Street Fighter 5 for PS4 & PC teaser trailer

I think it already sold more than the DC and Saturn. But if you want to keep digging.

It also sold more than the Atari Jaguar. You may be on to something!

Um, yes they are. The only difference between Sega & MS in this is that MS has money.

If you were around back in the 90's to witness it, then you would know how similar the situations are.

Thank you

I remember a year and half into the PS1 when Saturn slashed the price and bundled in 3 AAA games with the console which was totally unheard of in those days.

I think the deal does makes sense for both parties.

It makes sense for Capcom since fighting games sell better on PS platforms anyway. Not to mention that the PS4 is curb stomping Xbone this gen, which definitely factors into the cost vs benefit calculation.

For SCE, locking down the first iteration of the biggest IP of the genre together with GG Xrd will help foster the community within PS4.

I have many theories about Street Fighter 5- I don't actually expect it will be a traditional free 2 play title, something similar to killer instinct or Dead or Alive Ultimate maybe but unlike KI , there will be a standard disc release version of the game.

My prediction - There will be a handful of small arcade tests done in japan with the alpha version of the PC edition. It will have only 8 characters or so, just to fine tune whatever new gameplay ideas they have (the VERY brief look within this trailer seems to indicate that perhaps the player can charge up some kind of attack independent of SF4's super or ultra gauge - like gathering chi in dragon ball - as well as possibly having air combos/juggling becoming more prominent). After this , I suspect an early access/paid beta program will be enacted , anyone that pre-orders the game through PSN will have access to a full beta edition with 8-12 characters. This beta edition will be made available about 6 months before the game comes out and it will be playable for 30 days followed by a 3 month shut down and then a 14 day online test followed by a break until the game releases.

I think it's a safe bet to say it will launch with 18 characters but unlike street fighter 4, this version will be marketed as a platform. What I mean is, once you buy the disc or purchase the digital copy, every future enhancement will be DLC. The Disc release will also be updated every 12 months as well so that new owners are always jumping in to the same experience as everyone else but you would never HAVE to buy the disc.

To that end I expect the game will largely be shaped by the community after that initial release. I'm going to guess out of those 18 characters included day 1 , we'll see 14 characters returning from Ultra Street Fighter 4, 2 more classic characters from any of the accepted main SF titles or even final fight and 2 brand new fighters.

Taking it one step further , I think those 14 returning characters will be based on the 14 most popular characters in USF4, popularity as based on overall usage worldwide based on all current editions of the game. Tier ranking wouldn't factor in.

Obviously , as mentioned above I see them doing at least an annual update, I think this will be handled in the form of a season pass. Spend 60 bucks on the initial game - you get 18 characters and 12 stages with all the essential modes as well as beta access if you pre-order before the end of next September. Season pass would be 24.99 if you purchase it within 30 days of the games release, 29.99 if it's later. I would expect 3 content packs to follow in each season. These packs would be 12.99 separately to make the savings better for a season pass holder. Finally, each content pack would include 2 more characters , an extra background and 1 set of extra costumes for each character. So , a year after release the game would end up with 3 extra stages and 6 more characters as well as 3 costume packs. Out of those 6 characters, owners of the game would be able to vote from a short list which characters they'd like to see next. So perhaps capcom would be working on 8 characters at the same time and the audience basically choses which ones they want earliest / latest.

The 2016 disc copy would then have all of this DLC on disc but it would still cost 50$ to buy the game at retail. Legacy owners would then get a discount to buy a season 2 pass for just 19.99 for an early buy in, 24.99 for a later buy in and new owners would have the 24.99/29.99 pricing.

I could see capcom milking this setup out for 4 seasons of content. So by the time it's all said and done , you'd get 42 characters , 24 backgrounds and 12 sets of outfits for every character. Players buying in from day 1 that decide to buy everything would end up spending 145$ over 4 years.

As well, the game would have a demo edition for free, maybe it has a rotating sample of characters , instead of selling them ala carte, there would simply be an upgrade option, make the trial the full game for XX$ and then you can buy the DLC however you want.

