Destiny locks non-DLC users out from Weekly Strikes when DLC content is in rotation

A more clear summary of the situation:

There's a thing called Strike Playlist in the game. It has different tiers for different level versions, but basically, it puts you into a queue to be matched to a random instanced dungeon.

Pre-expansion, the highest level of this was Vanguard Tiger, which scaled the content to level 24 and gives bonus engrams (unidentified items) on completion - this is in addition to what may drop during the mission itself.

With the expansion, a new playlist called Vanguard Roc was introduced, which matches content to level 26. This new playlist rewards bonus engrams, which are no longer rewarded from Vanguard Tiger.

So you'll still get engrams, but you just don't get the bonus engrams you used to get from Tiger, as that reward has been moved up a tier, to the tier that requires DLC to play. This part is kind of scummy.

Additionally, a lot of people are loudly miffed about new content being added to the Weekly Heroic and Nightfall events, which are both great ways to get gear without raiding, but what's actually happening is that players simply can't play content they didn't purchase. Realistically, it's pretty reasonable to think that new content would be added to a weekly rotation, even if you didn't purchase it yourself.

This deserves its own thread, courtesy of reddit:

So the first expansion pack just dropped for Destiny and as a result it rendered the most important end game activities useless for non DLC owners.
Activities that shipped with the game no less!

1.) Weekly/Nightfall Strike is now exclusive to DLC owners.
There's no alternative for non DLC owners, they are simply locked out of getting coins/exotic loot this way.
Granted it rotates weekly but that there is no alternative for non DLC owners is a big fuck up as you need those coins to get better gear.
It only gets worse once more DLC drops.

2.) Removed loot drops from strike playlist for non DLC owners
Pre DLC: Any difficulty dropped loot
Post DLC: Only DLC difficulty drops loot now

I'm usually not quick to bash devs for their actions but this is a new low.
The game shipped with little content as is and now they reduced the little content there is for regular customers even further.
They literally removed any incentive for non DLC players to play past the story missions.
But on the upside this is in line with every update Bungie released so far for Destiny: Making it harder to progress.

tldr: Bungie made leveling up even slower, now by locking out existing content

I like Destiny and all, and Deej will probably argue that they added free stuff as well to non-dlc owners, but this is unacceptable.

What is the solution? Multiple Weekly Strikes so you can capture those players who haven't upgraded? That. . . seems silly.

Destiny the joke of a game that keeps on giving the laughs. I fell deep for this game and it wasn't what I was expecting and it continues on the path to mediocrity that started with it's launch.

Removed loot altogether from the Strike playlist? WTF

Sounds like something someone would joke about when Destiny launched. Wow.

That's one way of turning a $69.99 product into a $99 product.

There is only one new strike being added to the weekly rotations, so next week it will be a strike everyone has again and non DLC guys will only miss out once every six weeks, right?

Why silly - other games have done this. If you don't hang have the expansion, you should remain on the launch cycle of strikes and nighfalls. Of course, that wouldn't push you towards buying the expansion...

(Similarity, playstation owners should have a separate strike rotation that includes the extra content but presumably that requires too much effort on Bungies part).

Whilst I love the basic game mechanics and the feel of shooting and moving, every single thing outside of that in this game is pure garbage. It's the worse implementation of an MMO I have ever seen - and I played Vanguard!

What's silly about that? Have for one for people with all the content. One for people still with just the base game.

Well, this isn't really surprising, business-wise. They wanted to create an online only multiplayer-centric title without a subscription fee and without micro-transactions. Gotta keep that funding somehow, so I guess "expansion DLC" is the new form of delayed subscription fees. Or pre-paid subscription fees for season pass holders! Lol.

Before I was like "Hey, Destiny's core gameplay is supposed to be good. Maybe I'll buy Destiny 2 when it comes out on PC and eventually gets cheap on Steam." Now I'm like "lol."

God forbid non-dlc owners actually get anything for free.

You know, I want to play Destiny one day, but I feel like whenever I get to it there will be no game left.

Being locked out of the nightfall/weekly heroic strike only applies if the strike is the new one right?

Yeah, a friend on mine just phoned me to tell me this thing, since I gift him Destiny Expansion Pass. Also, the expansion download is only 1 mb.

Few weeks ago there was a download patch of size ~2,3Gb.

Also they tweaked daily, took 28 level away and instead there is now 30 level with same prices as 28 had. So now there are 20, 26, 30 level dailys.

My armor is VoG raid gear fully. Now I can buy better gear from vendors. Buying 4 pcs from Vendor gets me to level 31. My VoG raid gear gets me to level 30. I do have expansion pass but the way this is made is awful.

What a flop this game became.
Hardly. I still see people talking about how much they love it and how much they play it(and how much they don't know why!), and it sold gangbusters. Its obviously still going strong after shrugging off all the criticism and hooking enough people.

The one thing I almost praised Destiny for was despite the hellish grind the game doesn't currently use it to push microtransactions. I guess they're going to use it to push DLC instead. Gross.

Gosh, I'm truly shocked. I would never have seen such a thing coming.

Shitty move, but entirely predictable. If you're not willing to be a consistent source of revenue, what use are you?!

I'd imagine they'd rather you and those people to upgrade instead of being content doing what they are currently doing.

But what do you do when more DLC drops? Have a weekly rotation for people with just the first DLC, people with just the second, and people with just the base game? That would get messy fast. It would be acceptable if they put all strikes in the Weekly rotation and if it happens to be a DLC strike then non-DLC owners can't play. For all we know that's what it is and this week just happens to be a week with a DLC strike.

What th-?! 1MB??

That's not unusual - most of the content/changes are likely in recent patches that everyone should have to ensure parity. It's a common way of doing it with online games. It's not a conspiracy of it all being on disk already (although it might be in this case, i don't know!).

I had a feeling they would do the forced-DLC thing.

But I thought they would at least TRY to do it in a more subtle way.

I might get the game once it gets into F2P territory, where it looks like it's heading anyway.

well its random, but yes

Strikes aren't random BTW - someone figured out the rota last week. It's a fixed rotation of strikes and modifiers that we cycle through. The vanilla launch cycle only had one solar burn strike for example (plus the strike with all burns active).
