I'm curious to know the age group of all the people still whining and crying over a remake.

Probably end up buying it. People need to let go. Shits never gonna be remade, id rather see money spent on new games.
Yes. It's truly time to let it go. Santa Clause doesn't exist. SE does.

The more i think about this whole thing, the more i realize, its not even that i was expecting a remake, i wasn't at this point, how many years later, i had actually figured it wasn't ever coming, but it was the way they set up that reveal on stage, that truly makes me angry (and i'm not one to get angry over video games very often) but that just felt like they did it to be assholes, and i hope they realized how bad that made them look
Amen, couldn't have put it any other way

So, we've gone from a situation in which Sony had a large and robust marketplace for titles from previous systems to one in which individual titles have to be specially released for PS4, and not even the original versions?

Why is this OK?

Why don't they just make their existing Classics available for PS4?

I can already see next year's conference:

Hashimoto back on stage.

*loud booing from everyone, suddenly turns to screams*

Hashimoto: HELLO EVERYONE. IT'S BEEN 16 YEARS.

*zoom out, FFVIII logo on screen*

Hashimoto: COMING EXCLUSIVELY TO PS4-

*crowd rushes on stage, Hashimoto is lost in a swarm of angry gamers*

Hashimoto: PLEASE...BE....EXCI-

*shit is crazy, hashi's last words are the last straw, giant brawl that consumes the entire conference and soon, the entire city*

*FFVIII:R HD footage plays quietly in the background*

So, is Square's PR gonna acknowledge this, you know, at all?
I've seen comments of rage at them from both Japan and the West so I highly doubt they are unaware of the backlash. It would be respectful for them, even if they don't apologize for it, to at least mention that they are aware of the rage.

likes or dislikes on a youtube video means nothing. they are still hits on the video.
this will sell well, they have nothing to worry about really.

So, can we expect this for VIII and IX? Why not just allow PS classics to play on the PS4, or just buy the steam release. You'd have to have a real dinosaur computer to not be able to play the steam version. No reason for this port, I guess trophies. This required 0 stage time though, still confused as to why they did that.

I wouldn't expect 9, as it has no PC version.

If no remake, the announcement should have been " final fantasy 1-10 coming on the psn. The pc port is just bizarre

It's easier to port x86 software to an x86 device than it is to port MIPS software to an x86 device.

This whole ordeal has been pretty surreal.

You're telling me. I thought the Playstation Experience was boring beyond Uncharted and I wanted to see interesting announcements. I was talking with my friend on Vent as the conference was running, and about 12 minutes before this announcement I was like "where's my ff7 remake for ps4 announcement!". Then Square-Enix came on. Then that screen came on. Then the announcement was made.

Then I wondered why they were showing all the most important scenes from the old game.

Then I realized that Sony had just thrown the worst conference ever.

I think the real twist of the knife is the fact that the last time I remember SE seriously showing interest in FF7, they showed a legit remade teaser with upgraded graphics. If we'd gotten something on that level, I'd be happy. An emulator disguised as a game is just wrong. PEACE.

This was already covered and discussed several hundred posts ago, but a REmake style remake is actually quite costly for Square because they no longer have the original assets for FF7.

The difference between development for FF10/10-2 HD and a REmake of FF7 is that 10/10-2 were primarily 3D. While textures required some work to get it to HD standard, that amount of work pales in comparison to building and rerendering all of the 2D backgrounds of FF7, on top of building new character and monster models and texturing and animating them, as well as essentially making a new overworld map. That is not counting the work they will have to put into sound, music, and the money that will have to go into making new HD CGI cutscenes. In no way is it just "a few fixed-camera backgrounds and models". At this point, they might as well make a new game.

Moreover, the backgrounds of 7 were created with the proportions of the stumpy field character model in mind; if they were to make a realistically proportioned Cloud, the backgrounds would have to be adjusted for a new character size from the references that they could rip from the game disc (assets that can at best only be references, because 640x480 cannot simply go through magic software and come out looking gorgeous in 1080p).

So even if people have been reduced to the bargaining state ("We don't really want a full blown modern game version anymore, just give us something with spruced up graphics"), it's still not that financially appealing to SE. They're better off investing their money into new games.

That's why I said this myself:
Way less work and costs than a FFXV-like remake, though still no easy peasy effort as they practically would have to build everything from ground up with a new engine (not too complex for this kind of game with 2D-movement only and simple animations).

Of course they'd have to rebuild everything from the ground up. But it's still not as much work as FFXV with its proper, complex 3D world and dynamic action battle-system. FFVII has simple game mechanics. World map proportions could stay the same - like Type-0 HD.
Look at the amount of CG movies that Visual Works pumps out every year just for some FFXIV promo trailers and for all those FF games. I'm sure they would be able to churn out enough for FFVIIR, too.
The 3D model amount is not significantly more than in FFX/X-2 HD or Type-0 HD, etc. Maybe I'm underestimating it, but I really don't think this kind of remake is that far-fetched.