Didn't realize the majority of the Street Fighter fanbase was on Xbox consoles. Thought it was more niche on Xbox while Tomb Raider started and was always more popular on Playstation.

But whatever, can't deny I've got a console preference.

Tomb raider started on PC playstation and sega

Then sony moneyhatted it .

Hell Sony specifically moneyhatted tombraider to keep it off the rival platforms

Hence why some people left the company after the first two

TR was announced for all platforms. Two months later it was suddenly XB1 exclusive, and both SE and MS were very, very hazy and reticent about explaining the exclusivity deal.

SF hasn't been announced yet.

And yet you're trying to compare and contrast people's attitudes. Doesn't work.

No it wasnt.

AMazon only had it for pre-order on the xb1 since the beginning the revisionist history here is hilarious

They are the exact same models. Just little tweaks here and there.

If they're the same models, then they're taken from the original zbrush sculpts and not just ported directly from SFIV game files. At the very least Ryu's gi doesn't look like it's made of paper anymore.

Sega's blunders spanned 2 consecutive generations (some say 2.5) MS is only now going through hardships.

Did they really? Sega Saturn wasn't viable a year or two after its launch, and the games having CG cutscenes meant a no N64 version. All TR games at the time kept releasing on PC and when Sega released the Dreamcast TR showed up on that too!

And Ken Bogard (see my upward post) said there won't be any Ultra or Super edition, him too knows people working at Capcom (he knew about SFV since a long time).

We'll see! :)

Much as I'd like to believe that, I believe Capcom said the same thing as SFIV back when it first came out didn't they?

Yep, there wont be any super but there will be a Turbo and a Honeycomb edition ;).

You know Capcom are going to DLC the shit out of this game... but I am fine with this, love this game so its ok with me ;)!

So Ken should get his crazy kicks back, if they put them into Omega mode they have to be putting them into here as well. Omega mode has to have some move ideas they want to test for V in it....

It would be nice if it's a F2P model...

fuck that, would cost me more money probably since i'll have to buy every character + story mode etc....

I would be fine if they did it how the handled last gen from Super upwards....

Super - Disc
Arcade Edition - DLC / Disc
AE 2012 - Balance Patch
Ultra - DLC / Disc
Ultra 2015 - Balance Patch with additional Omega Mode.

etc/

They are the exact same models. Just little tweaks here and there.

new textures, more detail, reshaped face, reshaped eyes, new eyebrows, tweaked hair, ryu chest muscles redone, modified classic costumes etc (and I want to say chunner has a longer neck but the angle on the comparsion shot for IV has her looking down... so can't tell...)

exactly the same.

It was money hatted and Lara become a PS mascot for a time. The first Tomb Raider did come out on Saturn though:

"Why are Ryu and Chun-Li still bipedal humans? Capcom is phoning this one in."

i and many others where annoyed as shit at capcom reusing the IV models for Sfxtk, going by the reactions in this thread to the new models for V (which will be updated more, look @ chun li in sfiv alpha....) I guess they made the right call for that lol. even if they had changed them from iv but kept the artsytle they would've just be phoning it in and reusing assets;

I honestly can't say I understand all the gripes and comparisons made over the art style and design. It looks insane and completely different from SFIV.

I think people need to stop associating fine, sharp details with realism and see that things can be super stylistic without being blatantly cartoony.

(side note. That Tatsu gif had me shittin' fireworks. PANTS...TIGHTENING)

Given I have a PC that I keep up to date and also a PS4 I am not completely screwed by this, however unless some of my friends that I play SF with buy either a PS4 or PC I can't play with them....great.

Well, the good news is that if they wanna play SFV, they can if they are so inclined.

Exclusive means timed exclusive until it has explicitly been confirmed otherwise...
Has it?
It has been confirmed an exclusive exclusive. Though the door's still open for the next revision 3 months to a year later in all likelyhood.

Believes Dragon Quest is a franchise managed by Sony
I don't know where some people are looking, but these models are different from the SF4 models, much more on the realistic side instead of cartoony in terms of shading and have much more detail to them in terms of polygons(the ryu model of SF4 for example has a bunch of flat textures on his body as muscles, whereas this one actually has proper definition coming out of his body, as well as no easily seen polygonal edges unlike the 4 version.)

