I am addicted to Spelunky!

The music is super bad, IMO. But the game is still great, lots of fun with it so far. One of the best indies I've played so far.

The music is one of the reasons I fell in love with the game it's charming complements the art nicely.

Did you find the music to happy or to loopy in what direction would you have like the music to go or give examples of games you thought had it all.

the music's ok, nowhere near my favourite soundtrack, but it's not jarring or anything. I quite like the jungle and ice levels, especially the saxophone in the king yeti levels. the worm is pretty cool too.

The music is awesome. Each track is a minute long so you can tell exactly when the ghost is coming without checking the time. And it's so good.

Just beat Hell on the Xbox 360 so I've got four achievements to go.

Co-op, which apparently is pretty basic with a second controller.
$500k, which should be easy enough with some ghosting.
Complete the journal, which I'm basically almost there with.

LOW SCORER. Arse.

Quite pleased I beat Hell, though, it's a bit harder on Xbox due to the HUD. For some reason also, all the times I've got to Yama on PSN the level hasn't spawned with the spike balls, whereas the one time I reached it on 360 they were there, which added a small amount of difficulty to proceedings.

I've got all the trophies, if I get all the Xbox achievements do I then go back to the Steam version? Hmm...

started playing Spelunky

Man, I am so horrible at it XD

I will improve because I cant stop playing it. The controls, the art, the music, the geometry. Amazing

Any advice for completing the final goal for the 3rd tunnel with only single player? I imagine co-op would be much easier but I don't have anyone to help me.

Do you mean bringing the key to the tunnel man?

All I can say is that you can use the key as a weapon to toss at enemies, plus you can drop it, do something else, then pick it back up when you're ready.

Just try to be extremely deliberate and you'll eventually get it.

A cape/gloves combo or jetpack would probably make your life a bit easier, especially in the caves.

Be careful where you place the key in the caves as it could slip off the icy surfaces into the abyss.

Thanks. Yeah I place it down when I need to, but have still yet to make it. Gotten as far as 2-3. I think if I can just get through the jungle I'll have a good shot. I make it through the ice caves more consistently than the jungle.

cape or jetpack will enable you to get through the ice caves really really easily, especially if you have a compass. use the first few levels to build up some money and buy as many bombs as possible. bombs + cape/jetpack + compass and just bomb your way through the jungle and fly/hover your way through the ice caves. that way you'll never have to put down the key.

the other option is to start at the jungle and build up enough experience that you're good enough to get through it easily with the key. i found that by starting at the jungle and running through there for a bunch of runs will get you accustomed to the enemies and various issues you can run into. same with the ice caves, but i think the jungle has a steeper learning curve.

I paid good money for this Dynex!
Quick question: I remember reading on the Playstation blog that the PS4 version of Spelunky had some spruced up textures or something along those lines... any truth to that? Or is there any other reason I should be playing the PS4 version of the game?

The PS4 controller is perfect for Spelunky, which is a bigger reason than any other.

I haven't noticed anything better (graphically) with the PS4 version, besides being 1080p.

I finally started playing Spelunky for the first time on Steam, and I'm assuming that version is "Spelunky HD" when referencing wikis.

I thought it was going to be a bit too frustrating with the complete restarts and easy deaths, but the tunnel system (I just finished the first one) means I may actually get through at least the main worlds some day, instead of giving up forever at the start of the second world. :p

The music is a little bit reptitive to me, but it was mostly okay once I turned the volume way down. It's neat that there are hidden secrets. Reminds me of Nethack and that game's crazy stuff like Fort Knox.

Why does my all time daily score (average of top 10 daily scores) always show my latest daily score divided by 10? I'm on PS4, does anyone else have this issue or does anyone know what's up with this?

I think the leaderboards may be a bit broken.

I screwed up todays daily and stupidly died in the mines but when it got to the leaderboard afterwards it said I got to 5-4 with a big pile of money.

Was that your score yesterday by any chance? All my scores seem to be one day behind for some reason.

finally beat the game from the start without shortcuts. now i'm going to go for some hell runs and try to beat it that way. any beginner advice for that?

It's basically the same thing, except you MUST get to the blackmarket to pick up the ankh. And it costs 50k gold.

So either you use up precious ropes and bombs ghosting the mines or ...

You learn to kill shopkeeps. Shops usually will spawn on 1-2, so you can get your first kill that way. Murder him and take his shotgun, kill everything standing in your way.

The best setup to have is to have 2~3 bombs with milk and 1 rope going into the black market (to get rid of shopkeeps in the first level). Murder everyone level by level, take the ankh by force, and try not to die until the moai head.

Reminder that you can't bring a weapon through the moai head unless you are cursed with the ball and chain, which requires you to destroy 2 kali altars, and almost always require you to have a cape or a jetpack in order to not die. An alternative is to keep a helper or an unlockable character alive, give him the weapon, then put him someplace he can't get out of (pretty hard to do).

Further reminder that if you want to get the kris knife, you must go into the worm at 3-1, then into the mother ship at 4-4, then die at the moai head after the mothership. This means you go into the temple with no weapon, unless you ball and chain (or keep a helper alive).

