Street Fighter 5 for PS4 & PC teaser trailer

If Sony is actually funding the game's development, a la Bayonetta 2, then yeah....this ain't coming to the Xbox One. Well, not until the inevitable Super Street Fighter 5, or whatever the next iteration will be called.

But here's the thing. If Capcom couldn't afford to make SF5, how are they going to pull through with SSF5?

Surely this requires future sight on both Sony and Capcom's part (why pay for a game only to have it ditched afterwards)?

"While the original Tomb Raider was released on both the PlayStation and Sega Saturn game consoles, Tomb Raider II was no longer designed for the Sega Saturn despite having been confirmed as a target platform for the game in the first place. Following the cancellation announcement, Adrian Smith cited technical limitations of the console to program an adequate conversion.[9] In September 1997, Sony Computer Entertainment America signed a deal with Eidos to make console releases for the Tomb Raider franchise exclusive to the PlayStation, preventing the Sega Saturn or the Nintendo 64 from having any Tomb Raider game released for it until 2000, a deal that would prove very beneficial to Sony both in terms of revenue dollars and also in further cementing the PlayStation's growing reputation as the go-to system for must-have exclusive titles.[10]"

Wow...

Alright, the Internet is going to hate me even more after my next video. I think it's high time we got some proper perspective on this whole money hatting malarkey.

I bought the first release of SFIV (I actually went to the launch party, too), but I could never get into the game. I'm guessing a new sequel/cycle of games is a good place to try again?

I think the first official moneyhat started with Street Fighter II on the SNES, so it's rooted into the franchise's history lol

Some people in this thread either don't remember what the SFIV character models look like or have never played SFIV.

Just look at Chun Li's bracelets. In SF4, they're just diffuse textures. In SF5, they actually have screen space reflections. That's a big difference right there.

The game can still look better though.

Man, im just really glad this is coming to PS4. Im NOT saying im rejoicing over possible console exclusivity (could care less, the more people who get to play this the better), its just that if this was somehow an exclusive on a machine that i DIDNT own i'd have to buy one right then and there. God knows 2014 has been expensive enough as it is.

Other franchises i can somewhat live without, although id be sore about it for a while... but a mainline Street Fighter is non-negotiable in my book.

Sharp looking snippets of game right there. Seem to have taken the cartoony colours and shading down just one or two notches, looked great whatever it is they've done.

I'll add it to the growing list of reasons to buy a new console.

Why pay for any timed exclusivity? It has been going on for a long time now, but it hasn't stopped. Because it works.

Street Fighter is a major franchise. It's going to take TONS of money to keep it off the competing console forever.

SSF5 or whatever the incremental incarnation is called will cost much less to develop than SF5 does, because the foundation will be there in the form of the first engine as will the inital character models as well.

Meh, Sony is just trying to broaden the excluaive lineup of their platform. Nothing wrong with that or snatching up a 3rd party exclusive. It's just business. Capcom needs the cash, and Sony gets a game.

If Capcom is too obnoxious with the FTP model, folks will just stick with SF4.

All they really have to do is follow Dota 2 and keep it cosmetic. Make it individual clothing parts instead of a full skin so parts can be swapped. Sell dye to recolor the clothing, If they really wanted to go crazy have players drop gym bags they can open by buying a key like in CSGO for a chance at a "rare" that is a different color fireball or something.

It's all there already; if they do something stupid like gems again then whatever.

Have any insiders been able to provide the details as whether or not this is a straight moneyhat or a development level cash injection on Sony's part?

I'm inclined to believe the latter, given what Ono's been saying and the very public knowledge that Capcom is in dire straights financially these days. It seems they can't find the money or balls to fully fund a current gen only game without the help of a 1st party partner. Save for Resident Evil 7, I can see this becoming a trend with them going forward.

EDIT: Hell, the fact that Sony is aiding them with development of their next flagship engine tells you all you need to know.