Some people might be getting confused because the SF4 models and these share the same kind of "bulky" design, but they definitely are not the same models

They've gone and done it... they've gone and woke the sleeping dragon now.

Sony should have left well enough alone and now they're going to get it. It's not enough that they're bleeding benjamins from practically every crevice of their existence. Now they go and throw immense moneyhats at a niche game like Street Fighter just to piss off the market. Why pay to keep a game out of the hands of as many gamers as possible? Why not put that money into first-party studios and games instead?

I know, I know... this is the way the business goes as they say. Well, they forced Microsoft's hands with their early sales lead and Microsoft only responded with an NPD whooping (source: musings thread) by way of incredible deals and value. Microsoft will undoubtedly follow this announcement up with some real megatons of their own.

Gears remake collection. A true Banjo sequel. Halo 5 beta in the hands of gamers. The next Bayonetta, Dead Space and Crysis as exclusives. Those are the kinds of blockbuster response announcements I expect, and then some. You hit Microsoft with a jab, you best be ready for a flurry of uppercuts coming at you in response.

This is some 'shot themselves in the foot', 'I'm a expert on Japanese culture' tier stuff.

From what I remember Sega moneyhatted Tomb Raider for a timed exclusive but it became linked to Playstation after it's debut on the system with TR2 being cancelled for the Saturn due to limitations of the system and Saturn being a pretty much dead platform.
I don't think there was any money involved on Sony's part.

It's because it's the same artstyle even though same artstyle =! same model.

If Rose is in V they need to show her off asap, her IV design is awful.... capcom really improved their female designs in IV over the years... uniboob Viper and Rose were.... meh

They really needed to go with a different art style. Yes, the models are improved, but I felt very little watching that trailer. It all comes down to gameplay, but seeing how similar this looks to SF4 really makes me wonder how much different the gameplay will actually be.

It's wait and see for me, but I'm not hyped at all. Now if it looked something like Guilty Gear for PS4....

The same art style will have no bearng on the gameplay being different or not, after all SFxTK had the exact same models for the SF side and played completely different from IV.

I agree, but it's obvious they didn't want to deviate too much from SF4. It would be ridiculous to assume art style would dictate gameplay, but as I said it will be a wait and see approach for me. Capcom is not the same company they were before and I have a feeling that SF5 will share more similarities to SF4 then any of the other previous transitions (1-2, 2-3, 3-4).

F2P model is unpredictable as to how it might be implemented. You could have a situation as KI were the game releases with a very limited roster and not full-fledged. The potential for fuck ups is big. Thus, why mess up the current model? Unless you're in dire need to slim your budget and hedge in case of a flop....a double-edged sword since cutting content also increases the chances of a flop. Plus, it's a third party and one of Capcom's staple franchises. It's not a case of first party where more risk could be taken - like in KI.

I don't think there was any money involved on Sony's part.

"While the original Tomb Raider was released on both the PlayStation and Sega Saturn game consoles, Tomb Raider II was no longer designed for the Sega Saturn despite having been confirmed as a target platform for the game in the first place. Following the cancellation announcement, Adrian Smith cited technical limitations of the console to program an adequate conversion.[9] In September 1997, Sony Computer Entertainment America signed a deal with Eidos to make console releases for the Tomb Raider franchise exclusive to the PlayStation, preventing the Sega Saturn or the Nintendo 64 from having any Tomb Raider game released for it until 2000, a deal that would prove very beneficial to Sony both in terms of revenue dollars and also in further cementing the PlayStation's growing reputation as the go-to system for must-have exclusive titles.[10]"

This is when the term 'moneyhat' should have been coined.

Damn, we went through a whole generation with the motto "Sony doesn't PAY for exclusives".

FWIW, I'm fine with moneyhats. Good for Sony on the SF V move. It is all part of the competitive landscape. And it has been for a long time. Now, the Nintendo thing where they blackmailed NES developers to keep things exclusive, well, fuck that.
