SEGA 3D Classics finally set to release in NA/EU beginning November 28

Hey friends! Just a friendly reminder that the SEGA 3D Classic games are, to the best of my knowledge, eligible for the GAF Games of the Year 2013 thread. 3D Super Hang-On ended up making my list, and I figured you all might want to show M2 some love as well, since the 3D Classics don't seem to be making a big splash in most people's year-end lists :p

I'm sure Shinobi would be on the list too from everything I've read about it, but alas, my backlog is at critical mass right now so I'll have to wait to download the rest of these games until the next gaming drought hits.

I want to add 3D Shinobi, 3D Sonic and 3D HangOn but my list is already full, OK 2 days to get this done, maybe I can throw them in there somehow...

When will they do 3D Classics ports of more arcade games like Outrunners, Golden Axe: Revenge of Death Adder or even Crazy Taxi?

They have a goldmine of unported arcade titles that they're sitting on!

I'd be excited for the 32X versions of Space Harrier and After Burner done up in 3D. The Genesis versions were kinda crappy.

Aren't the arcade versions better than 32X ones?

Yeah, Afterburner on 32X was only 30fps as opposed to arcade 60.

You SURE about that? I no longer have it, but I could swear I remember arcade perfection.. hmm..

Well, I for one, am absolutely positive about that.

I too owned a Sega 32X with After Burner (it said "Complete' on the title screen but this was indeed a port of After Burner II) which was released in 1994.

While the 32X port was certainly FAR beyond the barren-looking MD/Genesis version of 1990, having basically all of the graphic detail of the arcade, it ran at half the framerate, 30fps instead of the arcade's 60.
Was easy to tell that while the 32X port looked like the arcade game, it did not run or play nearly as smoothly as the coin-op arcade machine did.

The Sega Ages version of After Burner II for Saturn released in 1996 in Japan (1997 for NA / EU, as part of the Sega Ages 3-in-1 compilation with Space Harrier and OutRun published by Working Designs) was the first home version to match the arcade, with a full 60fps.

I owned the stand-alone Japanese Saturn version as well as the NA compilation.

So it took about a decade to get what was basically arcade perfection, from 1987 ------> 1996/1997.

Rutubo games developed both the 1994 32X and 1996 Saturn ports of After Burner II. So it was not a case of different developers, it was hardware. The Saturn simply had the power to reproduce the speed / framerate of the X Board arcade hardware. The 32X did not.

After Burner II in Shenmue II on Dreamcast, and Xbox, was also a full 60fps.

Was quite surprised when I saw this a short while back. 3D Galaxy Force II is on my list, I just have to get around to post it.

I've been thinking about voting in that thread for the sole reason of including these games, but I can't be bothered... mainly because I have terrible memory and I can't remember which other games I played last year.

You don't have to do a full list of ten! You can just post however many of the 3D Classic games that you enjoyed and leave it at that :D

I'd say at this point my top 3 games in this first batch (hopefully not the last to make it West) of Sega 3D Classics are:

Space Harrier: The pseudo 3D sprite-scaling effect in this and Galaxy Force II both look great in stereoscopic 3D, but I think Space Harrier is just a little more fun than Galaxy Force II. The cabinet recreation experience is great – you can hear the fire button being pressed even when using auto-fire and the cabinet moves around with a satisfying amount of noise.

Super Hang-On: Best cabinet recreation experience. With the 3D turned off, and the responsive and effective gyro controls turned on, this is a very unique experience on 3DS. From the interviews with Sega and M2:

SEGA’s arcade racing sims would be released in pairs, where one arcade machine moves on its own, and players move the other one. Examples of the former would be Space Harrier, Outrun, Afterburner, and examples of the latter are Hang-on, Enduro Racer, and Super Hang-on.

So I decided that if we were going to release something after Space Harrier, it should be a game where you move the machine with your body, so in that respect the release order makes sense.

So while I hope M2 makes 3D Outrun, I'm very glad to experience Super Hang-On on 3DS because the gyro controls make it such a perfect fit for the handheld.

Shinobi III: Sega's 16 bit parallax scrolling is unbelievably beautiful and impressive here! And it's Shinobi III!

I haven't played 3D Altered Beast, Ecco, or Streets of Rage yet.

They have been sitting on so many for a LONG time. I am thankful for what we have gotten, but it seems we keep getting the same ones and the ones that were ignored, keep getting ignored.
Hopefully that will change.

It's a travesty Golden Axe The Revenge Of Death Adder was never brought home in any from on any platform, even in Japan.

I gotta say the difficulty spike in the last level of Shinobi is insane... Yeah I'm sure I've never beat this game before, and if it weren't for the ability to save and load anywhere I wouldn't beat it now.

How did people beat this back in the day? Did it have a save feature or unlimited continues? Or did everyone use a cheat code?

I paid good money for this Dynex!