Yeah, I can't think of a current capcom game outside of maybe Resident Evil and Monster Hunter where they haven't had a marketing deal or help in some way, maybe Deep Down is on that list, but PS exclusive as far as we know, so who knows what that situation is.

Given that there is a PC version, a cosmetic only model will just mean folks mod what they need. Might help PC sales.

My hope is that PC is given respect and isn't gimped, given how similar PS4 is to PC, I feel more confident about next-gen ports than I do previous-gen ports.

Well it doesn't look anywhere near done so I imagine it will whenever it gets closer to release.

I dont see this happening, Capcom is one of the biggest supporters of the FGC and they know the cache they have.

They hold Capcom Cup which players get entry to based on their performance in other majors.

The best thing about the announcement is that this game is current gen only.

Let's see what Capcom can do with the engine.

The more I see of Ryu the better I think b
he looks. Interested to see Ken next!

There's no way SSF5 costs as much to make as SF5, though.

That only would apply to the top of the top. You can't build a game just on the elite players of the world. The competitive success of fighting games is built on a pile of pot monsters and they know in their hearts they're not getting that cash.

If you nickel-and-dime those folks they'll drop.

Wait. Has this been confirmed to be a FTP game?

No, I don't expect them to go FTP. I kinda expect them to keep the model they've used for SF4.

They've gone and done it... they've gone and woke the sleeping dragon now.

Sony should have left well enough alone and now they're going to get it. It's not enough that they're bleeding benjamins from practically every crevice of their existence. Now they go and throw immense moneyhats at a niche game like Street Fighter just to piss off the market. Why pay to keep a game out of the hands of as many gamers as possible? Why not put that money into first-party studios and games instead?

I know, I know... this is the way the business goes as they say. Well, they forced Microsoft's hands with their early sales lead and Microsoft only responded with an NPD whooping (source: musings thread) by way of incredible deals and value. Microsoft will undoubtedly follow this announcement up with some real megatons of their own.

Gears remake collection. A true Banjo sequel. Halo 5 beta in the hands of gamers. The next Bayonetta, Dead Space and Crysis as exclusives. Those are the kinds of blockbuster response announcements I expect, and then some. You hit Microsoft with a jab, you best be ready for a flurry of uppercuts coming at you in response.

But Capcom's previous-gen ports were mostly fantastic.

If this turns out to be the biggest announcement at PSX then whoever the rogue employee of Capcom would be in deep trouble.

From what I remember Sega moneyhatted Tomb Raider for a timed exclusive but it became linked to Playstation after it's debut on the system with TR2 being cancelled for the Saturn due to limitations of the system and Saturn being a pretty much dead platform.
I don't think there was any money involved on Sony's part.

Sony moneyhatted TR2

Really wish they went to another art style. This looks like a sf4 definitive version rather than the generational leap that was sf2->sf3. I wouldn't even mind if they went back to the sf3 theme of music + fighting = art, with updated music (going from rap to edm or whatever kids listen to now).

In the past we had a rich variety of Capcom fighters between the Street Fighters released. Pretty sad in comparison between 4 and 5.

Fighting games always seem to be some of the least impressive looking games for some reason. I mean, I know they strive for a solid 60fps in most cases, which does take its toll, but I still feel that for games that revolve largely around a 2d plane with static backgrounds(not that they don't have moving stuff in them, but in the sense that the camera basically sees them from the same way at almost all times), seems like they should be capable of much better.

I don't really agree with that. Historically, they've been the most impressive. Tekken 3 looked insane on PS1, VFs have always been stunning on consoles. Street Fighter has never been impressive graphically, but I think it's the exception, not the rule.

street fighter 3 is still the best looking beat em up!

Yeah, this is more of a 3D SF thing. VF5 was amazing when it first came out, so was both Soul Caliburs and Tekken.

Still I still think SFV will look good once we get some proper direct feed gameplay. The backgrounds look nice.

DOA3 at Xbox launch.
It's (potentially) just two characters and you can tightly control player and camera movement. Even with 60fps fighting games should be just about the best-looking games out there.
One problem is that none of them have AAA budgets anymore.
