2D or 3D Metroid

3d.

Prime was something else.
Exploring the world in 3d was far more immersive for me, and the soundtrack for Prime was pretty damn awesome.

Though in the end, I wouldn't say no to a 2d Metroid as well.

They were an interesting curiosity, but the Prime games aren't that fun to play. Even though the spacial positioning was fantastic for how close the FOV is, it's not that fun to jump around not seeing the platform your jumping to. The shooting was just ok, just something you had to do to progress. Nintendo needed a 'mature' first person game at the time, though.

FPS isn't that big of a deal anymore and consequently Nintendo doesn't have to have it's own take on it, so the Prime games are done, thankfully.

There are wrong opinions in this world. You have one of the worst, sorry to say.

Not fun? Da fuq

If we can't have both, i prefer 3D. Exploring the corners of a 3D environment with today's technology and visuals is more interesting than a 2D image, no matter how well drawn it is.

3 is kind of an awkward Metroid game (similar to Other M), and the Wiimote pointing was a chore due to arm fatigue.

2 is frustrating, I'll likely never go back to play it.

1 is good. The platforming is as solid as first person platforming can be with that FOV (first person platforming is a bad idea to begin with), but compared to the kind of flow that 2D Metroid provides, it's slow and boring. The shooting is just 'there', nothing really exciting about it, and it regularly just bogs the game down unlike the 2D games. It has nice music, graphics and atmosphere.
I disagree.

The wii mote was one of the best things of 3, great controls. Another reason why the trilogy is also great

2 had this creepy atmosphere, I loved it, and was really hard. My favorite of the series. And 1 was a masterpiece, it was a great first introduction to fps metroid, and it is beautiful till this day. They were all fun, beautiful and great games. No other games give me that sense of isolation, they capture that perfectly

I wasn't enamored of the Prime games either. I actually strongly prefer Metroid and Metroid II to any subsequent games in the series. Too much hand-holding in the 2D entries thereafter for what I wanted from the series, and the transition to 3D for the series made it feel grittier and more "real" than I look for in games. It has some interesting 3D mechanics but I think it became too complex for me in a 3D space. I like the simplicity of the first two games better.

Trust me, I also feel no fun playing the first Metroid Prime, the first hours were really cools when you discovers everything and collect power-up but when you starting to face a lot of Space Pirate, it becomes really boring since the shooting was a little bit bland and took way too long for exterminating some space pirates. And at the end of the game, you're always interrupted by space pirates especially since you must collect artefacts and wandering in the already visited zones. Bad game design man.

I loved Metroid Prime 3 more since the hyper mode was awesome and the boss better designed.

2D is better, it moves faster and feels tighter. 3D Metroid is alright but I don't like scanning at all.

That's not a problem with the game then. I found that Metroid Prime 1, less so 2, struck a good combination of complexity and simplicity. The maps were certainly linear enough to not get lost, until you got to the pirate base and water maps (some of those maps lost me due to the poor visual fidelity).

Both is the obvious answer, but in choosing one or the other I'd prefer a Prime-styled game. I think there is still room to grow there, they can't top that freshness that Prime 1 brought to the table, but they could make something that hits the highs of Prime 1 and 2 without the low points. Prime 3 could be drawn from as well but I much prefer the structure of the first two.

And I thought Prime 3's bosses were pretty bland in comparison to Prime 2. That was definitely the pinnacle of the trilogy's boss fights.

How is it bad game design? This makes no sense. You just didn't enjoy the type of enemy you faced, that doesn't make it bad game design. Did you even follow the story or lore at all? The pirates were on that planet for a reason, and they were your primary enemy, but they weren't the only things you fought. On top of that they became increasingly more dangerous. For a game that used only one analog stick, I thought the controls were perfectly fine.

If I had to choose one I'd go with a 3D metroid because so many 2D "Metroid style" games are on the market. In particular I'm looking forward to playing Axiom Verge on my Vita next year.

When I talk about bad game design, I'm talking about the artefacts quest. Same problem with the Triforce quest from Wind Waker. One cheap way to make the game longer.

See it this way. Super Metroid was pretty much the perfect 2D Metroid game. Its going to be too hard to top that.

