Alright, just bought myself a WiiU and Smash. Now, I would need some starting tips because this is my first Smash. I only played it at friends' houses before, so pretty noob. Any good tips?

Also, what's the consensus on controller? Does the pro or tablet work well or does everyone recommend the Gamecube controller to get the best out of the controls? :)

I know this has probably been answered 12000 times already. If so, could someone point me in a general direction to start :)

GameCube controller, for sure.

Play someone here and get feedback. Everyone is friendly.

Just did All Star with Palutena and her congratulations image in the credits is hilariously suggestive. I'd post the image here but my Wii U can't connect to the internet at the moment.

GGs Cronoc.

Oh yeah, speaking of feedback, do you have any?
You do a lot of unsafe stuff. Whenever you see Bowser shield grab or Fortress you, it is because you made a mistake. Usually, it isn't even the result of smart decisions on my end, just overeager ones on yours. You have to treat Bowser like it is Street Fighter and beat him with pokes and footies. Going all on on him usually just results in getting hit, since he has great defensive techniques. Every time you see me shield grab or Fortress you, take note of it and rethink what you did leading up to that moment.

Sure thing. Set up a room. Casuals, right?

Well, damn. Thanks for the games, ouch though. I suppose I'll take the opportunity to vent a bit. Today has been a terrible day for me in smash all around. I've been SDing waay too often. You probably noticed I very rarely edge guard at all, cause I'm too afraid of dying. And when I do, I usually kill myself. I generally have problems around the ledge. Getting back to the ledge with Ike and Fox after getting hit off, if a buffered fair comes out of either of them after I'm dropping off stage the chances of recovering become slim.

You're way too good for me. As someone that likes to play Bowser, it was encouraging to see a Bowser that I couldn't beat, that's a first compared to the typical for glory people. Palutena also, who I consider a completely worthless character... The single hit throw combo mystified me. I only recently learned about DI'ing out of things (in more than an instinctual way), but I had a hard time getting out of pretty much all your combos. People like to claim there are very few combos in Smash 4, I guess that must be against a perfect DI'ing opponent or something. Though every battle I play has so many moments of "how is this possible." Like trying to punish something only to meet a raised shield. Or trying to time a counter properly. Like those times when I'd just drop straight down to you only to get hit again over and over - each time I was going wtf as I feel offline I would have countered you properly.

Oh, also playing this game almost exclusively in for glory 1v1s has ruined me for stages with platforms, I really didn't do well on those.

I'm thinking about buying one of these, cause the triggers on the gamecube controller are really bugging me. Given that they activate about halfway down, my reflexes that were used to Brawl (click in the trigger to shield) screw up teching for me way too often. All in all I have a ton of shit to fix, some of which would be better with local play, some with digital triggers, and a bunch more practice. Anyway, thanks for the games, and hopefully no one in my bracket is this good.

Oh, I think the rules for ranbats need to be amended somehow, cause every map I chose is the one we played, your map choices never seemed to matter...

I finally started playing the Wii U Version and Mind = Blown. It's so much better compared to the 3DS that it feels like I'm playing Smash 5. Thanks Sakurai.

Is that Hori pad wired? I share your frustrations with the shoulder buttons. I just hate batteries even more, haha.

I think we got a share of stages chosen. I am convinced that the game is more likely to let the loser pick, and I think that is fair for the ranbats.

Palutena is 100% guaranteed to get a hit after her down throw if she judges the DI properly. I think she is a solid character, but I need to work a lot on fast falling her fairs consistently before she is good in my hands. I am glad I was able to give you renewed confidence in her potential. I think everyone in this game is good, even if some are better than others. I have played folks that are great with every character now and been frustrated.

Ike's counter is really slow. You need to predict the attack fair ahead of time. Marty and Lucario have very fast counters in comparison. Palutena seems to be the slowest.

When chasing off the ledge, don't use your jump. Just walk off the side. Only jump when you are ready to get back to the ledge. At least, that is the way to do it with Marth. IMO, it is better to die a lot practicing against someone here than it is to be ineffective. I know I died a lot when I started practicing it at first.

Is it normal for my lvl. 50 amiibo to be kicking my ass so much? The guy's (Mario) a magician at dodging and baiting me with projectiles

Start with a character you want to dedicate to playing. Commands for every character are more or less the same but each does have different effects so focusing on one character first can give you familiarity, especially with damage and knockback, range and reach, timing and rhythm, lags and recoveries.

Fighting Smash 1vs1 against a CPU can really help with familiarity. If you can beat a lvl.9 CPU consistently without any help from items, then you have mastered the basics. From there, you can learn advanced techniques from video tutorials online and fighting somebody online, as real human opponents can do nifty tricks that you can pick up and learn.