Yeeaaahh, the game ain't messing around by the time you get to the last level.

I remember strugling with it when I first played it, but I pretty much breezed through it this time around.

I guess, if nothing else you can take solace in the fact that the last level will put hair on your chest.

Looking for a little length. .

Gross.

Anyway, Shinobi III is easily the better choice as far as I'm concerned. Really good use of 3D (though GF2 is probably better in that regard), and it's a fantastic action game that's pretty much the perfect length.

Guys, halp.

Shinobi or GF2? I can now only choose one.

Which is better? Looking for a little length. .

They're two very very different games. I don't know how you expect one to recommend one over the other without any context behind the selection process ("length" is not enough).

With that said, I enjoyed and played Shinobi more so far. But GF2 gave me a stronger Wow factor, and it would be the game I show off to other people to sell them on the concept of 3D remakes. The 3D in the game inarguably makes the game better, while in Shinobi it's just cosmetic (but still very pretty).

Did you play either of them previously?

Played none of them before.

I heard Shinobi rocks, but GF2 LOOKS to be more "wow!".

I have recently been getting into these. These are probably the most hype things on the system, fairly feature rich M2 perfect ports with probably the best use of the 3D for the system. These will probably end up being some of my most played games on the handheld (especially the arcade ports).

If the second set doesn't come to America I will be seriously pissed, they sound incredible.

This bump is NOT a 3D Outrun release date! For shame.
Sorry for doing the same, even when I myself thought the release date was announced when I opened the thread. At the same time, these fantastic M2 ports do need every bit of attention we can give them!

I'm thinking it might be a problem of the source code not having been saved properly for some of these games at least (Outrunners and Revenge of Death Adder in particular).

I could be wrong, but why else wouldn't Sega at this point throw its fans a bone and create ports for such games? Of course there are costs involved, but since they would be released as parts of a series that already has the attention of the correct crowd of people (since most people who will buy these games will be old school Sega fans I'd imagine - save perhaps for the Sonic one) why not take the jump here like they did with Galaxy Force? Except when they can't for some reason due to missing source code that is.

And not to derail and depress us even further, but what would some other classic Sega games be that we would like Sega to release on 3DS this way? Let's daydream for a bit shall we?

Apart from Turbo Outrun, which I've mentioned before, I've always remained interesed in the arcade version of Moonwalker myself (which seems very unlikely to ever be ported). As for later games, a re-release of some of the Panzer Dragoon games in 3D would also be appreciated as I keep missing out on that series for some reason. Outrun 2, Harley Davidson, Hummer, Ollie King and Sega Race TV would also be cool, though they seem even less likely. Sigh, I just miss the energetic, colourful and over-the-top style of Sega's output in those days I guess.

Edit: Some other arcade games I just thought of: AB Cop (suitable since it uses sprite scaling as well), Thunder Blade (arcade version, sprite scaling again), Shinobi 1 and Shadow Dancer (and Revenge of Shinobi on Genesis to complete the set), Dynamite Dux (for shits and giggles), ESWAT, Alien Storm (the first person shooting stages would look nice especially), DD Crew (if for the intro theme alone!). All pipe dreams of course, but still.

I got Space Harrier for the 3DS and it felt wrong. The control was sloppy and made playing it more frustrating than it should.

Really? I think this is the first time I heard this complaint to be honest.

Can anyone here confirm sloppy/loose controls in Space Harrier (haven't played that one myself)?

Seriously, I was hoping for an US confirmation of Outrun &/or Fantasy Zone. Back to waiting....

I would buy 3D Sonic 2 just to support a 3D Sonic 3 & Knuckles (S3D&K?). Those bonus stages would look rather nice in 3D, I bet.

Well, it's not a very *good* confirmation, but I can confirm that I didn't find the game any harder to control than any of the other ports I've played before.

This does however come with the very important caveat that I suck at Space Harrier, so my perception might be inaccurate.

If it goes like the first time, the second batch will spread out all over this year in Japan, then we will wait another full year for localisation and ratings.

December 2015, that's my bet.

It somehow took SEGA well over a year to announce the first lot for America/Europe, and that was months after they'd already been classified for release by PEGI/OFLC/ESRB etc.

Basically, it's going to be an extremely long wait for the second lot, if SEGA even bothers at all. :(

That would be unbearable... I want to see Outrun in 3D so bad.

They're not expensive compared to Backbone's reprehensible port jobs that SEGA used for much of the past generation or so. And the amount of extras and QoL options/improvements you get in each M2 release trumps anything Nintendo/Arika have done for their 3D Classics. You're not expected to beat arcade games once and never touch 'em again, that's just not how they're designed in the first place.

Balb

Why are these so expensive? They should 3 euros, at most :/

Not sure if you're being sarcastic but they're extremely accurate and lovingly made with lots of extra features. It should be the industry standard but isn't because people settle for crappy emulation if the game is cheap.