If you forgo the kris knife (usually because you don't have the kapala), you can die at the moai head level at 3-2 or 3-3, then go through the mothership and bring the plasma cannon to the temple.

No matter which route you take, you must kill anubis at 4-1, and bring the scepter with you into 4-2. The scepter will be used to unlock the door to the temple of gold. One way to keep a weapon is to kill most enemies, then kill the shopkeep using the scepter (always a risk) or a bomb, then use the scepter to unlock the door and bring in the shotgun.

Or you keep a helper alive and let him hold plasma cannon. huehuehue

Black market is so easy to rob there's almost no reason not to, the power spike you get from collecting everything in the black market is staggering.

If you're playing it safe, just play the game straight until the bm, buying everything you can along the way and then rob the bm once you get to it unless you find a jetpack in an earlier shop.

Well, there's the slight issue of having shopkeepers going mental at every exit in the Temple and Hell, that's a pretty good reason!

I've nothing against robbing the black market if you can't afford everything you need, but I'd always try and pay your way if you can, because it'll make the rest of the game much less stressful.

i'm pretty awful at trying to kill shop keepers. i've gotten the ankh before (bought it), but didn't get any further than that. seems like you absolutely need a gun to deal with hell?

If you want to go through the game without killing a shopkeep, have 50k for ankh, 30k for jetpack possibility, and some more for bombs.

The gun is for the temple (mostly). The best weapon you can have in hell is actually the camera, which 1 hit kills bats, vampires, drakula, the stupid red demon things with the magma pots, and succubi.

Also shopkeeps die most of the time in the temple due to tiki traps. Its rare to find a live shopkeeper in hell since there are so many things trying to kill you.

There's a few methods to easily take one out to get started.

1) If a shop has a shotgun, a machete, a freeze ray or even a boomerang, you're set on killing him without any health loss.

2) A lot of people have mastered the jump-whip technique where you jump from the second to last item and whip at the same time so you land on his head to knock him out, pick him up and toss him to keep him asleep, run and get his gun and kill him before he wakes up.

3) I however haven't been able to master that so I just stand in front of him and whip him. You lose one health point though. So make sure you can spare it. Then you run and get his gun, turn around and shoot him thrice.

Usually I prefer to do the first method, but if there's a jetpack or bomb cache and no weapons I might to the third method depending on my mood.

Shotgun is really handy for the final battle with Yama. Unless you have a lot of bombs (You'll get 24 right away anyway providing you have something to take out Ox Face and Horse Head), sticky paste and a baseball mitt. If you don't have one of those three, the shotgun will be your best bet. Alternatively you'll have to use some creative aiming. And without paste it'd be even harder and you'll be pretty much screwed. Hopefully you should at least have paste by then. Just kill one big spider and you're set.

God I love this game, pretty much the only roguelike I have high esteem for.
Gives you full control and pretty much follows true video game formula of actually learning the game.
Then it tests you, it tests you hard and each mistake you make can make you lose that precious control and it never felt so good,
I mean horrific
.
Tests are brutal but fair and all is laid up to your knowledge and experience to tough it out and actually learn it and not pray to the gods of random.

Dunkey just popped in this vid today, surprisingly sums up Spelunky first encounter super well.

After 101 hours of the Steam version and maybe 30 of the Xbox version, I finally got Speedlunky. I didn't do a ton of trying on this one but it is a very enjoyable achievement.

Still have to get Low Scorer and the coop achievements.

I still don't have Speedlunky or No Gold. But Coop was easy.
Just set up a second player as the keyboard and play with one person all the way to the end (Let the other person die) and if you're lucky, get to Olmec with him still alive and hide him somewhere until you finish the battle.
Thanks to PsychadelicEyeball for that trick. Worked like a charm.

While checking up on one of the best Spelunky runners via Twitch I noticed that there's now a level editor included as part of the Frozlunky mod!

All you have to do is download the thing here: http://sashavol.com/frozlunky/

It's really easy to use and created levels can be shared conveniently because they're just xml files. Here's my first attempt: http://s000.tinyupload.com/index.php?file_id=06514390045377856414

If that file host is off limits or something, I'll delete it. Anyway, it's not meant to be particularly creative or a puzzle. It's just what the filename suggests, a couple of moves strung together that should be a part of an experienced spelunker's arsenal. Maybe if there's enough of an interest we can get a small library of these exclusive to GAF.

I got ate by a flytrap when I flew too close to it and the bastard stripped me of my jetpack. Wasted my ankh but of course I went back and got it. Never had that happen to me before, is that normal?

Love the daily challenge.

Sadly I can often get to the
black market
in the jungle stage and that usually where things go badly. I frequently end up not having the
jet pack
or enough money for the
ankh
then end up killing shopkeepers for them which 8/10 leads to my own destruction XD

I love getting the
goblet from Kali
; it makes fighting enemies you can avoid interesting and thrilling.

Ridiculous game

Fuck this game

LOLOL, have probably done several hundred runs. Something like that happened to me only once, jungle level also I think.

I got the speedlunky achievement yesteday. Really satisfied on how quick it took me to beat that achievement compared to the hours it took me to even reach the ice caves.

This is the only rougelike that doesn't frustrate me with every death. I guess this game has that "harsh but fair" balance that games like FTL and BoI failed IMO.