As for controllers, Gamecube one is pretty much the optimized one for Smash, but I've been using the Pro and no problems for me.

The Hori basically counts as a classic controller, so it plugs into the wiimote. No rumble because of that. So it's wired... to a wireless controller.

Oh yeah, I forgot that the loser gets to pick the stage. Makes sense why all the stages were my picks then...

Palutena just has so many punishable attacks... not that I'm in any position to punish them. I've been playing since Smash 64 and I've never whiffed so much in a Smash game. I still haven't adapted at all to the lack of momentum the characters have now. The days of the sliding up smash are mostly over :/

I know Ike's comes out a little slower... I think everything I do needs to come out a little before I'm throwing it, my timing is just off it seems.

I've been considering turning the "tap to jump" off, cause I seem to use my second jump accidentally all the time. That's what kills most of my recoveries. Just so hard to jump with only buttons when I have so many years of Smash muscle memory around jumping that way. For whatever reason in Smash 4 I just feel out of control of my character, I'm mashing more than I ever did in previous ones. Still playing like there isn't landing lag on everything too :/

Pro and gamepad work fine, but GC is the best.

I think this thread is full of explanations and tips: http://www.neogaf.com/forum/showthread.php?t=951838. There are also some big posts with tips way back in this thread. I'm sure you can dig them out with thread search.

Definitely turn tap to jump off. I did it for the first time in this game, and while I SDed many many times, it made me better overall.

Palutena also has the fastest recovering fair in the game, an invincible dash attack, and excellent recovery. Her jab is pretty safe as well. Her tilts and smashes are all very punishable, so you just have to use them sparingly. Or be a fool like me and ftilt a log out of habit from maiming Bowser. :p

That sucks that the Hori is wireless.

GGs Puruzi. You are extremely patient, lol. Definitely frustrating at times trying to hit you. You probably get opponents to do a lot of stupid things.
This late reply, but yeah, I don't like to rush in because it usually gets me killed. That Ness you had was too good, def the best I've ever seen.

any neat trick to unlock customization gear (special moves and eq) in the Wii U version?

I guess I could just continue getting the gear and moves on the 3DS (home-button trick in classic mode) and move the customized characters over?

Wow holy crap I just played a few For Glory matches with Olimar against this guy using Robin.

I just started using Olimar so I still suck, I think I lost 3 matches before winning once, then I lost the last one. Too tired to continue lol.

Wifi is shit at my place. My WiiU can't find it and I haven't recieved my lan adapter yet.
Ah, well Classic can offer up a good challenge and collecting trophies is still a lot of fun. There's a lot to do so I'm sure you'll find something in between all the single player modes.

It appears that I have found all the randomly-dropped CDs. All I have left are the last five CD challenges (Master Core, both Master Fortress themes, Full Steam Ahead, and Reshiram/Zekrom).

For, any tips for the 12 Crazy Orders With Greninja Challenge? Any particular customizations?

Quick Hitter + HR Bat equip + some way to recover? Always go for Horde/Giant/Team matches, in that order.

I said wow

I dunno what it's called in English, but the First Hit Invincibility badge is a great way to round out the set. Also, I personally found that Metal opponents were the easiest because they barely move and they're slow enough that you can easily get the drop on them once you're invincible. The same strategy worked wonders for the Mario challenge as well!

12 turns? Easy. No customs needed. Pick the levels where you and one or two allies fight one big enemy, and just smash them off the side. Most can be done in < 15 seconds and with 0% damage taken. It does depend on the recovery moves of the giant but it's usually easy. Also the 3v3 battles are easier than FFA's. When fighting the hand, I found the easiest thing to do with Greninja was to jump into the air and do his down+a. The hands mostly just attack the ground, while you're just bouncing on the hand.

Smash is the GOTY as far as kids are concerned. I have all Nintendo Wii U games released since launch, and never had I seen my girls, nephews and friends from their age enjoy a game this much :)

Thanks for the answers! I'll try to grab myself a Gamecube controller and pick myself a fighter to get acquainted with! Then it'll be time to try my skills against humans :p

Much appreciated!

be aware that it might be a bit of a problem as of now getting a hold of the gamecube controller adapter, unless you're willing to spend $70 on ebay

I actually tried it without customs. I think I got to 8 or 10 rounds before dying.

any tips on using Palutena? I thought she'd be interesting ever since she was announced by I've tried using her and am disappointed every time. Such bland special moves. A teleport up+b that does no damage, a counter, a reflect and a ranged attack that is mediocre and easily punished.

Want to play? Palutena is my secondary, so I can give you an idea of how to use her. Just don't mirror match me. :p
