming companies seemingly so often releasing products that are not meant to be released yet, like Unity.

Because no matter how harshly many gamers shouting at them, they knew the vast majority of those gamers will keep wagging their tails for their latest gaming release.

I don't think I have ever said that but if I ever will then I'll make sure I mean it.

It's true that generally statements like that are hard to take seriously.

If someone is saying never again, it's because they're emotionally invested enough to be angry. That means they're emotionally invested enough to come back.

It's when folks don't howl in outrage and just expect it. When the hate becomes indifference, that's when you have real problems.

Not seriously when their upset about bad looking over marketed games being bad over marketed games.

People have too much money/do not value the money they have. I generally don't care NHS more.

Look at the utter tat you get in some preorder or exclusive editions. People buy too much shit; no wonder games companies take the piss.

I get pretty stubborn about these things, but I also don't get too wrapped up in gaming politics.

I don't plan on picking up a Ubisoft game in the near future, but if a game really strikes my interest I will get it eventually. I avoid buying Gearbox games, but if Battleborn is the greatest game ever I won't ignore it.

I boycott any media with heavy DRM, and haven't bought any full priced game this decade.
That includes the game I where I was following every rumor for years, Diablo 3.
The closest I came to changing that was Portal 1+2 and Witcher 1+2 for ~$40 dollars each.

But who knows, I might change my mind.

I don't take anybody serious. People say stuff just to try and draw attention to themselves. There's few that stick to it or are even being truthful in wanting a product but really changed their mind about it.

What games do you have?

Er, all kinds? I've been playing since ~1990. I just dislike dudebro games and grimdark games and realistic sports games. Can you guess which companies produce almost all the games I dislike? :)

Besides disliking certain themes and genres, I actively dislike certain publishers. EA for example bought then killed several of my favourite developers: Bullfrog, Westwood, Origin, Maxis. They're feasting on Bioware as I type this. Not to mention all the DRM bullshit and micro-transactions and games released unfinished and later patched. No sir, I want none of that mess.

Not very.
Now if someone says "I think I am done with X series" Or "I will wait fpr the reviews because if they pull that shit in X game again, I won't buy it", I tend to believe them.

I swore never to buy another Zipper game after Socom 3 and I never did again. But obviously there's no way of knowing how serious people generally are. Most of them are just making their claims in moments of frustration and anger that they eventually put behind them.
