Your Next Favorite: Folklore (Video)

Hey everyone. There was an interesting and unique game that came out for the PS3 back in 2007 called Folklore that I never hear anyone talking about, even here on NeoGAF where I'd assume most people have PS3s at this point. So, I decided to make a video about it because I feel it deserves more attention and I don't want to to be forgotten in time. The game didn't get much attention when it first came out because the PS3 had yet to hit its stride, but I think this is a game that will appeal to a lot of people because of how interesting conceptually it is.

Here is the video:
Your Next Favorite: Folklore

I hope I can get some of you to give this game a shot!

Not sure if you can make a thread promoting your own video.

Regardless, great game...couldn't actually get myself to finish it though.

I've been making threads about my videos here for years now. I usually ask a mod for permission, and they always say it's cool because I'm an active member of the community and stuff.

I've *always* wanted to play this because I'm a sucker for games that involve the use of, well, folklores and fairy tales.

It was a seriously great experience. I think they would have been better off making a proper sequel to it honestly rather than Majin or... whatever that other game was.

I really enjoyed this game. The first thing that caught my attention was how colorful and vibrant the worlds were. It really did feel like stepping into a fairytale.

GameRepublic was a solid studio. I enjoyed Folklore, but Majin and the Forsaken Kingdom was their real gem. It was so delightful and charming that it put them on the map for me. I was sad to see them go under, but they were one of those solid B-tier studios who just couldn't survive in the growing, changing industry.

(Their final game Knights Contract was bad, but I assume that was just developed and released when they were already on life support.)

I bought my PS3 when the game released, I loved the visuals and styles.
Probably one of the few (very few games) to use motion control in a nice but not too wacky way!

Majin and the Forsaken Kingdom was cute too, but Folklore was more innovative, more different.

A good friend of mine told me about this game. He got his PS3 on release and said he liked it when it came out. Maybe I'll give it a whirl one day.

Good video as usual Bit, I actually have never seen any gameplay of this game, despite knowing about it for years.

Yeah, Majin is another game I plan on doing. Probably not next though. It's really sad to look back on Game Republic's library of games. They had some really good titles, but had to do what they could to try to survive in the market by making games like Clash of the Titans. The original Genji was really good too. Very sad to see them go out the way they did.

Love the game's aesthetic, but does it actually hold up in terms of gameplay and being a good game?

The controls can feel a little stiff because it's an early PS3 game, but it holds up. You're always obtaining new Folk with unique moves so how you're playing is always changing. That keeps things fresh. The biggest problem is that both characters play the same levels for the most part. If they switched things up more than they did, it would have made a huge difference.

This would be another great one to dust off and release on PC. It's so sad that games like this don't really have a chance of being made these days. I hope someone or something can create a market for them (c'mon Steam...)

Edit: heh

Indicative of my backlog, I guess.

I picked up a copy of it a couple of months back, but it won't work on my newer ps3. It runs okay on the older ones though. I assume it's because the readers on older ps3s was better. That being said I'm quite interested in playing it. As far as I know, besides SMT and the odd reference in JRPGs, this game is pretty much the first game to deal with Irish myths since Tir Na nOg.

I own it! I...didn't really like it, though. I should try replaying it at some point and see how time has treated it (and me).

But Majin was awesome.

Very good game. It is filled with atmosphere and whimsy. I loved walking around the hub village, while that soft piano background music would play.

Folklore spoiler -
The final boss fight with the giant crow was surreal. An epic chorus plays while you're fighting it. It's nuts.

One of the best PS3 games. I love how the story is told, and all of the plot twists. Very thrilling to play.
Great art, music, and overall design as well.
Majin was also a lovely game (though not quite as good as Folklore)
Game Republic are very talented.

Starring Hal Emmerich.
Ding ding ding. I remember enjoying the game up until the point where it asked me to play it again with (N)Otacon. I tried, but got burnt out quite fast, and I told myself I'd just take a break and go back to it some other time, except I never actually did. I still intend to give it another shot one day, but having lost my original save with a busted PS3 makes me look up against it. Perhaps the suggestion of alternating between characters is not a bad idea.

Either way, I always enjoy your videos, HBH, and this is a series that would interest me a lot.

Folklore was the best game of last generation for me. will give the video a watch after work.

we got tons of LTTP threads for it.

You're like the only person I've ever seen talk about it. I remember you bringing it up in another thread I made and on twitter, if I recall correctly.

Because just one person bought it.

it did very ok-ish in japan at least with 40k in japan first year by october 2007 (when PS3 was super expensive) and the game got Japanese greatest hit. SCE didn't give the game another chance when the PS3 got much popular and cheaper, it didn't got a PSN release or a reprint anything to let more people buy it.

The only criticism that I think is extremely fair and important for people wanting to buy this game is this: You have to play the game as both characters (which is fine) but at one point in time you have to switch and as a result you lose access to all the cool pokemon you caught and developed for the character you just played with. They are still on your character, but the other character has no access to them. It makes the game a huge fucking slog when youre kicking ass and slapping robots and ghosts and shit then all of the sudden its like "not only do you have to start at the beginning, but you REALLY start from the beginning"

Otherwise an excellent game and still the best use of the motion controller to this date, perhaps on any console

It's very recommended to play each chapter with both characters before moving to the next chapter in the game, by doing this you don't feel you are starting from the start at all. (this is also for new people who want to play the game now)

also the use of folks is separated because of story reasons, Ellen summon and controls them completely, Keats just uses their powers. so it's very different for each of them and will not make sense to give you the folks Ellen uses and upgraded because they are actually different in style.

The Binary Domain and Evil Within footage is a clever trick to get me to buy Folklore. Just kidding I own those two games and would definitely give Folklore a shot if it came to PC, I remember seeing it on a friend's PS3.