Metroid Prime though, although a masterpiece in it's time, can still be improved as Retro will be able to do much more immersive, bigger, more complex and more detailed 3D environments with the newer hardware. Imagine the crateria of Super Metroid translated in a huge 3D landscape with tons of detail, unlimited draw distance, weather effects and the moody atmosphere/music.

Super Metroid is still the best Metroid game.

2D
It is but can you really trust anyone to make a game that good these days?

I don't really like Prime but Retro is a better developer now than they were in the Gamecube days. They will do a better job on a Prime sequel than whatever developer they get to make a 2D game.

I feel like whoever makes a new 2D Metroid will put way too much effort into the atmosphere and immersion part, and not nearly enough into the movement mechanics and level design.

That's the only problem with the game then. And many of those artifacts are found along the way in the game. So in the end, if you explored during your initial travels, you would only need a few more artifacts. So that's one issue I agree with. What else is the problem, then? If that's the only gripe you have, then it isn't sufficient enough to denounce the game, especially since it did SO many things amazingly for being the series' first 3D entry.

I agree with you. It's my own preference, not a problem with the games themselves, and I do understand the affection for the series. It's just not my jam.

Accusing Metroid Prime for "bad game design" is kind of an oxymoron because Metroid Prime is one of the best designed games ever made.

I absolutely loved the artifact hunting because i had a reason to revisit areas that contained sub-areas i couldn't previously go and use my new upgrades to open new areas. And the regenerating enemies served the purpose of making the power suit actually feel more powerful than ever with the upgrades, as you could kill those enemies faster and easier than before.

A New Super Metroid would be amazing, but I doubt Nintendo have the faith in their players to drop a character in the world with no guide and make them explore any more.

The only hope is that the inevitable guide is like the ones in recent Mario and Zelda games that show exactly what you have to do but are pretty much entirely optional.

I have so many good memories from the first Metroid Prime. The exploring, the music, the atmosphere are all so good. I didn't mind that later in the game you had to revisit the same areas a lot, and I often got lost meaning I had to take a huge stroll through places I had been several times. But it was fun to do so because I just really liked the world.

I am really pro 3D.

Super Metroid can't be topped so i don't care for another "decent" 2D Metroid game.

But i feel like the Prime series can be improved a lot with modern hardware. So i prefer a new Retro made, Prime game.

both, but if I had to chooe, 3D
metroid prime was such an amazing game

and if they did a 2d metroid next, it would probably be ugly and with a poor framerate like castlevania on 3DS, so please just make Metroid Prime WiiU next.

There's tons of 2D "Metroidvanias" of great quality these days. There aren't any 3D adventures on the Prime level of quality though.

3D please!

After Metroid and Super Metroid, I was super skeptical that it would translate to 3D, but Retro studios knocked it out of the park with Metroid Prime, one of my favorite games of all time. I'll say both are needed. I played the hell out of Metroid Fusion at the same time as Metroid Prime, so both are viable. I'd want a 2D sequel to Fusion, and maybe another 3D version that is more Prime style.

As much as i love 2D Metroids, i wish they would go for 3D Metroid where the undergound caves are as big as the new Zeldas overworld. Samus and Samus alone, starting on the surface making her way down.

Capturing this:

Please no more Power Ranger Bounty Hunters like in Prime 3.

People should stop referencing data that makes me feel uncomfortable because games get ported to platforms I don't like

Seriously some people say they love exploration and that that is was makes a Metroid game, but then they complain that they had to backtrack to get all artifacts in Metroid Prime. So then how the fuck do they explore? When entering a new room do they just spin once to look at everything asap and then move on?

3D Metroid.

I know people hate Other M for many reasons, but in the gameplay aspect, other M has an insanely good gameplay between 2D and 3D, so that I like that way to go

You missed out on two of the best Gamecube games.

Agreed. While I know it's personal preference and all, I pity those who didn't enjoy the Prime series. The first, especially, is that good, and the second, after subsequent plays, shines above even the first, in my opinion (took me years to feel this way).

I played all the Metroids to date except the first on Nes
and my wet dream would be a remaster of sort of SuperMetroid
with all the memory of the WiiU devoted to post processing effects: lighting/smoke/volumetric fog/ distortions/DOF
I'd like also some zoom-in and zoom-outs in different scale environments
And uncompressed music and Fx's
That would be neat