Maybe Cyber Connect 2 will the ones doing it, especially after those recent comments.

I wouldn't call a keynote a conference. The whole weekend is just a party for them.

What a slap in the face. We saw a tech demo years ago and now, we just get the PC port? God damn it Square Enix, do you not like money!? The shit shown this past weekend was a fucking letdown. Square Enix is truly a shadow of their former selves.

Please be Excited.

Well, you have to give credit where it's due. You could tell Sony had invited actual, passionate gamers into their audience, as those were honest reactions that the people at home shared with them that very moment in front of their screens.

If they'd announced this as part of the #buildingthelist segment of the keynote, I would've thought, "Hey, that's neat! PS4 can play FF VII." And that would've been that.

Like so many other people, I totally let myself get taken. When Hashimoto came onstage, I joked to my wife, "Yeah, yeah. 'Please be excited.' How are you going to pull the rug out from under us today?" And yet, I still got taken! I'm such a sucker. "Holy shit. No way. Ho-ly Shit! They're really doing it! I can't believe... 'SPRING 2015'? Ohhhhhhhhh."

I laughed the rest of the keynote. Hell, I still laugh whenever I think about it. I'm now kind of glad they announced it that way, if only for the entertainment value.

So, are the PC version's graphics (backgrounds, characters, whatever) better than the PlayStation version's in some ways?

New games like ff13 lightning returns 22: electric boogaloo? Yeah, I'd rather they remake ff7 than keep churning out that shit.

But its never gonna happen. They clearly have no interest in doing it. There is tons of games I want to be remaked but I accept that they are never gonna happen. Let go my good friend

This is pretty much how I always imagined the remake; people finding a way to work with higher-res assets.

Things might be 'lost', but I`m sure that if you find a way to get the engine working you`ll just have to start up a Kickstarter and people would gladly put down their money to have all the art redone. You don't need big renderfarms to push out those backgrounds. Everything is already there. You just need to copy and improve it. Biggest issue would be the CGI; but I guess that can be remade with some dedication.

All those original renders are gone, though. They only exist as they do on the PS1 disc; at 320x240. You can't go back and re-render them, they're gone. Even as early as '98 Square couldn't find them, which meant that the PC version was pixelated on release. Any upres would, therefore, have to completely recreate and re-render each scene, which would be painstaking and expensive - and therein lies the problem. Square probably won't spend that amount of money without modernizing the game significantly in order to appeal to a wider audience (they plainly believe turn-based doesn't really float for AAA in 2014), but if they do that they risk 'ruining' FF7 and they know it, so it's easier to just not touch it.

If it was as simple as firing up the original source files and layering higher-res CG backgrounds over the existing code and then releasing at a budget price, believe me, Square would've done it. Most if not all of that stuff is lost, though.

Even in the case of something like Distant Worlds, you'll notice for FF7 music they liberally use clips of AC - and it's simply because, again, the highest res the FF7 CG scenes exist at is something like 640x480, and unlike games like FFX where they've actually re-rendered the scenes at a higher resolution for the huge concert hall screens, all they can do for FF7 is smooth out the original source files and upscale them... thus a lot of use of AC stuff, to avoid showing it for too long.

This problem is mostly unique to FF7 I believe, in part because chunks of FF7's CG/background generation was outsourced to a Hong Kong company that has long since closed.

Yes, remaking FFVII without the original assets would be costly.

It would, in fact, be tantamount to creating a new game from scratch.

So?

It would still please more people than most any other game they could make from scratch.

I can already imagine that screaming Hashimoto

I can't believe he did not get BOOED on stage, if i would have been there I would have gotten up and started chanting " WE WANT A REMAKE" and made everyone join me I'm very confident that EVERY single person in there would have joined.

But NOOOO!!!! the same people applauded and cheered when they should have been voicing their disagreement. That was the best occasion to do so and they let it pass.
/Shakeshead in disbelief.

Honestly I'm kind of surprised there wasn't any booing either. The rest of your post is kind of silly though brah.

If you guys were there watching with us you would have been caught off guard as much as the attending audience. Like seriously, All the cool announcements building up to that and Hashimoto walking out enthusiastic as ever. "17 years..."

The footage playing...everyone waiting for it to change to modern graphics. It was such a stealthy quick jab to the gut that everyone's wind was knocked out. Theres no reaction to something like that...lol

Thread title seriously needs a change to be more specific. :(

It's as specific as it need to be.

It's really not misleading at all.

I LOL'd. Its true though.
Props to the mods for staying true to it so that its not just us that has to carry this terrible pain.

Maybe they were excited for what they were going to get, and didn't have. Instead of being bitter about what they couldn't have, and didn't get.

I was, and still am disappointed. But really, when you look at it soundly, we are getting a great game on PS4 with trophies, that doesn't currently exist. That is great.

It's like being offered a ton of silver, but saying that's shit because it's not a ton of gold. I doubt anyone in this thread takes that attitude in their lives.

Was trophies confirmed?
